Steve McQueen’s net worth when he died in 1980 is not established by a reliable public estate accounting in the sources available. The often-repeated question “How much was Steve McQueen worth when he died?” therefore has no substantiated single-dollar answer. The figures that can be traced refer to different things: a 1962 accountant’s projection, later estimates of posthumous earnings, and prices paid for individual collectibles.
Was Steve McQueen’s net worth at death ever established?
Not by the available sources. Net worth at death would mean the value of McQueen’s assets minus his liabilities at a particular date in 1980. The sources here do not provide a final estate valuation or a public accounting with which to calculate that balance.

Online estimates that give a precise death-time figure should be treated as unverified unless they can be tied to a documented estate accounting. The figures below cannot be combined into a reliable range: they cover different dates and measures.
What figures are documented, and what do they measure?
| Figure | Date or period | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| $172,000 | 1962 | An accountant’s projection reported by Christopher Sandford in Bright Lights Film Journal in 2022—not a 1980 estate valuation. Source |
| $8 million | 2012 ranking, published in 2013 | McQueen’s posthumous earnings figure in Forbes’ dead-celebrities ranking—not his net worth at death. Source |
| $9 million | 2015 ranking | A posthumous earnings figure in Forbes’ ranking, not an estate balance sheet. Source |
| $9 million | 2016 ranking, published in 2017 | A posthumous earnings figure in Forbes’ ranking. Forbes cited historical deals involving TAG Heuer, Porsche, Persol and Barbour; the amount does not show McQueen’s assets or debts at death. Source |
| $6 million | 2006 earnings, as described in 2011 | Inman reported that Forbes placed McQueen tenth among top-earning dead celebrities in 2007, with licensing of his name earning $6 million in the prior year. This is a secondhand account of a ranking-period earnings figure, not a death-time valuation. Source |
| $3.4 million hammer; $3.74 million including buyer fees | 2020 | The sale price of the 1968 Bullitt Mustang, reported by the Los Angeles Times. It is the price of one car in a later collector transaction, not the value of McQueen’s estate. Source |
What does the 1962 estimate tell us?
Christopher Sandford’s 2022 Bright Lights Film Journal article reports that an accountant projected McQueen’s total net worth at $172,000 in 1962. Sandford describes the projection as including $66,500 in bank, two houses and various investments, and says it came from a June 1962 letter in the Steve McQueen Archive at the Margaret Herrick Library. This is a retrospective report of archival material, not an independently inspected final estate record. Read Sandford’s account.

#1 Best Overall
That dated snapshot can indicate what an accountant projected early in McQueen’s career. It cannot establish his wealth roughly 18 years later. Without documented changes in assets, liabilities and valuation methods, it should not be inflated, compounded or presented as a 1980 figure.
Why Forbes’ posthumous figures are not net worth
Forbes’ dead-celebrities rankings report earnings attributed to a celebrity’s estate or rights holders over a ranking period. They are not a balance sheet of assets minus liabilities at the time of death. McQueen’s $8 million figure in the 2012 ranking and $9 million figures in the 2015 and 2016 rankings describe later earnings, not the value of what he owned in 1980.
Rank #2
Licensing can generate income after a person dies, but a ranking-period earnings figure does not, by itself, reveal how much an estate received, what costs or obligations applied, or how assets and liabilities stood at death.

The 1984 estate auction
Steve McQueen Online says saleable estate assets were auctioned over two days at Las Vegas’ Imperial Palace in 1984. Its catalogue page describes the sale but gives no overall estate valuation, proceeds total, probate value, tax burden or distribution to heirs. See the estate-auction page.
The Bullitt Mustang’s later sale
The 1968 Mustang associated with Bullitt sold in 2020 for $3.4 million at hammer, or $3.74 million including buyer fees, according to the Los Angeles Times. That price belongs to a single collector-car transaction decades after McQueen’s death. Provenance, condition, buyer fees and collector demand affect a collectible’s sale price; it does not establish the actor’s net worth in 1980. Read the sale report.

How to judge claims about McQueen’s wealth
- Check the date. A 1962 projection, a 2015 earnings ranking and a 2020 car auction are not interchangeable snapshots.
- Check the measure. Net worth requires assets and liabilities; annual posthumous earnings and a collectible’s sale price measure something else.
- Check the source and accounting. A precise death-time claim needs a traceable estate accounting, not repetition across websites.
- Keep prices distinct. The Bullitt Mustang’s hammer price excludes buyer fees; its fee-inclusive amount is a different total.
