Possibly—but there is no confirmed Brampton production deal. Bloomberg reported on April 1, 2026, that Stellantis and its Chinese partner Leapmotor were discussing Canadian electric-vehicle production, with Stellantis’ idle Brampton Assembly plant as the focus. The report described discussions, not a finalized agreement. Later coverage said the plant remained idle and Stellantis had not announced a sale or manufacturing agreement.
What was reported about Stellantis and Leapmotor?
Bloomberg reported on April 1, 2026, that Stellantis was discussing Canadian EV production options with Zhejiang Leapmotor Technology, and that the discussions focused on the Brampton plant. The report cited people familiar with the matter; it did not identify a selected vehicle, a signed deal, or a production timetable. Bloomberg’s report is available here as an archived copy.
That distinction matters: a reported possibility is not a plant sale, lease, investment commitment, or promise to build vehicles. The available later reporting does not establish whether the earlier discussions are still active.
Why Leapmotor is a plausible partner—but not proof of a Brampton deal
Stellantis and Leapmotor already have a formal international partnership. In a May 14, 2024 announcement, Stellantis said Leapmotor International was formed as a Stellantis-led joint venture with a 51/49 ownership split and exclusive rights to export, sell, and manufacture Leapmotor products outside Greater China. Its initial international rollout was to include the T03 and C10. Stellantis’ announcement describes the arrangement.

The partnership makes overseas manufacturing a real part of the companies’ relationship, but it does not confirm Canadian production. In May 2026, the companies announced plans to deepen cooperation in Europe, including production plans in Zaragoza and future Leapmotor products at Villaverde. That announcement did not name Brampton or announce production in Canada. The European cooperation announcement is separate from the reported Canadian discussions.
What is known about Brampton’s status?
Connect CRE reported on September 1, 2026, that Brampton Assembly remained idle and Stellantis had not announced a sale. The plant had been idle since December 2023, according to that report. Connect CRE described the site as 2.95 million square feet on 269 acres; these are reported site details, not independently verified here against a company or government record. In a September 2, 2026 article, China-EV Canada quoted Stellantis spokesperson LouAnn Gosselin as saying, “Our focus remains on finding a sustainable manufacturing solution for Brampton Assembly.” This is a company statement as presented in secondary industry reporting, not an announcement of a chosen operator or product. China-EV Canada’s article provides the quotation.
Other interest in the site is not a confirmed alternative
Connect CRE reported inquiries from several parties. It said Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown told Bloomberg that BYD had inquired about bus production, and that Leapmotor International and other organizations had expressed interest in the site. China-EV Canada also reported the BYD inquiry. An inquiry about buses is distinct from a passenger-EV proposal, and neither inquiry establishes a transaction or selected use for the plant.

What still has to be confirmed
The public reporting available through September 2026 does not establish:
- A signed agreement between Stellantis and Leapmotor for Brampton.
- Which vehicle, if any, would be built there.
- The size of any investment or a production start date.
- Whether the work would involve full local manufacturing or final assembly using imported kits.
- A workforce plan, job commitment, or terms for recalling or hiring workers.
- A government approval specific to a Brampton project.
If a concrete proposal is announced, its significance will depend on those details: what product it covers, how much is made locally, who owns or operates the site, the investment and workforce commitments, and which markets the vehicles are intended to serve. The current sources do not provide enough confirmed information to rank the reported interests on those measures.
