StackRox announced a $26.5 million funding round on September 10, 2020, led by Menlo Ventures. SecurityWeek reported that the financing brought the Kubernetes-security company’s total funding to $61 million. Less than six months later, Red Hat announced it would acquire StackRox; it completed the deal in February 2021.
What StackRox’s $26.5 million round included
The September 2020 round was led by Menlo Ventures, with Highland Capital Partners, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Sequoia Capital, and Redpoint Ventures participating. StackRox said it planned to use the money to accelerate growth, expand in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA), and increase research and development. SecurityWeek’s report on the round put cumulative funding at $61 million.
The same report said StackRox’s revenue had grown by more than 240% in the first half of 2020. That was a company-reported growth figure, not an independently audited result; it does not establish a specific revenue total, profitability, or valuation.
What StackRox’s security platform did
StackRox marketed a Kubernetes-native security platform for security and DevOps teams. Its focus extended beyond checking container images: it aimed to give organizations visibility across Kubernetes clusters and help them apply security and compliance policies to cluster configuration, workloads, and runtime activity.
#1 Best Overall
- Compact and Efficient Design: The FortiGate 40F is designed for small to mid-sized businesses and enterprise branch offices, featuring a compact, fanless desktop form factor that ensures quiet operation and minimizes space usage.
- Robust Connectivity Options: Equipped with 5 GE RJ45 ports, including 1 WAN port and 4 internal ports, this model provides essential connectivity and flexibility for various network configurations in a small-scale environment.
- High-Performance Security: Offers up to 1 Gbps IPS throughput and 600 Mbps threat protection throughput, using Fortinet’s purpose-built security processor technology to deliver industry-leading performance and protection for SSL encrypted traffic.
- Advanced Threat Protection: Integrated with Fortinet’s AI-powered FortiGuard Labs, the FortiGate 40F offers comprehensive cybersecurity, identifying and mitigating both known and unknown threats to maintain robust security across your network.
- Simplified Management and Deployment: Features a user-friendly management console that provides comprehensive network automation and visibility, coupled with Zero Touch Integration with Fortinet’s Security Fabric for easy deployment.
- Container security addresses risks in container images and registries, as well as the behavior of running containers.
- Kubernetes security also covers the orchestration layer: cluster configuration, access controls, policies, workloads, and the control plane.
- Cloud-native application security connects controls across the build, deployment, and runtime stages.
StackRox described capabilities including configuration management, runtime security, policy enforcement, investigation, and remediation, alongside integrations with application pipelines, registries, image-scanning systems, and CI/CD tools. Its strategic pitch was to build security around Kubernetes rather than treat it as a separate container-only layer. Red Hat later described StackRox as having shifted from broader enterprise security toward Kubernetes security in the years before its acquisition. Red Hat’s acquisition announcement outlined the product’s role and rationale.
Why Kubernetes-native security drew investment
By 2020, organizations were putting containers and Kubernetes into production, bringing new operational and security responsibilities. Teams had to coordinate controls across infrastructure, workloads, configuration, compliance, and runtime behavior, often while development, platform, and security responsibilities were divided across groups. That created a market case for tools designed to understand Kubernetes objects and policies rather than relying only on general-purpose host or container monitoring.

- HARDWARE PLUS SECURITY SERVICES: FortiGate-60F Firewall Appliance bundled with 1 year of FortiCare Premium and FortiGuard Unified Threat Protection.
- UNIFIED THREAT PROTECTION (UTP): Secures against advanced online threats with comprehensive web filtering and anti-botnet technologies.
- OPTIMIZED FOR MEDIUM-SIZED BUSINESSES: Tailored for businesses needing robust security without the infrastructure of larger enterprises.
- RELIABLE CUSTOMER SUPPORT: FortiCare Premium ensures high-quality support and service continuity.
- EFFECTIVE PROTECTION: Employs advanced filtering technologies to safeguard against sophisticated threats.
A Kubernetes-focused platform could consolidate visibility and connect controls across the software lifecycle, but it could also add another system to operate. Organizations still needed to tune policies, avoid duplicating capabilities already in cloud, registry, CI/CD, endpoint, or SIEM tools, and decide who owns alerts and remediation. “Full lifecycle” coverage is not a guarantee that one product resolves every security issue.
Why reported funding totals differ
The September 2020 funding report put StackRox’s cumulative investment at $61 million. Later SecurityWeek coverage of the acquisition described the company as having raised about $65 million. These are reported totals from different points in time, and the sources do not reconcile the difference; rounding, later financing, or different counting methods are possible but unconfirmed explanations. The later acquisition report gives the approximately $65 million figure.

Red Hat acquired StackRox in 2021
Red Hat announced its agreement to acquire StackRox on January 7, 2021, saying the technology would strengthen security across the application lifecycle, including build, deployment, and runtime. At the time, Red Hat said StackRox would continue supporting multiple Kubernetes platforms, including OpenShift, Amazon EKS, Microsoft AKS, and Google Kubernetes Engine. Those were statements made in the 2021 announcement, not confirmation of current support terms.
Red Hat confirmed that it completed the acquisition on February 22, 2021. The cited closing announcement did not disclose the purchase price. Red Hat’s closing notice confirms the completion date.

What became of StackRox’s technology
In May 2021, StackRox said its technology powered Red Hat Advanced Cluster Security for Kubernetes, describing the Red Hat product as the enterprise version of the StackRox project. On March 31, 2022, the StackRox community announced that the project’s source code was available as open source and distinguished it from Red Hat’s commercial product. The community transition announcement and the open-source release announcement describe that lineage.
For organizations evaluating Kubernetes security today, the practical question is no longer whether to buy from an independent StackRox startup. It is whether Red Hat Advanced Cluster Security, the open-source StackRox project, or another cloud-native security offering fits their environment. Compare supported Kubernetes distributions, SaaS versus self-managed deployment, lifecycle coverage, integrations, compliance reporting, data handling, operational overhead, support, and pricing basis. The open-source project and Red Hat’s supported commercial product are not interchangeable in support or service commitments.
