In the days before the Nintendo Switch 2 launch on June 5, 2025, customers reported that Target and Walmart had canceled some preorders. The reports did not establish how many orders were canceled or a confirmed cause. Target separately announced limited launch-day in-store stock with a queue and ticket process; its online sales were scheduled for June 6. The documented plan was managed lines for limited inventory—not an official call to “mob” stores.

What was reported about the canceled orders?

Gizmodo reported on June 3 that customers said Target and Walmart had canceled Switch 2 preorders. One Walmart customer said an initial email cited a card issue, while support reportedly referred to a large number of orders. A Target cancellation had also been reported. These were customer accounts, not a confirmed retailer-wide explanation. Gizmodo’s June 3 report covered the accounts.

Kotaku had also described customer cancellation reports on June 2. It discussed overselling, supply constraints, tariff-related delays and payment processing as possible explanations, not established causes. Neither report provided a verified total of canceled orders, so claims about the scale should be treated as unspecified. Kotaku’s coverage likewise did not establish a definitive cause.

What did Target and Walmart plan for launch day?

Target Stores on June 5, 2025; Target.com and its app on June 6 Limited store stock; shoppers were to queue and receive tickets. A one-per-item-per-guest purchase limit applied. Online sales were while supplies lasted. Target’s May 29 announcement. Target Corporate

Target said its April 24 preorder inventory sold out in less than two hours. That figure describes how quickly preorders sold, not how many cancellations followed. The launch prices reported by Axios were $449.99 for the base console and $499.99 for the console bundled with Mario Kart World; those are June 2025 launch prices, not current price or availability information.

Why “mob stores” overstates the plan

Target’s published instructions called for a queue and ticket allocation, with limited units and a purchase cap. The Associated Press reported shoppers lining up at stores on launch day and summarized the earlier preorder difficulties. Together, those accounts describe lines for scarce stock, not a retailer-endorsed disorderly crowd. Walmart’s reported arrangements were also limited and location-dependent, rather than an invitation for every customer to show up expecting a console. The Associated Press’s June 5 launch coverage documented launch-day lines.

If your preorder was canceled

The cancellation reports did not establish a common cause, so customers could not infer from the coverage alone whether a particular order failed because of payment details, inventory or another issue. A practical response was to check the retailer’s cancellation notice and account order status, then contact that retailer to confirm whether the order was canceled and whether any payment authorization or charge remained. If pursuing a replacement purchase, the June 2025 announcements offered limited, time-specific launch routes—not a guarantee of stock or a current availability guide.
