Multiple current and former Target employees told BleepingComputer that a sample of leaked source code and documentation matched real internal systems. That corroborates the sample—not the threat actor’s claim that the complete archive contains about 860GB. BleepingComputer said it examined 14MB across five partial repositories.
What Target employees reportedly recognized
After hackers advertised Target source code and published an apparent repository sample on Gitea, people with direct knowledge of the company’s internal infrastructure contacted BleepingComputer. Multiple current and former employees said the sample reflected real Target systems.

The reported corroborating details included recognizable platform names and project codenames, references to internal cloud and on-premises deployment systems, Hadoop datasets, and a customized CI/CD stack based on Vela and JFrog Artifactory. A former employee recognized “BigRED” and “TAP [Provisioning]” as platforms used for application deployment and orchestration. Employees also recognized proprietary codenames and taxonomy identifiers called “blossom IDs.”
These are employee identifications reported by BleepingComputer, not the results of an independent forensic audit of every file. The account supports the conclusion that the sample was authentic; it does not establish that every item in the advertised archive was genuine or examined. BleepingComputer’s January 13, 2026 report describes the employee contacts and the sample.

How much data was examined—and how much was claimed?
| Figure | What it refers to | Attribution and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 14MB across five partial repositories | The sample BleepingComputer said it reviewed | BleepingComputer, January 2026; this is the examined sample, not the full advertised archive. Source |
| About 860GB | The alleged size of the full dataset | A threat-actor claim reported by BleepingComputer; the report did not independently verify the figure or authenticate the complete archive. Source |
The distinction matters: employee confirmation applies to the sample that people recognized. It should not be restated as proof that Target lost 860GB of verified source code.
What changed about access to Target’s code server?
A current employee who requested anonymity shared a screenshot of an internal company-wide Slack message. According to BleepingComputer, a senior product manager said that, effective January 9, 2026, access to git.target.com—Target’s on-premises GitHub Enterprise Server—would require a Target-managed network, either on site or through the company’s VPN. The message described the change as accelerated and said it aligned with how the company was handling access to GitHub.com.

BleepingComputer reported that the server had been accessible over the web until the prior week and then became unreachable from the public internet, with access limited to Target’s internal network or corporate VPN. This is a reported restriction on a company development environment, not advice or a need for consumers to use a VPN. The report includes the employee-shared message and access change.
Was an infostealer responsible for the leak?
That was not established in the January 13 report. Hudson Rock CTO and co-founder Alon Gal told BleepingComputer that his team had identified a Target employee workstation infected with infostealer malware in late September 2025. Gal said the workstation had access to internal services including IAM, Confluence, wiki, and Jira.

Gal described the case as unusual among infections his team had observed, saying that “almost none had IAM credentials and none had wiki access, except for one other case.” The report explicitly said there was no confirmation that this infection was connected to the source code advertised for sale. It is therefore a possible lead, not evidence that the malware caused the leak, that credentials were used to take repositories, or that the threat actor obtained the claimed archive. BleepingComputer’s account attributes the infostealer information to Gal.

BleepingComputer said it shared repository links and Hudson Rock’s intelligence findings with Target. As of the report’s January 13, 2026 publication, Target had not answered follow-up questions or said whether it was investigating a breach or possible insider involvement. That is a time-bounded account of the company’s response; it does not establish Target’s current position or whether the incident was later resolved.

Target’s vulnerability disclosure policy is general guidance for researchers, not confirmation about this source-code incident. The policy says researchers can submit potential vulnerabilities for review, requires written permission before public disclosure of potential or confirmed vulnerability details, and tells researchers not to expose or exfiltrate information believed to contain Target intellectual property or sensitive data.
