Student Loan Apps: How to Apply and Compare Federal and Private Loans in 2026

No current 16-app ranking is verified. U.S. students should start with FAFSA and school financial aid, then compare private loan offers carefully if a funding gap remains.

There is no verified, current list of 16 “best student loan apps” to recommend here. “Loan app” could mean a mobile app or simply an online application, and available evidence does not establish 16 current lenders, app features, rates, or a ranking method. For U.S. students seeking education loans, the practical starting point is the federal student-aid process; consider private loans only if a funding gap remains.

What “student loan app” can mean

A student may use “loan app” to mean either software on a phone or the application process for borrowing. Those are not interchangeable: a lender’s digital application is not necessarily a separate mobile app, and a budgeting or loan-calculator app is not a lender. Without current product checks, naming 16 services as the “best” would imply a comparison that has not been established.

This guide covers U.S. education financing. FAFSA and federal loan rules described here do not apply to students borrowing in other countries. It also does not rank lenders or verify current app availability, rates, or terms.

Start with the federal student-aid route

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) says federal student loans are generally the first loan option to review because they usually have fixed interest rates and more borrower protections than private loans. Its guidance describes a narrower possible case in which some graduate or professional students may consider private borrowing, but that does not make private loans a default substitute for federal aid.

Federal student loans are accessed through the FAFSA and the school’s financial-aid process—not by choosing a standalone lender app. The school provides an aid offer and instructions for accepting or declining aid. Before federal loan funds are disbursed, students complete entrance counseling and sign a Master Promissory Note, according to CFPB guidance.

Check eligibility and enrollment requirements

Eligibility depends on federal requirements and the student’s circumstances. The 2024–2025 Federal Student Aid Handbook states that Direct Loan eligibility requires at least half-time enrollment at a participating school and satisfaction of general federal student-aid eligibility requirements. That is a year-specific reference, not confirmation of requirements for every later academic year; check current Federal Student Aid and school guidance before relying on it.

Ask the school about the remaining funding gap

Before borrowing privately, ask the financial-aid office how the aid offer relates to the school’s cost of attendance and whether other aid or payment arrangements are available. A school may need to certify that additional aid is required to cover cost of attendance for a private loan.

If federal aid is not enough, compare private loans carefully

Private student loans are applied for directly with lenders. CFPB guidance recommends requesting quotes from at least three private providers rather than accepting the first offer. A quoted rate or advertised minimum is not necessarily the rate a particular student will receive; a minimum may be available only to highly creditworthy borrowers.

Compare offers using the same loan amount and repayment period. Look beyond the monthly payment: a longer repayment term can lower the payment while increasing the total amount repaid. A variable interest rate can change, so payments or overall cost may rise.

What to compare What to check
Loan type and eligibility Who may borrow, whether a co-signer is required, and whether the lender’s terms fit the student’s enrollment and school.
Interest rate and APR Whether the rate is fixed or variable, the APR offered to this borrower, and whether the quoted rate is conditional on credit or other requirements.
Total cost Estimated total repayment for the same loan amount and term, plus origination or other fees.
Interest while in school When interest begins accruing and whether the borrower must make payments while enrolled.
Repayment terms The repayment period, payment schedule, and any flexibility if the borrower encounters financial difficulty.
Co-signer obligations Whether the co-signer is legally responsible for repayment and whether the lender offers a co-signer release, including its conditions.
Federal protections at risk Whether taking the private loan—or refinancing existing federal debt into a private loan—would mean giving up federal repayment or forgiveness options.

Apply in the right order

  1. Complete the FAFSA. Use the federal student-aid application and follow the school’s financial-aid instructions.
  2. Review the school’s aid offer. Ask the financial-aid office about the cost of attendance, available aid, and any remaining amount that needs to be covered.
  3. Complete federal loan requirements. If accepting a federal loan, complete entrance counseling and sign the Master Promissory Note before disbursement, as required by the process described by the CFPB.
  4. Shop private offers only for a remaining gap. Apply directly with lenders and seek quotes from at least three providers. Compare the terms using the same amount and repayment period.
  5. Read final disclosures before accepting. Confirm the actual rate, fees, payment obligations, repayment term, and co-signer responsibility in the offer—not just a headline rate or an app’s promotional language.

Understand co-signers and repayment risk

Many private loans require a co-signer unless the student has a positive credit history. A co-signer is legally responsible if the borrower does not pay, so both people should review the loan terms and understand the obligation before signing. Check whether a co-signer release is available and what requirements apply; do not assume release is automatic.

Federal and private loans can differ significantly if repayment becomes difficult. CFPB guidance notes that federal loans offer income-driven repayment options, while private lenders are not required to provide the same payment relief. Contact the loan servicer or lender promptly if payments become unaffordable, and verify options for the specific loan.

Be cautious about refinancing federal loans

Refinancing federal student loans with a private lender can cause the borrower to lose federal protections and options, including federal repayment or forgiveness programs. Compare that potential loss against any private refinancing terms before proceeding; a lower quoted rate alone does not capture the full trade-off.

  • The CFPB’s “How do I apply for student loans?” page was reviewed May 14, 2024, and modified May 28, 2024. It describes FAFSA, direct applications to private lenders, and shopping among providers; it is not evidence of current lender products.
