Pixel 9’s Satellite SOS Probably Won’t Be Free Forever

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google never promised Pixel 9 Satellite SOS would be permanently free. The company promised no additional charge for the first two years after device activation. A Pixel 9 activated around August 22, 2024 therefore reached the end of its included period around August 22, 2026; phones activated later generally reach that point two years after their own activation date. Google has not announced a post-trial price or confirmed whether access will remain free.

What Google actually promised

Google’s original Pixel 9 announcement described Satellite SOS as available in the United States at no extra cost for the first two years. Later Pixel announcements clarified that the period runs for two years after device activation, not automatically from the product’s launch date. See Google’s announcements at Google’s Pixel 9 launch post and its March 2025 Pixel Drop update.

That wording creates a definite limit on the introductory benefit. It does not say that every Pixel 9 loses service on one universal date, and it does not promise a permanent free emergency tier.

Activation example Approximate end of two-year period What is established
August 22, 2024 August 22, 2026 Two years after that device’s activation
October 1, 2024 October 1, 2026 Two years after that device’s activation
Any date in 2025 The corresponding date in 2027 Two years after activation, subject to Google’s entitlement records

A used phone may have less time remaining if Google ties the benefit to the device’s earlier activation record. Google’s public wording does not establish whether eligibility follows the hardware, the original buyer, a Google account, or another record, so check the phone’s current Satellite SOS status rather than relying on the purchase date.

Has Google announced what happens afterward?

No confirmed post-trial price is published in the official Google material cited here. There is no established monthly or annual fee, subscription tier, automatic-renewal policy, bundled Google subscription, carrier subsidy, or country-specific price. Google also has not confirmed whether the feature will continue free, become paid, be replaced by a carrier service, or be discontinued.

A paid continuation is plausible because Google repeatedly limits the no-charge promise to the first two years, and satellite-network and emergency-response operations have ongoing costs. That is an inference, not an announced plan. Owners should treat continued free access as unconfirmed rather than assume either a future bill or a guaranteed free emergency service.

What Pixel Satellite SOS does—and does not do

Satellite SOS is an emergency pathway for contacting emergency services when cellular and Wi-Fi networks are unavailable. It can transmit answers to an emergency questionnaire, provide location information, and let you choose whether to notify emergency contacts. Google’s support instructions are at Pixel Satellite SOS support.

  • Gemini AI Integration: Built-in Gemini AI assistant supercharges your productivity and creativity, helping you accomplish tasks faster, generate content, and unlock new possibilities right from your smartphone without needing additional apps or subscriptions

It is not a satellite phone, broadband connection, or general-purpose satellite messenger. Google does not describe it as a way to conduct ordinary chats, send media, make satellite voice calls, track a trip continuously, or exchange routine check-ins with friends. Carrier satellite products and dedicated communicators are separate services.

Supported phones and countries

Google’s current support documentation says Satellite SOS is available on Pixel devices since Pixel 9 except Pixel 9a. Another Google help page still presents the original lineup—Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold—so documentation has not been perfectly uniform as availability expanded. Verify your exact model and software in Google’s live support pages, including Google’s device-support page.

Google initially launched the feature in the United States. Its March 2025 announcement described expansion to Canada, Europe, Hawaii and Alaska, and a June 2025 update added Australia. Current support documentation lists the United States, Puerto Rico, Canada, Australia and numerous European markets, but availability can still depend on local emergency agencies, government approvals, carrier arrangements, language, network conditions and software activation. It is not a worldwide guarantee.

How to use Satellite SOS in an emergency

  1. Dial the local emergency number—for example, 911 in the United States, 999 in the United Kingdom or 112 in much of Europe.
  2. If the phone detects that cellular and Wi-Fi are unavailable, tap Satellite SOS in the dialer.
  3. Tap Use Satellite SOS, then Start.
  4. Complete the emergency questionnaire as accurately as possible.
  5. Respond to prompts about notifying your emergency contacts.
  6. Go outdoors and follow the on-screen instructions to orient and tilt the phone toward a satellite.
  7. Remain in position while waiting for replies. Connection and response times vary by location and conditions.
  8. When the emergency is resolved, use the on-screen End control to close the satellite conversation.

You can familiarize yourself with the positioning process through Settings → Safety & emergency → Satellite SOS → Demo. A demo teaches the interface; it does not prove that a real emergency connection will succeed everywhere.

