The handoff did not last as announced: in April 2020, PocketGamer.biz reported that Rogue had stopped supporting Vainglory and Super Evil had regained control of its servers.
What Super Evil announced in November 2019
GamesBeat and PocketGamer.biz reported that Andreessen Horowitz led Super Evil Megacorp’s $10.5 million financing round, announced November 6, 2019. GamesBeat reported that Vainglory had more than 45 million players at the time; that was a historical figure, not a current player count.
The studio said the financing would support Project Spellfire, its next game. In 2019 coverage, the project was described as a cross-platform multiplayer game, larger in scale than Vainglory, and aimed for release in 2020. GamesBeat also reported that development had been underway for 18 months as of November 2019. Both the development duration and release target describe the project at that time; the target does not establish that the game launched.
In explaining the handoff, CEO Kristian Segerstrale said the company wanted Vainglory “in the right hands” before refocusing the team. He also described Rogue’s role as taking on publishing and further development so Super Evil could focus resources on a future game. These comments expressed the studio’s intent, not proof that the arrangement would succeed. GamesBeat’s November 6, 2019 report and Game Developer’s coverage documented the announcement.

What the Rogue Games handoff was supposed to change
Rogue Games was to take over Vainglory publishing and live operations, allowing Super Evil to direct more of its resources toward Project Spellfire. GamesBeat reported that Rogue would work with Indian partner nCore, while five contractors from Vainglory’s team would remain involved. Rogue expected monthly updates. Those were reported plans and expectations, not a guarantee of the service Vainglory would receive over time.
The arrangement was a division of responsibilities rather than an announcement that Vainglory had ended: Rogue was to handle the ongoing publishing work while Super Evil pursued its next project. The studio’s own description of the move was part of its rationale for changing focus.

How the plan changed in 2020
By April 7, 2020, the picture had changed. PocketGamer.biz reported that Rogue had ceased support and planned to shut down the servers. Super Evil regained control of the servers before that shutdown, according to the same report. It also said in-game purchases had been switched off.
The report distinguished the Chinese version, operated by NetEase, from the service discussed in the handoff: it said the Chinese version remained live and unaffected at that time. This is a historical account of the situation in April 2020, not confirmation of Vainglory’s current availability or status. See PocketGamer.biz’s April 7, 2020 follow-up.

Announcement versus outcome
| Area | November 2019 announcement | April 2020 follow-up |
|---|---|---|
| Vainglory publishing and live operations | Rogue Games was to take over publishing and live operations, according to GamesBeat and Game Developer’s 2019 coverage. | PocketGamer.biz reported that Rogue had ceased support and Super Evil had regained server control. |
| Super Evil’s focus | The studio said the transition would free resources for Project Spellfire. | The 2020 report described the server-control change; it does not establish Super Evil’s later resource allocation. |
| Purchases and regional service | The 2019 announcement coverage described the planned transition. | PocketGamer.biz reported in-game purchases were switched off and the NetEase-operated Chinese version remained live and unaffected at that time. |
The financing and handoff coverage shows a studio using new funding and a publishing transition to prioritize a larger next game. The follow-up matters because the operational arrangement changed within months; neither the original plans nor the 2020 status report should be read as evidence of the games’ current status.
