It is an Apple Cash feature for sending or receiving money in person: the sender opens Wallet, enters an amount, authenticates, and brings a compatible iPhone or Apple Watch close to the recipient’s device.
It is available only where Apple Cash is supported—the 50 U.S. states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico—and both people need eligible Apple devices, Apple Cash, and Wi-Fi or cellular connectivity.

What Tap to Cash does
Tap to Cash is a person-to-person payment feature built into Apple Cash in the Wallet app. It is designed for face-to-face situations such as splitting dinner, paying someone for a small purchase, or reimbursing a friend without exchanging a phone number, email address, QR code, or username.

Apple says Tap to Cash transactions can be identified by the Tap to Cash icon in recent Apple Cash activity. On Apple Watch, the transaction is labeled “via Tap to Cash.”
Tap to Cash is not anonymous. Although Apple says the participants do not need to share phone numbers or email addresses, the payment remains connected to Apple Cash accounts, transaction records, identity checks, and the financial-service providers supporting the service.
Tap to Cash vs. Apple Pay vs. Tap to Pay on iPhone
| Feature | What it is for | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| Tap to Cash | Sending Apple Cash to another person who is nearby | Two eligible Apple devices, Apple Cash, and connectivity |
| Apple Pay | Paying a participating merchant at a contactless terminal | A payment card in Wallet and a compatible merchant terminal |
| Tap to Pay on iPhone | Letting a supported merchant app turn an iPhone into a payment terminal | A supported payment app, payment-service-provider integration, and merchant setup |
Tap to Pay on iPhone is a separate merchant technology. It does not mean that any consumer can accept a credit-card payment simply by holding an iPhone nearby. Apple’s developer documentation explains the merchant requirements at Apple’s Tap to Pay on iPhone page.

What you need before using Tap to Cash
- An iPhone compatible with iOS 18 or later, or an Apple Watch compatible with watchOS 11 or later.
- Apple Cash set up and an eligible Apple Cash account.
- Wi-Fi or cellular connectivity for both participants.
- Face ID, Touch ID, or a device passcode for authentication.
- The other person’s compatible iPhone or Apple Watch.
- Enough available Apple Cash or another eligible funding method when the interface permits one.
“Every iPhone” is too broad: the requirement is every iPhone that supports iOS 18 or later, subject to Apple Cash eligibility and regional availability.

Standard Apple Cash use generally requires the user to be at least 18 and a U.S. resident. Children and teenagers may use Apple Cash Family when a family organizer sets it up, but some features may not be available. Apple Cash Family has its own account rules and limits.
Installing iOS 18 does not make Tap to Cash available worldwide. Apple Cash currently supports the 50 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico. International users may need a different person-to-person payment service.
How to send money with Tap to Cash
- Open the Wallet app.
- Tap the Apple Cash card.
- Tap Send or Request.
- Choose Tap to Cash.
- Enter the amount and, if desired, add a note.
- Tap Next or Continue. The wording can vary by device and software version.
- Authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode. Some interfaces may also ask you to double-click the side button.
- Hold the top of your iPhone near the other person’s iPhone or Apple Watch.
- Keep the devices close together while the recipient’s payment information appears and the recipient completes the receiving flow.
The side-button double-click used during authentication should not be confused with the normal Apple Pay merchant flow. The Tap to Cash process begins inside Wallet → Apple Cash → Send or Request.

A close-proximity exchange may be quick, but Apple Cash can still apply account reviews or security checks. Do not assume that funds will always be available immediately.
Limits and fees
Apple says Tap to Cash transactions are limited to $2,000 sent or received during a rolling seven-day period. That is not necessarily the only limit affecting the transaction. Apple Cash also has separate limits for sending and receiving, account balances, adding money, bank transfers, and Apple Cash Family accounts.
Apple says there is no fee to send, receive, or request money using Apple Cash. Cashing out is different:

- Instant Transfer: transfers money to an eligible U.S.-issued debit card, but Apple lists a 1.7% fee, with a $0.25 minimum and $25 maximum. Apple shows the exact fee before you complete the transfer.

Privacy and security
The practical privacy benefit is that the participants can exchange money without giving each other a phone number or email address. Apple also describes Tap to Cash as avoiding the need to exchange QR codes or usernames.
That does not make the payment untraceable. Apple Cash maintains account and transaction information, and financial-service providers may require identity verification or security reviews. Apple identifies Green Dot Bank as the Apple Cash service provider and says Apple Payments Services LLC is a service provider, not a bank. Apple’s Apple Cash privacy documentation explains the information used in the transaction.
Authenticate the payment carefully and check the amount before bringing the devices together. If you send money to the wrong person or enter the wrong amount, do not assume the payment can simply be reversed. Consult Apple’s current transaction-support guidance and Apple Cash terms for cancellation, dispute, and recipient-contact options.
What to do if Tap to Cash is missing or fails
“Tap to Cash” does not appear
Check these likely causes:
- Apple Cash has not been set up.
- The iPhone is not running iOS 18 or later, or the Apple Watch is not running watchOS 11 or later.
- You are outside Apple Cash’s supported U.S. service area.
- The account is restricted, ineligible, or undergoing review.
- You are looking at a regular Apple Pay card flow instead of opening the Apple Cash card and selecting Send or Request.
Apple’s Apple Cash troubleshooting page is the appropriate next step for account-specific problems.

The payment does not complete when the devices touch
- Confirm that both devices are compatible.
- Confirm that both people have Apple Cash set up and are eligible to use it.
- Make sure both devices have Wi-Fi or cellular service.
- Check that the sender completed authentication.
- Hold the devices close together and keep them there through the on-screen handoff.
- Check whether a Tap to Cash or broader Apple Cash limit has been reached.
- Check whether either account is locked, restricted, or under security review.
Tap to Cash is not an offline cash substitute. If either device lacks usable connectivity, the transaction may not complete normally.
When Tap to Cash is the right choice
Tap to Cash is most useful when both people are physically together, both use compatible Apple devices, and both are eligible for Apple Cash in the United States. Its main advantage is convenience without exchanging contact details.
Use another option when:
- The recipient is not nearby and you need a remote payment.
- One participant uses Android.
- You are outside Apple Cash’s supported U.S. region.
- The payment exceeds the $2,000 rolling seven-day Tap to Cash limit.
- You need a recurring or larger transfer with different account protections or limits.
- You are paying a business at a normal contactless checkout terminal.
For those situations, Apple Cash through Messages, Venmo, Cash App, PayPal, or a bank transfer may be more suitable, depending on the participants and location. For merchant checkout, use Apple Pay. For a business that wants to accept contactless cards on an iPhone, use a supported Tap to Pay on iPhone payment app.

The bottom line
Tap to Cash is a convenient, narrow Apple Cash feature: it lets two eligible people in the United States exchange money in person by bringing compatible iPhones or Apple Watch devices close together. It is not merchant Apple Pay, it does not work offline, and it is not a universal replacement for Venmo, Cash App, or other cross-platform services.
To use it, start in Wallet—not the ordinary merchant checkout flow—and make sure Apple Cash, compatible software, connectivity, and account eligibility are all in place.
