Taiwanese agricultural groups signed letters of intent in September 2025 for corn and soybean purchases involving Arkansas, with the Arkansas-related value reported at up to US$5.56 billion. That is an announced purchasing plan—not proof that the goods have been delivered, the full amount spent, or final prices set.
What the Taiwanese groups agreed to
Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders announced that two Taiwanese agricultural industry groups had signed letters of intent. The Arkansas Advocate reported that the Taiwan Feed Industry was associated with a commitment to buy 8.5 million metric tons of corn and corn products. It identified the Taiwan Vegetable Oil Manufacturers Association as the soybean buyer, but the soybean quantity printed in its search-result text is anomalous and cannot be treated as verified. Focus Taiwan, citing the Central News Agency, also reported letters of intent involving corn and soybean sales to Taiwan totaling up to US$5.56 billion. What “up to US$5.56 billion” means
The US$5.56 billion figure is the reported maximum value of the Arkansas-related letters of intent, not a finalized contract price. According to the Arkansas Advocate, the buying period runs from 2025 through 2029, and importers still need to negotiate final prices. The eventual value therefore depends on those negotiations and on what purchases are ultimately made.

A letter of intent records a stated intention to proceed; by itself, it does not establish completed transactions. The reports do not show that every planned purchase has been finalized, delivered, or paid for.
What is known—and not known—about the soybean quantity
The Arkansas Advocate search-result text renders the soybean commitment as “6.5 metric tons.” That figure is anomalous in the context of the reported multibillion-dollar total and the corn volume. The signed letters and a relevant official announcement were not available to verify the intended figure. It would be misleading to silently change the unit or add a “million” that the available reporting does not establish.

How this differs from Taiwan’s broader U.S. pledge
Taiwan News separately reported a pledge by a Taiwanese agricultural trade mission to purchase more than US$10 billion in U.S. farm products over four years. That figure covers a broader range of U.S. agricultural products; it is not an Arkansas-only amount and should not be added to the up-to-US$5.56-billion Arkansas-related figure. Taiwan News

Why Arkansas officials welcomed the announcement
Sanders framed the announcement as support for Arkansas farmers. In a statement quoted by the Arkansas Advocate, she said: “Today’s announcement is great news for Arkansas and especially our row crop farmers, who need all the assistance they can get right now.” The quote reflects the governor’s response to the announced letters, not confirmation of fulfillment.
