STRK Jumps 19.2% as Starknet Considers an L1 Transition for 2027

STRK’s reported 19.2% 24-hour rise followed Starknet’s statement that it is considering an L1 transition for its 2027 quantum-resistance goal. The network remains an Ethereum L2, and no migration plan has been finalized.

STRK rose a reported 19.2% in 24 hours after Starknet said it was actively considering becoming a Layer 1 blockchain, with a stated 2027 target for quantum resistance. The proposal is not a confirmed migration: Starknet’s official FAQ still describes the network as an Ethereum Layer 2 validity rollup.

What happened to STRK?

The Crypto Times reported STRK up 19.2% over 24 hours to $0.05871, citing CoinGecko data captured October 8, 2026, at 19:15 UTC. That is the timestamped snapshot behind headlines rounding the gain to 20%; it is not a live quote. The same snapshot put the 24-hour trading range at $0.04831–$0.06222, market capitalization at $429.534 million, fully diluted valuation at $578.735 million, and 24-hour trading volume at $229.46 million. CoinGecko’s reported circulating supply was 7.422 billion STRK, against total and maximum supplies of 10 billion. The Crypto Times’ report attributes these market figures to CoinGecko.

The timing followed Starknet’s October 8 statement, reproduced by The Crypto Times: “We are actively considering becoming an L1. This would enable Starknet to become the first fully quantum-resistant network, with 2027 as our target.” The reported price rise came after the statement, but that sequence alone does not establish that the post was the sole cause of the move.

Did Starknet decide to become an L1?

No. “Actively considering” describes an option under evaluation, not a finalized decision. The cited reports do not lay out a detailed migration plan, implementation schedule, or settled technical and governance choices. Starknet’s official FAQ continues to identify it as a permissionless, decentralized Ethereum Layer 2 validity rollup.

  • Genuine Check: confirm your signer is authentic during setup with the Ledger Wallet app.
  • Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.

That distinction matters for STRK holders: an announcement of a possible direction is not evidence that the network has changed, that a transition will happen, or that the token’s price will continue rising. The market snapshot describes a past move, not a forecast or investment recommendation.

Why is Starknet considering an L1 transition?

The stated rationale is to gain more control over security upgrades in pursuit of the project’s quantum-resistance goal. Crypto Briefing reported that StarkWare co-founder and CEO Eli Ben-Sasson raised the question of whether becoming an L1 could improve post-quantum agility. His October 8 post posed it this way: “Starknet becoming an L1 for post-quantum agility: good idea or bad idea?” Crypto Briefing’s account connects the proposal to control over upgrade timing.

The 2027 date and the ambition to become the “first fully quantum-resistant network” are Starknet’s stated target and claim, not an independently verified result or forecast. The cited sources do not quantify when quantum computing could threaten current cryptography or how likely a break would be.

What the post-quantum argument does—and does not—establish

The Crypto Times summarized StarkWare’s June 30 post-quantum roadmap as describing Starknet’s STARK proofs as relying on collision-resistant hash functions rather than elliptic-curve arithmetic, and discussed cryptographic agility and account abstraction. Those design points do not establish that every component of the network, or every application, wallet, and account using it, is already quantum-resistant. The proposal concerns a possible path toward the project’s goal, not proof that the goal has been achieved.

What would change if Starknet moved from L2 to L1?

Starknet’s present arrangement uses Ethereum for settlement and data availability, according to its FAQ. An L1 transition could give the project greater control over upgrade timing, which is part of the stated security rationale, but it would also change the network’s current role and raise technical and governance questions that the public reports have not answered.

Question Current L2 arrangement Possible L1 direction
Settlement and data availability Starknet says it uses Ethereum for both. Not specified in the cited reports.
Security-upgrade control The cited sources do not detail how upgrade timing is controlled today. Greater control over upgrade timing is the rationale reported for considering the move; no implementation plan is given.
Network strategy The official roadmap describes an Ethereum- and Bitcoin-oriented L2 direction alongside decentralization work. The sources do not explain how a transition would affect that roadmap.
Decision status Starknet’s FAQ describes it as an Ethereum L2 validity rollup. Under consideration; no finalized transition or plan is reported.

These are open trade-offs, not a comparison of two finalized designs. The available material does not establish which L1 architecture Starknet would use or how responsibilities now associated with Ethereum would be handled.

How does the L1 discussion fit Starknet’s broader roadmap?

Starknet’s decentralization roadmap describes a direction in which the network serves as an L2 for both Ethereum and Bitcoin while pursuing decentralization. It discusses additional validator responsibilities, a distributed sequencer layer, work on the S-two proving service, and Cairo Native. These are roadmap plans and implementation directions, not evidence that every component is complete.

The roadmap also lists Bitcoin-related integrations and products, including Lightning Network payments with Braavos wallet, Xverse wallet integration, Atomiq cross-chain conversion, and a federated Runes bridge. That context shows the breadth of the project’s stated strategy, but the cited sources do not identify those plans as the reason STRK rose on October 8.

What does STRK do on the network?

Starknet’s FAQ lists transaction fees, governance, and staking within a proof-of-stake model as STRK’s roles. Those are descriptions of network functions; they do not establish a future token price or make the reported market move evidence of an investment thesis.

What recent network development was reported?

Starknet Community Forum prerelease notes dated September 9, 2026, described v0.14.4 and support under SNIP-36 for proofs of qualifying block-sized virtual OS transactions. The notes listed an October 5 mainnet upgrade as planned and subject to governance approval; The Crypto Times later reported the release as live. This release context is separate from the L1 proposal.

The prerelease notes said large proofs could take up to 1–2 minutes, compared with a typical 3–5 seconds for the small-proof flow. They also said updated pricing weights were expected to affect the pricing of less than 1% of the vast majority of transactions, based on three months of mainnet traffic. These are details from the v0.14.4 prerelease notes, not measurements of an L1 transition.
