A sweep-in fixed deposit links a bank account to term deposits so money can move automatically under the bank’s rules. A regular fixed deposit (FD) is held for a chosen term without that linked-account feature. Sweep-in arrangements can make funds easier to access, but withdrawal units, thresholds and interest deductions differ by bank. This comparison is India-focused; check the current terms and rates for your specific account and deposit before choosing.
1. How the money moves
A regular FD is booked as a term deposit. A sweep-in facility adds an automatic link between that deposit and a savings or current account, but banks do not all move money in the same direction.

- Low-balance trigger: ICICI describes a linked FD that can supply funds when the account balance falls below a specified threshold. See ICICI Bank’s FD FAQs for its facility and account terms.
- Surplus sweep-out: SBI’s Multi Option Deposit (MOD) describes surplus above a savings-account threshold moving into term deposits. Its MOD terms apply to that scheme.
“Sweep-in FD” is therefore not one uniform product: confirm whether your bank draws from a linked FD when cash is short, moves surplus cash into deposits, or offers a different arrangement.
2. How quickly and in what amounts you can access the money
With a regular FD, accessing principal before maturity generally means asking the bank to close or break the deposit under its applicable terms. A sweep facility may automate that process when account cash is needed, but the amount released and the deposits affected depend on the bank’s rules.
#1 Best Overall
For example, HDFC says deposits created through sweep-out instructions may be broken in units. SBI’s MOD terms specify reverse sweeps in ₹5,000 units and describe full reversal when the remaining MOD reaches ₹15,000. SBI also describes a LIFO withdrawal order, with FIFO or LIFO options. These are scheme-specific examples, not standard rules for every bank. See HDFC Bank’s sweep-in facility information and SBI’s MOD terms.
3. What happens to interest when money is withdrawn early
Automatic access does not guarantee that withdrawn principal earns the original contracted FD rate. A premature withdrawal may be recalculated using the rate applicable to the period the money was actually held, and a bank may also apply a penalty under the relevant product terms.

HDFC’s terms specify a 1 percentage-point reduction in the stated premature-closure circumstances, including sweep-in or partial closure. That figure applies to the circumstances described in HDFC’s premature-withdrawal terms; it should not be assumed for another bank or deposit category.
The Reserve Bank of India says banks may not normally refuse premature withdrawal of term deposits held by individuals and Hindu Undivided Families. That general guidance does not make the interest calculation or penalty identical across banks. Read the RBI’s term-deposit FAQs alongside your bank’s product terms.

4. Which thresholds and account conditions apply
A sweep facility may require a minimum account balance or set a balance at which deposits are created or broken. Those account rules remain relevant even if the linked FD is large.
HDFC states that the selected savings or current account’s average-balance requirement continues to apply regardless of the FD value. HDFC also says only the principal of linked FDs—not accrued interest—is considered for sweep-in, and that the account and deposit name(s) must match. SBI’s MOD sets its own balance thresholds and deposit amounts; its figures should not be treated as market-wide requirements.

SBI MOD figures shown on its scheme page
| MOD term | SBI scheme figure or rule |
|---|---|
| Threshold for creating a deposit | ₹50,000 |
| Resultant savings balance | ₹35,000 |
| Minimum term deposit | ₹15,000 |
| Additional deposit amounts | Multiples of ₹5,000 |
| Reverse-sweep unit | ₹5,000 |
| Full reversal condition | When the remaining MOD reaches ₹15,000 |
These are SBI MOD terms listed on its official scheme page, not general sweep-FD thresholds.
5. Tenure and renewal are product-specific
A regular FD’s term and renewal instructions are set when it is opened. A sweep-linked deposit also follows the particular bank’s product terms; do not assume it shares the tenure or renewal rules of another bank’s FD.
Best Value
- ICICI says its regular FD tenures range from 7 days to 10 years, and that an auto-renewed deposit uses the rate prevailing at renewal. These are ICICI product details, not a general range or rule for all banks. See its FD FAQs.
- SBI lists a 1-to-5-year tenure for MOD on its scheme page.
What to check before choosing
Compare the linked account and FD as one arrangement, rather than deciding from the advertised FD rate alone. Review the bank’s current documents for:
