A separate plan to let clients use RLUSD as collateral for agreed LMAX products is still in development: the announcement gives no launch date or product list.
What Standard Chartered has launched—and what it has not
RLUSD custody is available to eligible institutional clients
In an announcement dated 12 October 2026, Standard Chartered said its DIFC Branch supports custody of RLUSD issued on the XRP Ledger for eligible institutional clients. The announcement says the branch is regulated by the Dubai Financial Services Authority. It does not set out eligibility criteria, supported client jurisdictions, or service terms. The LMAX collateral arrangement is planned work
Standard Chartered, Ripple and LMAX Group are working to make RLUSD eligible collateral for agreed LMAX products and extend Standard Chartered’s collateral-mirroring model to LMAX. The announcement describes this as work to be enabled, not a feature that is already live. It does not name the qualifying products or give an implementation date.

Under the parties’ description, RLUSD would remain in custody rather than being transferred directly to the trading venue. Its eligible collateral value would instead be mirrored to LMAX. The firms say this is expected to give clients more flexibility, reduce transfer-related operational risk, help optimise counterparty exposure and improve capital efficiency. Those are anticipated benefits, not reported or independently measured outcomes.

The announcement does not explain the detailed mechanics, custody controls, valuation process, or what happens if collateral eligibility changes. Those details should not be inferred from the phrase “collateral mirroring.”
How the announcement fits the earlier LMAX relationship
The October plan follows earlier institutional work between the firms, but the earlier announcements do not establish the precise scope or status of the new RLUSD arrangement.

- 15 January 2026: LMAX and Ripple announced a multi-year partnership to integrate RLUSD as a core collateral asset across LMAX institutional trading infrastructure. They discussed spot crypto, perpetual futures, CFD margin funding and settlement. Ripple said it would provide $150 million in financing for LMAX’s long-term cross-asset growth strategy. That financing was tied to the January partnership, not disclosed as funding for the October custody or collateral announcement. LMAX partnership announcement
- 1 July 2026: LMAX announced pilot prime-brokerage trades with Standard Chartered involving spot Bitcoin and Ether. The trades used T+1 settlement through Standard Chartered’s UK branch and custody settlement through its DIFC platform. LMAX CEO David Mercer said, “The lack of credit counterparties with robust balance sheets on the scale that we see in traditional finance has been a critical missing mechanism in the digital asset market to date.” His comment was made in the context of that July pilot, not as a statement of results from the October RLUSD plan. - 12 October 2026: Standard Chartered announced live RLUSD custody through DIFC and the planned collateral-mirroring work with Ripple and LMAX.
What RLUSD is—and how it differs from XRP
RLUSD is Ripple’s U.S. dollar-backed stablecoin. Ripple says it is issued by a New York trust supervised by the New York State Department of Financial Services (NYDFS), backed by cash, U.S. Treasuries and government money market funds, and supported by monthly independent attestations. Those are issuer statements; availability depends on jurisdiction. Ripple’s RLUSD information
RLUSD is not XRP. Ripple describes RLUSD as a dollar-backed stablecoin designed for price stability, while XRP is the XRP Ledger’s native cryptocurrency and has a market-set value. Ripple’s FAQ

What clients and observers still cannot determine
- When RLUSD will become eligible collateral for LMAX products.
- Which specific LMAX products and counterparties will be covered.
- Which client jurisdictions will be supported by the custody and collateral services.
- How the mirrored value will be calculated or operationally managed.
- Whether the model will produce measurable changes in risk, capital use or adoption.
Standard Chartered’s October announcement provides no usage statistics or outcome data for the new service. LMAX also reported $8.2 trillion in institutional exchange volumes for 2025 in its January 2026 partnership release; that is LMAX-reported exchange volume, not RLUSD trading or collateral volume.
