Steam Machine Price Leak: Retailer Listing Tops $1,000, but Later U.S. Prices Differ

A Czech retailer’s concealed listing data, reported in January 2026, suggested a Steam Machine price above $1,000 before tax for a higher-storage model. That was preliminary retailer pricing—not a Valve price announcement—and the report warned it could include the retailer’s markup. Later reporting in June gave U.S. prices of $1,049 for 512GB and $1,349 for 2TB, while also revealing a storage-capacity mismatch with the early listing.

What the January retailer listing reportedly showed

On January 10, 2026, Tom’s Hardware reported that hidden listing data at Czech retailer Smarty indicated prices of about $950 before tax for a 512GB Steam Machine and about $1,070 before tax for a purported 1TB model. The figures were not shown as ordinary public listing prices, and the report cautioned that Smarty’s pricing could include a markup. They were not confirmed Valve U.S. prices or an official MSRP. Read Tom’s Hardware’s January report.

How the leak compares with later reported U.S. prices

In June 2026, after Valve’s announcement, Ars Technica reported U.S. prices that put both configurations above $1,000. These are later reported U.S. prices, not a direct like-for-like comparison with Smarty’s earlier pre-tax conversions: the retailer, tax treatment, and storage label differ.

Configuration reported Reported price Controller bundle
512GB $1,049 U.S. price, reported June 22, 2026 by Ars Technica Steam Controller reported as an additional $79
2TB $1,349 U.S. price, reported June 22, 2026 by Ars Technica Steam Controller reported as an additional $79

Ars Technica also reported a custom six-core AMD Zen 4 processor, AMD RDNA 3 graphics, 16GB of DDR5 system memory, and 8GB of dedicated graphics memory. Those are reported specifications, not independent performance-test results. Read Ars Technica’s June report.

Why the storage discrepancy matters

The January Smarty report described its higher-priced listing as a 1TB model; the June pricing report described the higher-capacity U.S. model as 2TB. The available reporting does not establish that these are the same configuration or explain the difference. Treat the early 1TB figure as a description of the retailer’s purported listing, not as a reliable price for the later-reported 2TB model.

What to check before budgeting or ordering

For current product details and purchasing availability, check Valve’s official Steam Machine page. The June report’s shipment and reservation information was historical: it said first shipments were expected June 29, 2026, with reservations randomized because supply was constrained. That does not establish current stock or ordering status. Also account for any applicable tax and confirm whether the controller is included in the specific listing you are considering.
