Vancouver-based Svante Technologies Inc. announced an investment commitment of up to US$100 million from Canada Growth Fund on August 15, 2024, to advance commercial carbon-capture and carbon-removal projects in Canada and the United States. The financing was structured as convertible notes: US$50 million was designated for an initial tranche, while a possible second tranche of up to US$50 million depended on project requirements and approval by both organizations. The announcement did not establish that the full amount would be disbursed.
What the financing commitment covers
Canada Growth Fund (CGF) and Svante described the commitment as financing for commercial projects, with an emphasis on first-of-a-kind (FOAK) deployments and a focus on Canadian projects. The announcement identified two distinct tranches:
| Tranche | Announced amount | Purpose and conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Initial | US$50 million | For FOAK commercial projects already underway. |
| Potential second tranche | Up to an additional US$50 million | For project development and construction alongside co-development partners; subject to project-specific requirements and approval by both CGF and Svante. |
These are terms announced on August 15, 2024, not confirmation of subsequent drawdowns. The announcement used the phrase “up to” and made the additional tranche conditional. It described the instrument as convertible note(s), rather than a grant or an unconditional cash payment. Canada Growth Fund and Svante’s announcement provides the transaction terms.
What Svante does
Svante is an industrial technology company, not a consumer-equipment provider. It says it makes nanoengineered filters and modular rotary contactor machines to capture or remove carbon dioxide. The systems are designed for two different settings:
#1 Best Overall
- Electrochemical sensor technology detects CO gas
- Easy installation, no wiring needed, detects during a power failure by operating on 2-AA batteries (included); Install on a wall of your home or place on a tabletop
- Green LED indicates power to the carbon monoxide detector, while an 85-decibel alarm & a red LED indicates the presence of carbon monoxide
- Event Memory records the last time carbon monoxide was detected or when the unit was last tested
- Industrial emissions: Capture at facilities that emit CO2, known as point-source capture.
- Direct air capture: Remove CO2 from ambient air, a pathway GeekWire identified in its coverage of the company.
Svante says captured CO2 is concentrated for storage or industrial use. The announcement also described its Integrated Project Development Services, an in-house advisory and financing offering intended to help customers reduce risk on FOAK projects and reach a final investment decision. The announcement did not provide commercial terms or independent validation of the service’s performance.
What the Burnaby facility figures mean
When the financing was announced, Svante was constructing a 141,000-square-foot facility in Burnaby, British Columbia, intended to house filter manufacturing, its global headquarters and research and development. The announcement said filters made there would be capable of serving capture plants with capacity of 10 million tonnes of CO2 annually. That figure describes the announced potential capacity of plants that could use the planned facility’s filters; it is not a measure of current production, operating plant capacity or CO2 already captured.

- Easy Installation - simply plug-in to a standard, 120V outlet in your home
- 2-AA battery backup provides protection during a power outage
- 85-decibel alarm announces when carbon monoxide is detected
- Peak Level Memory records the last time carbon monoxide was detected or when the unit was last tested
- Test-Hush Button makes testing the detector or silencing false alarms easy
Svante’s CEO Claude Letourneau described the facility as a US$145 million capital investment in the August 2024 announcement. CGF, described there as an arm’s-length public investment vehicle, said it had a $15 billion mandate. Those figures provide context for the organizations and facility, but do not change the conditional structure of the Svante commitment.

The financing announcement documents a proposed route to support commercial deployment, particularly early FOAK projects. It does not establish whether either tranche was ultimately drawn, whether the Burnaby facility has since been completed, or whether the stated annual capacity potential has been achieved. GeekWire’s report, published August 20, 2024, matched the announcement’s central terms and company context: GeekWire’s coverage of Svante’s financing.

- Keep your family safe with this easy to use plug in carbon monoxide alarm; It works with any standard outlet and also has a battery backup for continuous monitoring of Carbon Monoxide levels, even if there's a power failure
- Features an advanced electrochemical carbon monoxide sensor that accurately detects carbon monoxide levels, no matter where the detector is placed in the room
- Simple to use, with a single test/silence button; a loud 85 decibel alarm sounds when Carbon Monoxide levels reach dangerous levels. Low battery signal mute, quiets low battery signal for upto 8 hours
- To ensure complete protection make sure to place one on each level of your home and in each bedroom
- 7 year limited warranty; Equipped with end of life signal chirp, so you know when it’s time to replace the unit for safety
For readers assessing the news, the distinction is between financing announced and results demonstrated: the commitment was intended to help develop and build projects, while the facility and capacity figures were prospective claims at the time of the announcement.
