Stanford’s $140 Million Budget Reduction and Staff Layoffs: What Changed

Stanford announced a $140 million reduction in university general funds allocated to operations for 2025–26, and staff reductions followed. The figure did not represent a cut to Stanford’s entire consolidated budget, and the university’s June 2025 announcement excluded the School of Medicine. As of June 2026, Stanford said it was not contemplating further cuts for FY2027 “at this time,” although a general-funds hiring freeze remained in place.

What does Stanford’s $140 million budget reduction cover?

In a June 26, 2025 message, President Jon Levin and Provost Jenny Martinez said Stanford would reduce the allocation of university general funds supporting operations by $140 million for 2025–26. They wrote: “These plans call for a $140 million reduction in the allocation of university general funds to support operations.” The announcement excluded the School of Medicine, which was to identify its reductions separately. This was not described as a $140 million cut to Stanford’s entire consolidated budget. Stanford’s June 26 announcement explains the scope.

Why is Stanford laying off staff?

Stanford attributed the budget pressure to federal policy changes affecting research support and an increase in the endowment tax. The university said some staff-position reductions would be necessary and that they could not all be achieved by eliminating vacant roles. Those are the university’s stated drivers; the available figures do not establish how much of the $140 million reduction was attributable to any one factor.

Stanford’s FY25 Annual Financial Report says the One Big Beautiful Bill Act increased the tax on Stanford’s net investment income from 1.4% to 8.0%, beginning in FY2027. That rate change is context for the university’s tax exposure, not a breakdown of the causes or cost of the 2025–26 reduction. Stanford FY25 Annual Financial Report

How many Stanford employees were laid off?

The Stanford Daily reported that Stanford had confirmed 363 layoffs as of August 6, 2025. That is a dated figure reported by the newspaper, not a layoff count stated in Stanford’s June or July messages. On July 31, Levin and Martinez confirmed that implementation had begun, writing: “Over the last few days, many schools and units at Stanford have made staff reductions.” The Stanford Daily’s August 6 report

Is Stanford still making budget cuts?

In a June 16, 2026 budget update, Stanford said it was not contemplating further cuts for FY2027 “at this time.” The statement was a time-bounded outlook, not a guarantee that budget pressure or staffing changes had ended. Stanford also said administrative and auxiliary unit staff headcount had declined 7.4% since August 2024, and that a hiring freeze continued for positions funded by general funds. The headcount figure concerns those units; it should not be read as a count of layoffs or a measure of all Stanford employees. Stanford’s FY27 budget update

What should affected employees know?

A general account of Stanford’s budget decision cannot establish an individual employee’s benefits, eligibility, or employment status. Stanford Administrative Guide policy 2.1.17 says permanent layoffs, temporary layoffs, and seasonal leave may occur for reasons including budget cuts, lack of work, reorganization, and changing university or department needs. Benefits and eligibility depend on the circumstances and applicable agreements. Employees should consult the current Administrative Guide policy 2.1.17 and contact Stanford HR for guidance specific to their situation.
