Startup Spotlight: How Garmentory Brought Boutique Shopping Online

Founded in Seattle in 2013, Garmentory set out to connect shoppers with independent boutiques online. Its original sale-and-offer model and its broader current marketplace are distinct snapshots in the company’s story.

Garmentory began as a way to make boutique fashion easier to find online. In a 2014 interview, GeekWire described the Seattle startup’s original marketplace: shoppers browsed curated sale items, made an offer, and the boutique shipped the item if it accepted. The company’s current US site describes a broader curated marketplace, so the early offer-based model should be understood as a snapshot of its first years—not as a description of how the service works today.

What was Garmentory’s original idea?

GeekWire reported that Adele Tetangco, a boutique-fashion industry veteran, and Sunil Gowda, a developer who had worked at Microsoft, Expedia, and Zillow, founded Garmentory in Seattle in 2013. Gowda said they had worked together on a mobile application for an emerging fashion designer in 2009. That project helped them see how technology could support independent fashion businesses.

The founders wanted shoppers to discover clothing and accessories from small boutiques outside their own neighborhoods. In Gowda’s words at the time, “Garmentory aims to bring the curated selection and personal experience of brick-and-mortar boutique shopping to the world of e-commerce and help boutique fashion businesses thrive in a competitive industry.” GeekWire published the interview on October 15, 2014.

How did the early marketplace work?

The 2014 service focused on curated boutique sale inventory. A shopper could browse an item and make an offer; if the boutique accepted it, the boutique shipped the item. The arrangement was intended to help shops move unsold stock without a complicated setup. Gowda summarized the experience then as: “At Garmentory, you can shop sales from boutiques and designers from across the U.S. and Canada all in one place.”

That description belongs to the 2014 product, not necessarily the present-day buying process. The current US site presents one checkout and says independent designers or boutiques process orders while Garmentory’s team keeps shoppers informed. It does not establish that today’s orders use the original offer-and-acceptance workflow.

What did the 2014 profile report about funding?

Gowda told GeekWire that Garmentory had bootstrapped first, raised a small seed round through Founder’s Co-op, and was adding angel investment in Seattle. The story also reported that the company had been accepted into the Techstars Seattle 2014 class. These are historical details reported in that interview. A possible venture-capital raise the following year was described as a plan, not a completed financing event.

How does Garmentory describe itself now?

Garmentory’s live US About page describes a curated marketplace connecting independent designers and boutiques with shoppers. As accessed on October 8, 2026, the undated page claims more than 3,000 brands and more than 1,000 boutiques, and promotes one checkout. Those are the company’s own figures and positioning; the page gives no measurement date or independent validation.

Current US pages also offer routes to women’s, men’s, and kids’ clothing, home goods, and sale items, alongside ways to discover designers and boutiques. Garmentory describes The Loop as resale and displays a customer rewards feature. These current features should not be projected backward onto the startup’s 2014 launch.

The About page identifies Sunil Gowda as Founder + CEO. That present-day company description does not, by itself, settle every question about corporate history or legal continuity since the Seattle startup’s founding.

What does the India site establish?

Garmentory India describes itself as an India-facing global fashion platform and says featured products come directly from designers or authorized boutiques. Its site names Garmentory Retail Private Limited and gives a Bengaluru address. This establishes that an India-branded site is operating with those stated details; it does not by itself establish the ownership or corporate relationship between that entity and the 2014 Seattle startup. What the startup story tells readers

Garmentory’s early proposition was a digital bridge between shoppers and independent boutiques: broaden discovery beyond local stores and give boutiques another way to sell inventory. The 2014 interview captured a specific sale-and-offer workflow and an early financing snapshot. The current US site presents a wider marketplace, categories, and resale offering, but its undated company-reported figures should be read as claims on a live About page, not independently verified measures of scale.
