Tax Preparation Fees: Who Can Deduct Them on a Federal Return?

Personal federal tax preparation fees generally are not deductible, but sole proprietors and statutory employees may deduct the supported business portion on Schedule C.

For U.S. federal taxes, personal tax preparation fees—including tax software and e-filing charges—are not deductible as miscellaneous itemized deductions under current IRS guidance. A sole proprietor or statutory employee may deduct the portion of preparation costs attributable to the business on Schedule C. The key is what the service covers, not whether the bill came from an accountant or tax software.

Who can deduct tax preparation fees?

A sole proprietor or statutory employee may deduct the cost of preparing the part of the return that relates to the business. The IRS states in 2025 Publication 334: “You can deduct on Schedule C (Form 1040) the cost of preparing that part of your tax return relating to your business as a sole proprietor or statutory employee.”

The IRS also says to include fees for business-related tax advice and for preparing tax forms related to the business in its 2025 Schedule C instructions. These are business expenses reported on Schedule C, not personal itemized deductions.

Which fees are personal and not deductible?

For an individual’s personal federal return, tax preparation fees are not deductible as miscellaneous itemized deductions under IRS Publication 529. The IRS includes tax preparation software, tax publications, and electronic filing fees in this rule. Paying for software or e-filing does not make the personal cost deductible.

The rule applies to the personal portion of a combined return-preparation bill as well. Being self-employed does not make the entire cost of preparing a personal return a business expense.

How to handle a bill covering both personal and business work

Only the portion attributable to the business is potentially deductible on Schedule C. If a preparer charges one fee for both personal and business work, keep an invoice, fee breakdown, or other reasonable records that support the amount assigned to the business. The IRS identifies the business-related portion but does not prescribe one universal allocation formula for every billing arrangement.

  • Report only the supported business portion on Schedule C; do not claim the personal remainder as a Schedule A deduction.

Schedule C is different from Schedule A

Schedule C reports qualifying business expenses. Schedule A is used for itemized deductions. The 2025 Schedule A instructions tell filers not to include expenses already deducted elsewhere, including on Schedule C. A business-related preparation fee does not become a personal itemized deduction simply because it concerns the same Form 1040.

What about a state return or tax years beginning in 2026?

Tax-year timing also matters. Public Law 115-97 suspended miscellaneous itemized deductions for taxable years beginning after December 31, 2017, and before January 1, 2026. Publication 529 says personal tax preparation fees can no longer be deducted, but the cited materials do not conclusively establish the statutory treatment for tax years beginning in 2026 or later. Do not assume the prior suspension window settles that later treatment; verify current law and IRS guidance for the tax year at issue.

The IRS says qualifying taxpayers may use the 2025 Schedule 1-A to claim four new deductions—for tips, overtime, car loan interest, and seniors—whether they itemize or take the standard deduction. The IRS’s Schedule 1-A guidance does not identify a deduction for personal tax preparation fees.
