But consolidated revenue still fell year over year, and the quarter’s margin improvement included effects that make it too early to call the recovery fully proven.
What Starbucks’ latest quarter shows
Starbucks reported its fiscal third-quarter results on July 29, 2026, for the 13 weeks ended June 28, 2026. Global comparable-store sales increased 7.9%, and U.S. comparable sales also rose 7.9%. The company’s Q3 FY2026 results describe the fourth consecutive quarter of positive global comparable sales.

A comparable-store measure tracks sales at stores open long enough to be included in the comparison, rather than all revenue across the business. The SEC filing breaks the global increase into 4.2% growth in comparable transactions and a 3.5% increase in average ticket. In other words, the gain reflected more transactions as well as more spending per transaction—not just customers paying more when they visited. The figures are from Starbucks’ Q3 FY2026 Form 10-Q.
Why revenue fell even as comparable sales rose
Consolidated net revenue was $9.323 billion, down 1.4% from $9.456 billion in Q3 FY2025. That does not directly contradict the comparable-sales increase: the two measures cover different things. Comparable sales measure performance at eligible existing stores, while consolidated revenue reflects the company’s reported business as a whole.

A significant complication this quarter was Starbucks’ conversion of its China retail operations to a licensed joint-venture model. The change reduced company-operated store revenue while increasing licensed-store and other revenue. Starbucks separately recorded a $536.3 million net gain from the divestiture. Consequently, the year-over-year revenue decline should not be read on its own as evidence that demand at comparable stores weakened; nor does the comparable-sales figure describe total-company revenue growth.
Margin improved, but the quality of that improvement matters
Operating income was $980.4 million, compared with $935.6 million a year earlier, and operating margin expanded by 60 basis points. Those results point to improvement in reported profitability, but the filing attributes the movement to a mix of operating changes and other effects.

- Product and distribution costs as a share of revenue fell, with effects including the China conversion and tariff refunds; mix shift partly offset the benefit.
- Store operating costs as a share of revenue fell. However, measured against company-operated revenue, those costs rose 30 basis points. Starbucks attributed the increase primarily to labor investment supporting Back to Starbucks and higher self-insured claims, partly offset by sales leverage.
- Restructuring and impairment costs increased, largely because of Starbucks Reserve and Roastery impairments and partner severance costs.
These details make the 60-basis-point expansion meaningful but not a simple read-through to durable, underlying cost improvement. The company’s filing describes factors that may not recur in the same way, alongside labor and other operating costs tied to its plans.
What Starbucks says is driving the turnaround
Starbucks calls its strategy “Back to Starbucks,” with stated priorities spanning coffee, customer experience and human connection, partner investment, store operations, marketing and menu, and Rewards. In the Q3 release, chairman and chief executive officer Brian Niccol said: “Our Back to Starbucks plan was built on the belief that an extraordinary cup of coffee, human connection and customer experience win the day, every day. Our third quarter results are proof they do.”

On the Q3 earnings call, Niccol also called it “the quarter our momentum became truly measurable.” The transcript describes Green Apron Service as giving partners time and tools to provide a more consistent experience, and Smart Queue as helping serve customers with more speed. These are management’s explanations of its initiatives, not independent evidence that any one program caused the sales gains.
How the latest results compare with management’s earlier claims
In the Q2 FY2026 release, Niccol described that quarter as “the turn in our turnaround.” CFO Cathy Smith said the company had been clear that top-line improvement would come first, with earnings growth to follow. That earlier framing provides context for the Q3 progression: the latest quarter combined strong comparable sales, higher operating income and margin expansion, while consolidated revenue remained lower year over year.

The figures make the sales improvement more measurable than a strategy statement alone. They do not establish that the turnaround is complete or that the same growth and margin pattern will continue. The revenue comparison is affected by the China business-model change, and the margin movement includes several cost and accounting-related factors identified by Starbucks.

For a customer wondering whether Starbucks is attracting more visits, the 4.2% increase in comparable transactions is the most direct evidence in this quarter’s figures, though it is a company-wide comparable-store measure rather than a count of unique customers. For someone assessing the company’s financial recovery, the right picture includes both that sales momentum and the revenue decline, plus the mixed factors behind improved operating margin.

Investors should also separate reported results from management’s interpretation of them. Starbucks’ statements about service initiatives and the turnaround plan explain what leadership believes is changing; they do not guarantee future revenue, earnings or share performance.
