His first-team time at the club was brief: BBC Sport reported that his last Sunderland appearance came in August 2017. The club terminated his contract in September 2018 after a dispute over his return from leave and fitness. Calling the deal an “expensive flop” is an assessment, not an official label, but the fee and outcome explain why the description stuck.
What Sunderland paid for Djilobodji
Sunderland completed the signing from Chelsea on 5 August 2016 for a reported £8 million, agreeing a four-year deal. He was manager David Moyes’s first signing for the club, according to the Premier League’s announcement.
That fee is reported rather than an audited account of the transfer. The Football Association’s register records the transaction details, but it does not establish a fee. The Guardian reported that Chelsea had paid Nantes £2.7 million for Djilobodji in 2015 and said Chelsea trebled its money when Sunderland bought him; those, too, are press-reported figures, not verified club-account totals.
Why Chelsea had signed him
Djilobodji had arrived at Chelsea from Nantes in 2015. The Guardian reported that his only appearance for Chelsea was as an 89th-minute substitute in a League Cup match at Walsall. In January 2016, he joined Werder Bremen on loan, where his contribution was more striking: on the final day of the Bundesliga season, he scored an 88th-minute winner against Eintracht Frankfurt that helped Bremen secure safety.

That late-season success offered a reason for Sunderland to take a chance on a defender with limited Chelsea playing time. It did not, however, translate into a sustained Sunderland role.
How his Sunderland spell ended
BBC Sport reported that Djilobodji’s last first-team appearance for Sunderland was in August 2017. In June 2018 he submitted a transfer request. The club allowed him unpaid leave in July to pursue a move, but he did not report for training in August.

On his return, Sunderland said he had comprehensively failed a fitness test. That was the club’s position as reported by the BBC, not an independently established medical finding. Sunderland terminated his contract in September 2018.
Why the signing is called a flop
The Guardian’s April 2018 retrospective described the transfer as “A disastrous buy at centre-half” and rated it 3/10. That score was the newspaper’s subjective verdict, not an official rating or a statistical measure.

The case for the “expensive flop” description rests on the contrast between the reported £8 million fee and a Sunderland first-team spell that, according to BBC Sport, ended in August 2017, followed by a contract termination the next year. The available reporting does not establish a complete appearance total, goals tally or match-by-match record, so a more precise numerical assessment of his contribution is not supported here.
