T-Mobile did not buy Mint Mobile as a standalone company: it acquired Ka’ena Corporation, Mint’s parent, for a purchase price that T-Mobile announced could reach $1.35 billion. That was a maximum announced value, not a confirmed final amount paid or Ryan Reynolds’s personal payout. T-Mobile later reported a $956 million initial fair value for the upfront payment and a separate earnout of up to $420 million, subject to performance and contractual adjustments.
Did T-Mobile buy Mint Mobile?
Yes, as part of a broader acquisition. On March 15, 2023, T-Mobile announced it would acquire all of Ka’ena Corporation and its subsidiaries, which included Mint Mobile, Ultra Mobile and Plum. T-Mobile’s announcement described the brands as generally operating as a separate business unit. That describes the plan at announcement; it does not establish that every operational detail remained unchanged after the deal closed.
T-Mobile’s 2024 filing describes Ka’ena as a provider of prepaid mobile services through Mint and Ultra, and says the company also offered a selection of wireless devices. The transaction therefore brought more than Mint alone under T-Mobile’s ownership.
How much did T-Mobile pay for Mint Mobile?
The $1.35 billion figure was the maximum purchase price announced in March 2023—not a confirmed final total. T-Mobile initially said the consideration would be 39% cash and 61% T-Mobile stock, with the actual amount subject to specified performance indicators and contractual adjustments. T-Mobile’s announcement set out those proposed terms.

In its 2024 Form 10-K, filed in 2025, T-Mobile reported an initial fair value of $956 million for the upfront payment, before subsequent adjustments. The filing also notes that part of that payment settled the prior wholesale relationship. It described a separate performance-based earnout of up to an additional $420 million, payable on August 1, 2026, depending on Ka’ena’s specified performance indicators. These figures are distinct: the upfront payment’s initial fair value is not the final total purchase price, and the earnout is contingent rather than a guaranteed payment. T-Mobile’s 2024 Form 10-K contains the later accounting disclosure.
When did the Mint Mobile deal close?
The acquisition closed on May 1, 2024. T-Mobile’s 2024 Form 10-K reported that Ka’ena became a wholly owned subsidiary on that date.

How much did Ryan Reynolds make from the Mint Mobile sale?
The reviewed transaction sources do not disclose Reynolds’s personal proceeds or his ownership percentage. The Associated Press identified him as a part owner of Mint when the deal was announced, but that does not establish how much he received. It would be misleading to divide the announced maximum price among owners or otherwise estimate his payout from the public figures.
T-Mobile’s announcement said Reynolds would continue in a creative role for Mint. He said, “I am so proud of the entire Mint team and so excited for what’s to come,” in that announcement. The statement describes the role T-Mobile announced; it does not disclose his compensation or confirm every later operational arrangement. The Associated Press report also quoted T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert: “Over the long-term, we’ll also benefit from applying the marketing formula Mint has become famous for across more parts of T-Mobile.”
