The Irish Club of WA’s members voted to sell its long-time Subiaco premises in September 2024, citing rising maintenance costs and dwindling membership. The property later sold for $1.5 million on 22 September 2025, according to REIWA. The sale records the building’s change of ownership; it does not establish that the club closed or that redevelopment has been approved.
Why did the Irish Club of WA put its Subiaco premises up for sale?
Members decided at the club’s annual general meeting on 15 September 2024 to put the premises at 61 Townshend Road on the market. Club president Alan O’Meara attributed the decision to the cost of maintaining a large building and declining membership. At the time, the committee was looking for alternative premises, but a destination had not been identified. PerthNow reported the decision on 6 November 2024.
How much did the property sell for?
REIWA records a sale price of $1.5 million on 22 September 2025. That is the recorded sale outcome, not the earlier asking price: PerthNow reported in July 2025 that Ray White Commercial was seeking $2 million while the building was leased to the Irish Club. REIWA’s listing records the sale, while PerthNow’s July 2025 report covered the earlier asking figure.
What was the building like?
The venue was a substantial function and entertainment property, rather than simply a bar. The 2024 report described a two-storey building with a commercial kitchen, bars on both levels, a stage and a function hall, with capacity for up to 400 people. REIWA’s later listing describes 608 square metres of land and approximately 800 square metres of building area, with a 400-capacity club licence. It also lists a ballroom or hall, stage, green room, lighting equipment, commercial kitchen, two bars, dining rooms, a boardroom and offices. These are reported listing features and measurements, not an independent building survey. PerthNow’s 2024 report and REIWA’s listing describe the premises.

What development was possible, and what is confirmed?
The 2024 report advertised potential development up to four storeys. REIWA’s listing gives the property Centre zoning, a 3:1 plot ratio and a four-storey height limit. These parameters describe reported planning and marketing details; they do not show that a specific redevelopment proposal was approved or that construction has taken place.
REIWA presented possible uses including continued operation as a club, office, association, recreation venue, place of worship or function centre, as well as redevelopment. Those were potential uses in a commercial listing, not confirmed plans for the site after its sale.

How long had the club been at Townshend Road?
The Irish Club of WA formed in 1950 to promote Irish national and cultural life in Perth. PerthNow reported that it had occupied its Townshend Road headquarters since 1978. The State Heritage Office of Western Australia’s inHerit inventory record traces the site further back: it was known as the Subiaco Club from about 1907, later operated as a reception centre called Fantasia Lodge, and was purchased by the Irish Club in 1976. The inventory says Bishop Healey opened it as the Irish Club on 18 November 1978.

The sale of the building does not by itself establish that the organization shut down. The sources reporting the 2024 decision say the committee was seeking alternative premises, and the REIWA listing records the property’s sale and vacant possession without documenting the club’s later arrangements. The sources cited here do not confirm where the club relocated or whether it continues to operate at another venue.
