Amazon’s optional U.S. ad-free Prime Video add-on rose from $2.99 to $4.99 per month on April 10, 2026, and was renamed Prime Video Ultra. The change did not raise the price of Prime membership itself. Whether Ultra is worth the extra $2 a month depends on whether you’ll use its ad-free viewing, 4K/UHD and Dolby Atmos support, or higher stream and download limits.
What changed—and what did not
Amazon announced the price change on March 13, 2026. The optional ad-free subscription, previously $2.99 per month, became Prime Video Ultra at $4.99 per month on April 10. Amazon says the Prime membership price itself was unchanged. Amazon’s announcement gives the new tier and its features; Stuff’s March 13 report reported the prior rate and effective date.
Amazon’s current U.S. explainer lists Prime membership at $14.99 per month or $139 per year, separate from the Ultra add-on. The add-on requires Prime or a Prime Video subscription and is currently available only in the U.S. Amazon’s Prime Video explainer distinguishes membership from the video subscription options.
Prime Video also includes titles with Prime, while other titles may be available only to rent or buy, and add-on subscriptions can cost extra. The included catalog changes over time, according to Prime Video Help. Ultra is an optional ad-free upgrade, not a replacement for Prime membership or a blanket pass for every paid title or channel.

What Prime Video Ultra adds
Amazon’s current plan comparison shows that the included Prime Video benefit already has HD, HDR10, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision, up to four concurrent streams, and up to 50 downloads. Ultra adds ad-free viewing, UHD/4K, Dolby Atmos, up to five concurrent streams, and up to 100 downloads.
| Feature | Prime Video benefit included with Prime | Prime Video Ultra |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly add-on cost | Included with Prime membership | $4.99 per month |
| Ads | Ads may appear | Ad-free viewing, with exceptions |
| Video and audio formats | HD, HDR10, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision | UHD/4K and Dolby Atmos, as well as the formats available with the included benefit |
| Concurrent streams | Up to 4 | Up to 5 |
| Offline downloads | Up to 50 | Up to 100 |
“Ad-free” has limits: Amazon says live TV, events such as sports, and some ad-supported content and subscriptions may still include ads. Audio and video formats depend on the title, the device’s capabilities, and internet bandwidth; limits may also vary by title, device, and provider. A subscription alone therefore does not guarantee that every title will play in a premium format.

How much does Ultra cost?
The monthly plan is $4.99. Amazon also lists an annual Ultra plan for $45.99 for customers with an annual Prime membership, describing it as 23% less than paying monthly for Ultra. The annual price is a separate add-on cost, not the annual Prime membership fee. Check the plan terms in Amazon’s current Ultra details before subscribing.
Amazon says its rationale is that “Delivering ad-free streaming with premium features requires significant investment, and this structure aligns with other major streaming services while ensuring customers have the flexibility to choose how they want to watch.” That is Amazon’s explanation for the pricing structure, not independent evidence about its costs.

When the extra cost may make sense
Consider Ultra if you want fewer interruptions
If you regularly watch Prime Video and prefer not to see ads in the eligible on-demand programming, the ad-free benefit may be the main reason to pay. Remember that the exceptions for live TV, sports events, and some content or subscriptions still apply.
Consider it if you can use the premium formats
Ultra’s 4K/UHD and Dolby Atmos support may matter if you watch titles offered in those formats on compatible devices and have enough bandwidth. Amazon says availability depends on the title, device, and connection. The upgrade does not by itself establish that you need to buy new hardware.

- Getting set up is easy – Plug in and connect to Wi-Fi for smooth streaming.
Consider it if the limits are a real constraint
Five simultaneous streams rather than four, and 100 downloads rather than 50, may help a household that often hits the included limits. If you rarely stream on multiple devices or download titles, those higher caps may have little practical value.
When to stay with the included benefit
- You are comfortable with ads and do not need Ultra’s eligible ad-free viewing.
- Your devices or the titles you watch do not support, or you do not care about, UHD/4K or Dolby Atmos.
- Four concurrent streams and 50 downloads are enough for your use.
- You want to keep the recurring add-on cost rather than pay for features you may seldom use.
Amazon’s current comparison shows the included benefit has HD, HDR10, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision, so it is not simply a basic HD-only option. The decision is about the added features and limits that matter to you, not a claim that every Prime Video viewer must upgrade.