Requirements and failure points

  • Clear sky: Trees, buildings, canyon walls, steep terrain and other obstructions can block or degrade the link.
  • Outdoor positioning: Google instructs users to remain outside and physically follow the positioning prompts.
  • Default app: Google Messages must be the default messaging app. Switching to another default can disable Satellite SOS.
  • Supported software: Required Android updates and service registration may be needed before the option appears.
  • Supported location: Country, region, language, emergency-agency and network arrangements affect availability.
  • Emergency use only: The feature is intended for exceptional situations when no other way to reach emergency services exists.

Do not wait indoors for a response, assume the feature works on a Pixel 9a, or treat the presence of a demo as a rescue guarantee. Satellite access can fail because of geography, obstructions, software, regional restrictions or emergency-service availability.

Who operates the underlying service?

Google announced Pixel Satellite SOS with satellite-connectivity provider Skylo and Garmin’s emergency-response operation. Garmin separately announced that its emergency-response coordination service was integrated into the Pixel experience; see Garmin’s announcement.

Google Pixel 9 - Unlocked Android Smartphone with Gemini, 24-Hour Battery, Advanced Camera, and 6.3" Actua Display - Obsidian - 128 GB
  • Google Pixel 9 with Gemini gets the best of Google AI first, so you can take amazing photos, make edits like magic, and get things done even easier
  • Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan[1]; it works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers
  • The award-winning Pixel Camera includes a 50 MP main sensor for incredible image and video quality, and a new 48 MP ultrawide camera for stunning Macro Focus
  • Make your photos better than you can imagine with Google AI; take a picture and be in it too with Add Me[2]; Best Take helps everyone look their best; and with Magic Editor, you can reframe photos, reimagine the scenery, and more[2]
  • Get more info quickly with Gemini, your built-in AI assistant[3]; instead of typing, use Gemini Live; it follows along even if you change the topic or switch the question[30]; and Pixel Screenshots helps you save things you’ll want to remember later

Google controls the Pixel-facing product, Skylo supplies satellite connectivity infrastructure, and Garmin Response participates in emergency coordination. Those relationships help explain why future pricing could depend on contracts, regional partners and Google’s product strategy. Pixel Satellite SOS is not the same product as a Garmin inReach retail subscription.

Privacy and information sharing

Emergency use can involve sharing device, location and contact information with Google, emergency services and satellite-service providers. Review Google’s current disclosures before relying on the feature, particularly if you have selected emergency contacts or have privacy restrictions on location sharing. The emergency questionnaire and location transmission are core parts of the service, not optional ordinary texting features.

Garmin inReach for regular off-grid travel

Garmin inReach is a better fit for hikers, climbers, boaters, hunters and travelers who need routine two-way satellite messaging, tracking or scheduled check-ins rather than emergency-only contact. Garmin says an active inReach subscription is required and recommends testing the service before travel; see its inReach support guidance and product hub. It requires separate hardware, another battery and recurring service costs. The cited Garmin material does not establish a current plan price.

Carrier satellite messaging

Some carriers offer direct-to-device satellite messaging on compatible phones. Eligibility, roaming, eSIM requirements, coverage and pricing vary by carrier and plan. A carrier offering does not establish Google’s own post-trial Satellite SOS policy, so verify compatibility with your exact Pixel model and account.

Starlink for broader connectivity

Starlink’s service-plan page lists Residential Lite at US$30 per month, Residential at US$50 per month and Roam 100GB at US$45 per month, along with trial language and Standby Mode. Details can change; see Starlink’s current plans. These are broader connectivity products, generally involving separate Starlink equipment or service, and are not a direct replacement for Pixel’s phone-based emergency SOS.

How to plan for the end of the included period

  1. Open the Satellite SOS settings and note the status shown for your device.
  2. Confirm your exact Pixel model, Android version, Google Messages default-app setting and regional availability.
  3. Learn the outdoor positioning procedure before a trip, without treating the demo as a reliability test.
  4. If you routinely travel beyond cellular coverage, compare a dedicated communicator or compatible carrier service before your Pixel entitlement expires.
  5. Watch Google’s official Pixel and support pages for any price, renewal or eligibility announcement.

Bottom line for Pixel 9 owners

Pixel 9 Satellite SOS is a useful emergency backup during Google’s included period, but its long-term value is not yet priced or guaranteed. Google promised no extra charge for two years after activation—not forever. Launch-period activations reached that milestone around August 22, 2026, while later activations generally run longer. Until Google announces what follows, keep the phone updated, understand the feature’s limits and choose a dedicated communicator only if you need routine off-grid communication.
