In a December 2, 2025, announcement, Sun Country said it would establish a new operational base at CVG in early 2026 and named January 31, 2026, as the official opening date. The airline described this as a step to support increased cargo operations and future growth in scheduled passenger service. Sun Country’s announcement gives the company’s plan and stated date; that date alone is not confirmation of what happened after opening.
What an operational base means in this plan
Sun Country said it would station cargo aircraft at CVG, with local crews beginning and ending their flight assignments there. The airline also said it would continue using shared facilities at the airport. The announcement therefore describes a crew-and-aircraft operating base, not a claim that Sun Country would build or own a dedicated terminal or cargo facility.
Why Sun Country chose CVG
The airline cited CVG’s role as a major Amazon air hub and sorting facility, growth in cargo activity at the airport, and passenger demand in the surrounding region. Those are Sun Country’s stated reasons for the move, not an independent ranking or assessment of CVG’s market position.

Sun Country president and CEO Jude Bricker tied cargo to the airline’s passenger strategy, saying: “Amazon and our cargo operation is a critical segment of our differentiated business model and enables our scheduled service seasonal flexibility and growth.”
How the base fits Sun Country’s cargo growth
Sun Country’s fiscal 2025 results show a broader expansion in its cargo business, though the reported figures do not measure CVG’s contribution. In its 2026 Form 10-K, the company reported cargo revenue of $155.027 million in 2025, an increase of $47.853 million, or 45%, compared with 2024. It said the increase was primarily due to additional aircraft and contractual rate increases. The filing also said all eight additional cargo aircraft covered by an amended air transportation services agreement had entered service during 2025. In its fourth-quarter and full-year 2025 results, Sun Country reported cargo block hours up 50.6% year over year and cargo revenue up 67.9% year over year for the fourth quarter. The company attributed the quarter’s growth primarily to eight additional cargo aircraft deployed earlier in the year. These are company-reported results for the quarter, not evidence of activity at CVG. The results release reports the period figures.
What the announcement said about hiring and other bases
At announcement time, Sun Country said it was actively hiring pilots in CVG and considering additional base locations to support Amazon cargo and scheduled-service growth. These statements describe the airline’s plans as of December 2, 2025; they do not establish its current recruiting status or whether another base was subsequently selected.

What is—and is not—confirmed about current operations
The available company announcement and filings establish the planned base, its announced opening date, and the airline’s rationale. They do not independently verify current aircraft placement, pilot headcount, or operating status at CVG. Sun Country’s fiscal 2025 cargo growth figures also cannot be attributed to the new base because they cover activity reported for the full year and do not identify CVG’s share.
