That was more than half of the 1,100 corporate positions Starbucks announced it would cut. The figure describes the Washington impact of that specific event—not a running total of all Starbucks layoffs.
How many Starbucks workers in Washington were affected?
The Washington Employment Security Department filing, reported by GeekWire on February 27, 2025, listed 612 workers affected by Starbucks’ February 2025 cuts. Starbucks had announced 1,100 corporate position reductions company-wide. The two figures have different scopes: 612 is the Washington filing count, while 1,100 is the company’s announced corporate-position reduction. GeekWire’s report
Were Starbucks baristas or other store employees affected?
No. GeekWire reported that the February 2025 cuts did not affect in-store employees. Starbucks employed approximately 16,000 people in corporate roles, a group that also included workers in roasting, manufacturing, warehousing, and distribution; those operational workers were not included in these cuts. The approximately 16,000 figure was not the number of people at risk.
Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol described the plan as “removing layers and duplication and creating smaller, more nimble teams.”

Why 612 is not a current total for Washington
Later reporting describes additional Starbucks job cuts, so the February 2025 count should not be treated as the cumulative total through 2026. Washington’s May 2026 economic report lists later Seattle Starbucks layoff entries of 61 and 252 workers. Separately, The Associated Press reported on May 15, 2026 that Starbucks was laying off 300 U.S. corporate employees, with coffeehouse employees not affected. These later entries and announcements should be reported separately rather than added to 612: the available reporting does not establish that the worker counts are distinct and non-overlapping. A verified, de-duplicated cumulative total for Starbucks layoffs in Washington through October 8, 2026 is not established by these reports.

What a Washington WARN notice means
Washington’s Employment Security Department says the state WARN law applies to some worksite closures, mass layoffs, and reductions in hours; not every event meets the law’s criteria. For qualifying events, the guidance describes written notice 60 days in advance to the state, affected employees, and the chief elected official of the relevant community.
