Some Steam games could become more expensive in some markets, but Valve’s updated regional price guide does not raise prices automatically. Steam gives developers three ways to calculate regional price recommendations; each developer decides whether to use them, change a suggested price, or leave a game’s current price alone. The current guide says its public-data basis is January 2026.
Are Steam games getting more expensive outside the US?
Possibly, for some games and regions. A developer reviewing Steam’s updated guidance may choose to raise a regional price, but other developers may keep prices unchanged or set them lower. The guide is not a forecast of what every game will cost, and it does not establish a uniform increase for any country.

Steam’s documentation says developers choose the prices they enter for each currency and region group. The conversion methods are recommendations to inform that decision, not a platform-wide price change. Without comparing a particular game’s old and new prices, there is no supported percentage increase to quote.
What is Steam’s regional pricing guide?
Steamworks’ regional pricing explorer shows three approaches developers can use to consider prices across Steam’s supported currencies and region groups. Valve says the methods use public data as of January 2026. Steam’s documentation describes support for 37 currencies and four region groups; those figures describe the platform’s stated scope, not a promise that every game is sold in every currency or group.

| Method | What it considers |
|---|---|
| Exchange-rate conversion | Currency exchange rates. |
| Purchasing-power conversion | Public data about purchasing power in a country or region. |
| Multi-variable conversion | Local purchasing power, expected prices of comparable entertainment goods, and exchange rates. |
The explorer illustrates how the methods work; it is not a mechanism that automatically rewrites customer-facing store prices. Valve does not state in the cited material when the data will next be refreshed, so January 2026 is the documented reference date—not a schedule for future updates.
Who decides a game’s final regional price?
The developer does. Steam says, “The prices you enter for your game in each currency and region group are up to you.” A developer can choose one conversion method, combine guidance with its own market research, adjust a suggested amount, or retain an existing price. As a result, the effect can differ by both game and market.

That distinction matters when interpreting a headline about prices potentially surging: a changed recommendation may influence a developer, but it is not itself a price increase. Valve’s pricing documentation describes the methods as tools to help developers make informed decisions and choose what fits their goals.
How are price changes published, and what restrictions apply?
Steam says proposed price changes are reviewed rather than scheduled to occur automatically. After review, the developer can publish the changes at a chosen time or have Valve publish them immediately. A price increase in any currency triggers a 30-day cooldown on submitting discounts, according to Steam’s pricing documentation.

The same documentation says developers should wait until 30 days after a game’s release before changing its price, with exceptions for correcting major errors. Developers should check the live policy for the current rule and any applicable exceptions.
How does this compare with Steam’s earlier regional currency change?
In 2023, Valve announced that Argentina and Turkey would move to USD-denominated regional prices, alongside LATAM-USD and MENA-USD price regions. Valve said prices could rise in some places and fall in others depending on how developers had priced games before the change. That history shows regional system changes can have varied effects; it does not predict the impact of the 2026 conversion methods. See Valve’s announcement about USD pricing for Argentina and Turkey.

Can you change your Steam country to get cheaper games?
Changing your store country to evade regional pricing or content restrictions is not a legitimate workaround. Steam Support says attempts to bypass those restrictions by using another region are forbidden. Purchases should reflect the applicable store country; consult Steam’s Steam Store Country guidance for the rules that apply to your account.
