Stoke Space, a Kent, Washington rocket company—not SpaceX—reportedly closed a $1 billion funding round at an approximate $10 billion valuation. Separately, people nearing retirement can see their investments gain value without those gains appearing as wages on their Social Security earnings record. The available reporting does not establish a specific financial event behind the phrase “richer on paper,” or connect that phrase to Stoke employees.
What Stoke Space reportedly raised—and what the valuation means
Hoodline reported on September 8, 2026, that Stoke Space closed a $1 billion Series E round at a valuation of roughly $10 billion. The report attributes most of its financial details to KSL.com and cites a person familiar with the matter for the valuation and the company’s total fundraising. These are reported figures, not independently confirmed first-party disclosures.
A funding round and a valuation are different things. The reported $1 billion is the amount of new investment in the round; the approximately $10 billion valuation is an estimate of the company’s worth used in connection with that financing. It is not evidence that the company, its workers, or its shareholders received $10 billion in cash. The report says Stoke had raised $2.3 billion in total since its founding, also attributed to a person familiar with the matter.
The report names Point72 Ventures and Spark Capital as leads of the Series E. It says the funding would advance Nova Pathfinder, a smaller rocket in development, and help finance the larger Nova Block 2. It does not establish what equity individual employees hold, whether any employee shares can be sold, or whether workers have realized gains.

What Stoke is developing
Founded in 2019 by former Blue Origin engineers Andy Lapsa and Tom Feldman, Stoke is pursuing fully reusable rockets: designs intended to reuse both the first stage and the upper stage. For the upper stage, the company’s approach uses an actively cooled metallic heat shield that circulates liquid hydrogen during re-entry. That describes a design goal, not proof of operational reuse or flight-tested performance.
Reported Nova schedules and payload estimates

| Vehicle | Reported first-flight timing | Reusable configuration payload estimate | Expendable configuration payload estimate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nova Pathfinder | Debut planned for 2027 | 3 metric tons to low Earth orbit | Up to 7 metric tons |
| Nova Block 2 | First launch expected in 2029 | Up to 15 metric tons | About 23 metric tons |
Reusable and expendable figures describe different configurations, so they should not be read as interchangeable capacities. The same Hoodline report says Pathfinder’s mission manifest was fully booked for the next couple of years, based on its cited KSL.com reporting; that is a reported booking status, not a record of completed launches.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) defines covered earnings as wages and net income from self-employment that are covered by Social Security. A rise in the market value of investments may increase a person’s wealth on paper, but that increase is not thereby recorded as wages or covered self-employment income.

The SSA’s explanation of covered income says that “Pension payments, annuities, and the interest or dividends from your savings and investments are not earnings for Social Security purposes.” In an FAQ dated October 7, 2022, addressing whether IRA withdrawals affect benefits, the agency says that pension payments, annuities, and interest or dividends from savings and investments “do not lower your Social Security retirement benefits.”
| Income or financial item | How the SSA guidance treats it |
|---|---|
| Wages | Count as covered earnings when covered by Social Security. |
| Net self-employment income | Counts as covered earnings when covered by Social Security. |
| Interest and dividends from savings and investments | Not earnings for Social Security purposes, according to the SSA. |
| Pension payments and annuities | Not earnings for Social Security purposes; the cited SSA FAQ says they do not lower retirement benefits. |
This distinction concerns the Social Security earnings record and the cited retirement-benefit guidance. It does not mean every retirement-related transaction is treated identically, or that investment income is automatically tax-free. The SSA FAQ specifically discusses IRA withdrawals in its question and names pensions, annuities, interest, and dividends in its answer. For an individual tax or benefit question, consult current SSA and tax guidance.

What the two stories do—and do not—show
- Stoke’s reported valuation is a private-company financing estimate, not proof that workers received cash or can sell company shares.
- Investment appreciation can make an individual wealthier on paper without becoming wages on that person’s Social Security earnings record.
- The SSA’s treatment of covered earnings is distinct from the company valuation story; the reporting does not establish a connection between Stoke’s funding and any particular worker’s retirement finances.
