Mike Sievert did not simply leave T-Mobile. The company announced on September 22, 2025, that Srinivasan “Srini” Gopalan would become president and CEO on November 1, 2025. Sievert moved into newly created roles as T-Mobile’s vice chairman and vice chairman of its board, with an initial term scheduled through November 1, 2026, subject to extension.
As of August 18, 2026, Gopalan remains T-Mobile’s president and CEO. The handoff was presented as a planned succession during a period of strong reported operating performance, not as a firing, emergency replacement or confirmed permanent retirement.
What changed at T-Mobile?
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| When was it announced? | September 22, 2025 |
| When did the change take effect? | November 1, 2025 |
| New president and CEO | Srinivasan “Srini” Gopalan |
| Sievert’s new positions | Vice chairman of T-Mobile and vice chairman of the board |
| Initial vice-chairman term | Scheduled to end November 1, 2026, subject to extension |
T-Mobile’s announcement and its SEC Form 8-K describe a succession process rather than a termination for cause or an abrupt resignation. “Stepping down as CEO” therefore describes Sievert’s change in job, not an immediate departure from the company.
Why T-Mobile says the succession happened
The board and Sievert said they had conducted a comprehensive succession-planning process to prepare T-Mobile for its next phase of growth and continued “Un-carrier” leadership. The company identified Gopalan’s operating experience and digital-transformation background as relevant to that next phase.

That explanation does not establish that the board was dissatisfied with Sievert, that an undisclosed crisis forced the change, or that T-Mobile intended a wholesale strategy reversal. It also does not prove that Sievert permanently retired on November 1, 2025. The available filings instead show a phased transition in which he retained senior responsibilities and board involvement.
What Sievert accomplished as CEO
Sievert became T-Mobile’s CEO in 2020, succeeding John Legere, as T-Mobile completed its merger with Sprint. His tenure covered the integration of the combined wireless businesses and the effort to extend the company’s “Un-carrier” positioning into a larger network, broadband and connectivity company. T-Mobile’s biography for Mike Sievert outlines that progression.
T-Mobile called Sievert one of the most value-creating CEOs in global telecommunications history. That is the company’s characterization, not an independently verified industry ranking. A more concrete way to understand the backdrop is through the company’s reported results and expansion priorities.
The reported operating backdrop
In its first-quarter 2026 release, T-Mobile reported 217,000 postpaid net account additions, $18.8 billion in service revenue, $9.2 billion in Core Adjusted EBITDA and $4.6 billion in adjusted free cash flow. It said service revenue grew 11% year over year and postpaid service revenue grew 15%, and that it raised guidance after the quarter. These are company-reported figures; Core Adjusted EBITDA and adjusted free cash flow are non-GAAP measures and are not substitutes for GAAP net income or cash-flow measures. The figures and definitions appear in T-Mobile’s Q1 2026 release.

Who is Srini Gopalan?
Srinivasan “Srini” Gopalan is a telecommunications and technology executive whose experience includes operations, digital transformation and customer-focused business strategy. He had held senior positions within the broader Deutsche Telekom organization, which matters because Deutsche Telekom is T-Mobile’s controlling shareholder.
Gopalan became T-Mobile’s chief operating officer in March 2025, only months before becoming CEO. Calling him an internal operator is accurate; implying that he had spent many years running T-Mobile’s U.S. operations is not. His short tenure as COO was supplemented by his earlier Deutsche Telekom experience, which the board presented as preparation for the role. The appointment details are documented in the SEC filing.
What Sievert’s continuing role means
As vice chairman of the company and board, Sievert was expected to advise on strategy, innovation, talent development and external relations while helping preserve institutional knowledge. That structure can reduce disruption after a leadership change, but it also means accountability is not as cleanly separated as it would be in an immediate departure.

The 8-K states that Sievert’s new annual base salary would be $7 million effective on the transition date. It also says he generally would not be eligible for annual short-term incentive awards or long-term incentive grants after that date unless T-Mobile determined otherwise. Those terms should not be labeled a “retirement package” without a separate filing or statement using that description.
What Gopalan inherits
Wireless competition and customer value
Gopalan must defend T-Mobile’s position against Verizon and AT&T while balancing promotions and value-oriented pricing against margins, cash generation and shareholder returns. A strong quarter in one metric does not establish that every customer segment or business line is equally healthy.
Broadband and fixed wireless
T-Mobile has been expanding beyond traditional mobile service into fixed wireless and broader broadband. The next CEO must determine how aggressively to add customers while funding network capacity and maintaining service quality.
Network, spectrum and technology investment
The company’s agenda includes network upgrades, spectrum, fiber, AI-enabled network capabilities and eventual 6G development. These are management priorities, not guaranteed outcomes, and they require substantial capital and disciplined execution.

Post-Sprint scale and integration
T-Mobile now operates at the scale created by the Sprint combination. Gopalan inherits the continuing work of turning that scale into reliable customer experience, efficient operations and sustainable growth rather than relying indefinitely on merger-related momentum.
Enterprise and emerging businesses
T-Mobile’s 2026 communications emphasize enterprise, broadband, “smart adjacencies” and other growth opportunities. In July 2026, the company announced additional leadership evolution, including the appointment of Chris Sambar as chief enterprise officer, alongside discussion of AI, 5G Advanced and future connectivity. Those plans are described in the leadership announcement.

The evidence points to continuity with an emphasis shift, not a wholesale reset.
- Continuity: Gopalan is an internal appointment, the transition followed a stated succession plan, and T-Mobile continues to emphasize network performance, customer experience, value, wireless growth and broadband.
- Possible emphasis shift: Gopalan’s background and the company’s subsequent leadership moves put more weight on digital transformation, operational execution, enterprise services, AI-enabled networks and future connectivity.
This is an analytical reading of the appointment and stated priorities, not a confirmed promise that T-Mobile will abandon the “Un-carrier” model or adopt a radically different strategy.

What the change means for customers and investors
Customers
A CEO succession does not automatically change existing wireless plans, device-financing terms, network coverage, promotion eligibility or customer-service policies. Any change to those items requires a separate company announcement or plan-specific notice.
Investors
Investors should watch whether Gopalan can sustain postpaid growth, broadband expansion and network differentiation while controlling promotional costs and capital spending. They should also distinguish GAAP results from non-GAAP measures such as Core Adjusted EBITDA and adjusted free cash flow, and assess whether retaining Sievert clarifies or complicates leadership accountability.
The Bottom Line
Mike Sievert gave up T-Mobile’s CEO role on November 1, 2025, but did not simply leave the company. Srini Gopalan became CEO in a planned internal succession, while Sievert remained vice chairman and a board vice chairman. The transition’s real test is whether Gopalan can extend T-Mobile’s wireless success into broadband, enterprise and technology growth without weakening its value proposition or operating culture.
