There is no single celebrity version of a “first big paycheck.” Some remembered helping family, others bought a car or moved out, and a few saved the money or chose a small personal treat. These are individual recollections—not a survey of how celebrities spend—and the milestones vary from a first big check to a first million-dollar paycheck or a memorable first purchase.
Some first big checks went toward family
Matt Damon helped his mother and brother
Matt Damon’s first big check, for the 1990 film Rising Son, was reported as $25,000 by Fortune in 2023, drawing on an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. Damon said, “I bought my brother a car and put my mom through her Ph.D. program.” He called it “a really cool feeling.” The account does not say that he spent the entire check on those costs.
Nicole Kidman bought a washing machine for her parents
In a recollection reproduced by Glamour in 2019, Nicole Kidman said her first big paycheck went toward a washing machine for her parents. She later bought herself a pair of boots she remembered as the coolest she had ever seen.
Jaimie Alexander also bought for her parents
Glamour’s roundup also reports that Jaimie Alexander bought a car for her parents. It does not give a price or establish more specifically which paycheck marked the milestone.

Cars and a new place to live meant practical independence
James Brown chose a car over a home
In a June 1988 interview republished online by SPIN in 2019, James Brown recalled that the first expensive thing he bought with his first big paycheck was a car. “I wanted a home, but a man has to have a way to get around,” he said. The account is from the historical interview, not a new one.
America Ferrera bought a used car for auditions
America Ferrera told Glamour that she put her first paycheck toward a used 2000 Mitsubishi Mirage, which she remembered costing about $12,000. She described it as useful for getting to auditions in Los Angeles, where she had relied on buses, walking, biking, and rides from siblings. The price is her recollection, not an independently verified transaction figure.
Emily Blunt used her first paycheck to move out
Fortune reports that Emily Blunt spent her first paycheck on moving out of her parents’ home and renting an apartment. The account emphasizes the step toward independence rather than a particular item.

Other recollections range from saving to small treats
Serena Williams banked a million-dollar paycheck
Glamour reports that Serena Williams said she did not touch her first million-dollar paycheck and deposited it in the bank. That is a specifically described million-dollar milestone; it should not be treated as an ordinary first paycheck or as evidence about how much she later spent.
Tiffany Haddish opened an account and bought candy
In a 2018 TIME feature, Tiffany Haddish recalled opening a checking account and treating herself to a box of Snickers. Glamour separately recounts her story about buying a house and feeling proud that she could provide for herself. The reports do not establish that the house and candy came from the same paycheck or milestone.

In the same TIME feature, Jennifer Lopez reflected, “Every time I made money, it was big to me,” describing her childhood in the Bronx and having holes in her shoes. Glamour also recounts that she leased a Mercedes after getting a regular series, but frames that as a career milestone rather than definitively her first big paycheck.
Cillian Murphy was unsure which sound equipment he bought
Fortune’s report of the Hollywood Reporter interview quotes Cillian Murphy saying, “I think I bought like a record player—or a sound system.” He also wondered whether record players were considered cool at the time. His recollection does not settle which item it was.
Brie Larson recalled an electric guitar

Kerry Washington saved per diem money for a laptop
Glamour reports that Kerry Washington hid her Save the Last Dance per diem money under her mattress, set a budget, and used cash from the three-month shoot to buy her first laptop. Per diem money is not the same as a paycheck, so this belongs alongside—but not as a direct example of—a first big paycheck.

“First big paycheck” is a personal milestone, not a uniform financial category. The accounts include a first big check, a first paycheck, a first million-dollar paycheck, per diem cash, earnings from a guest role, and a first memorable purchase. Some details come from direct recollections reproduced in features; others are secondary reports of interviews. The examples can illustrate very different priorities, but they cannot establish what celebrities generally do with early earnings or whether a purchase was affordable or financially wise.
That distinction matters in entertainment work, where income can be irregular. In a 2020 Backstage interview, business manager Paul Papile said, “For most, the inflow of money will stop and go,” and discussed staying grounded and planning a financial safety net. That is general context about variable acting income, not individualized advice or an assessment of any person’s choices.
