STAX began in Perth in 2015, founded by Don Robertson and Matilda Murray. The founders built an activewear brand around inclusive sizing and everyday customers as models, then faced a pandemic-era cash crisis after a container of stock went missing at sea. Their rise is now a historical story: four STAX entities entered receivership on 24 June 2026, and the receivers say the online store is not accepting new orders.

How STAX started in Perth

Don Robertson and Matilda Murray founded STAX in Perth in 2015. In its early days, the business operated from the spare room at Robertson’s mother’s house in Canning Vale. A 2021 PerthNow profile later described the company as based in Sydney.

In later podcast listings, the founders’ story includes selling stock from a storage unit and growing from a small online operation toward a business with retail locations. Those listings offer a retrospective account, not audited company records.

Inclusive sizing shaped the brand’s identity

PerthNow reported that STAX offered sizes XXS–4XL and used everyday customers as models. Robertson told the publication that this approach was a source of pride. The founders linked it to the brand’s pandemic-era viral attention; that is their explanation, not proof that one factor alone drove the company’s growth.

Robertson also described the wider role of leggings in everyday clothing: “Activewear, particularly, leggings or tights have become what denim became in the 70s,” he said, as quoted by PerthNow.

The stock crisis behind “almost lost everything”

The near-collapse in the title refers to a container carrying STAX stock that was lost at sea during the pandemic. The founders told PerthNow they had emptied their bank accounts and were struggling to pay rent. The business later went viral, but the account does not establish the missing container as the sole cause of its subsequent success.

What the historical growth figures do—and do not—show

In the 2021 PerthNow report, the founders said STAX had grown 1,600–2,000 per cent over 18 months and that its latest collection release comprised 80,000 units. These were figures attributed to the founders, not described as audited results.

A 2025 Growth & Banter Podcast listing described STAX as having more than 160 staff and more than 10 retail locations. That is a dated publisher-reported snapshot, not a current headcount or store count. No current independently audited revenue, staffing, store-count or customer-count figure is established by the cited sources.

STAX entered receivership in June 2026

The receivers’ customer FAQ says four STAX entities entered receivership on 24 June 2026. The receivers took control of the business, closed the Pitt Street Westfield store and stopped the online store from accepting new orders while they assessed the business.

What customers are told

  • New orders: The online store is not accepting them.
  • Orders placed before the receivers’ appointment: Fulfilment is unlikely, according to the FAQ, because of outstanding supplier and freight liabilities.
  • Returns and exchanges: Delivered items cannot currently be returned or exchanged.
  • Gift cards and credit notes: They cannot currently be honoured.

These are the receivers’ stated current customer arrangements, not a guarantee about what may happen as the receivership proceeds. Readers should consult the FAQ for any changes before relying on an order, return or credit.

Matilda Murray Robertson’s account of the handover

In a first-person account published in September 2026, Matilda Murray Robertson said she learned of the receivers’ appointment on the morning it became public. She wrote that control of business decisions transferred to the receivers and that she was no longer involved in operations from that day. This is her personal account and perspective, rather than a neutral account of every event in the insolvency.
