You can learn many subjects without paying for a course. Start with free lessons or university course materials, make a simple study plan, and build in practice. Just distinguish free learning resources from an enrolled course: they may not include an instructor, support, credit, or a recognized certificate.

Choose a free resource that fits what you want to learn

Pick one subject or skill and define a concrete outcome—for example, solving a type of math problem or understanding a particular topic. Then compare resources by subject coverage, built-in structure and practice, feedback or interaction, and whether you need a formal credential.

Resource Cost and access What you can use Limits
MIT OpenCourseWare Free public access; no registration or enrollment required. Course syllabi, notes, reading lists, assignments, exams, and, in some courses, video lectures and textbooks. Materials are self-guided and do not provide credit or certification.
MIT Open Learning Library Selected learning experiences are available free. Interactive content, auto-graded assessments, and progress tracking. No live support, discussion forums, or certificates.
Khan Academy Its cited help page describes its learning materials as free. Videos, articles, lessons, and practice questions. The cited page establishes access to learning content, not a formal credential. Its help article was updated in 2021, so check current terms.

For the direct question “Does it cost money to use Khan Academy?” its cited help article says its videos, articles, lessons, and practice questions are free. For university course materials, MIT OpenCourseWare publishes materials from more than 2,500 MIT courses, according to MIT’s About page accessed October 8, 2026. Those are materials to study, not enrollment in an MIT course.

Turn free materials into a workable study plan

  1. Set a specific goal. Decide what you want to be able to explain, solve, or make by the end of your study period.
  2. Use a syllabus to order topics. Browse an MIT OpenCourseWare course in your subject and use its syllabus as a sequence. MIT courses may include notes, reading lists, assignments, and exams; available materials vary by course.
  3. Study actively. Work through assignments or practice questions instead of relying on videos alone. Khan Academy provides lessons and practice, while some MIT materials include assignments and exams.
  4. Check for interactive feedback. If a relevant MIT Open Learning Library experience is available, its auto-graded assessments can help you check answers and track progress. That is automated feedback, not instruction or personal support.
  5. Find reading materials before buying. Some MIT courses include free online textbooks. MIT also recommends asking a local library about free copies; availability depends on the library’s collection and your location.
  6. Make a repeatable routine. Choose a manageable amount of study time, follow the sequence, and use practice results to decide what to revisit. This combines the formats these platforms describe; it is a practical approach, not a guarantee of results.

Know what free learning resources do not promise

Free access to materials does not automatically give you the structure or recognition of a paid or enrolled program. MIT OpenCourseWare does not award credit or certification. MIT Open Learning Library does not offer certificates, live support, or discussion forums. The Khan Academy page cited here describes free content, not a credential.

If you need formal credit, a certificate, a fixed schedule, or instructor support, verify that the specific program provides it before relying on it. Free resources can help you learn and practice, but do not assume they are equivalent to an accredited course or degree.
