SSI Eligibility: Income and Asset Limits Explained for 2026

SSI has separate income and resource tests. Learn what SSA may count, common exclusions for a home and vehicle, and why gross pay alone does not determine eligibility.

There is no single gross monthly income figure that decides whether you qualify for Supplemental Security Income (SSI). SSA considers countable income after applicable exclusions, countable resources, and other requirements. The general countable-resource limits are $2,000 for an individual and $3,000 for a couple, but some property—often the home you live in and one vehicle used for transportation—may be excluded. The rules below reflect Social Security Administration guidance for 2026.

What determines SSI eligibility?

SSI is a needs-based federal program. To qualify, a person generally must be 65 or older, blind, or have a qualifying disability, and must also meet financial, citizenship or qualifying noncitizen-status, and U.S. residence requirements. Meeting an income or resource limit by itself does not establish eligibility.

Noncitizen eligibility depends on the person’s classification and other conditions; the broad phrase “qualifying noncitizen” is not enough to determine an individual case. SSA’s Understanding Supplemental Security Income SSI Eligibility Requirements — 2026 Edition explains the general requirements.

How much income can you have and still get SSI?

“Income limit” is shorthand: SSA does not apply one universal gross-income ceiling to every applicant. It classifies income, applies relevant exclusions, and considers what remains countable. Countable income can reduce an SSI payment, and income from different sources may be treated differently.

SSA’s SSI Income — 2026 Edition describes these main income categories:

Income category Examples What to know
Earned Wages and net earnings from self-employment Work incentives and exclusions may reduce the amount SSA counts.
Unearned Social Security benefits, pensions, unemployment benefits, interest, or cash from others Rules and exclusions differ from those for earnings.
In-kind Certain food or shelter received free or below fair market value Food is no longer included in SSI in-kind support and maintenance calculations effective September 30, 2024. Shelter may still matter.
Deemed Some income of a spouse, a parent, or a qualifying noncitizen’s sponsor In certain circumstances, SSA treats part of another person’s income as available to the applicant.

How the general earned-income exclusion works

Under SSA’s general calculation, the first $65 of earned income, plus any unused portion of the $20 general exclusion, is excluded; SSA then counts half of the remaining earned income. Other exclusions or special rules may also apply. For example, if a person has $1,000 in wages and no unearned income, the basic calculation—assuming the general exclusions apply and no other adjustments—would leave $457.50 in countable earned income: ($1,000 − $65 − $20) ÷ 2. This illustrates the calculation, not an eligibility decision or a guaranteed payment amount.

For eligible students under age 22, SSA’s SSI Work Incentives — 2026 Edition says up to $2,410 per month and $9,730 per calendar year in earnings may be excluded in 2026. Eligibility and the monthly and annual caps matter; earnings beyond an applicable exclusion may be treated under other SSI rules. SSA also describes exclusions such as certain impairment-related work expenses and disaster assistance.

Benefits are not income cutoffs

For 2026, the federal maximum payment standard is $994 per month for an eligible individual and $1,491 for an eligible couple. These are maximum federal benefit amounts, not income limits. The payment someone receives can be lower because of countable income or living arrangements, and a state supplement may affect the total. SSA’s SSI General Information — 2026 Edition gives the payment standards and discusses living arrangements.

SSA’s overview, “Who can get SSI,” also says a disabled applicant may need to establish earnings below $1,690 from work in the application month. Treat that as an overview screening statement, not as the universal SSI income ceiling: the separate income calculation depends on countable income and the person’s circumstances.

How much money can you have in the bank on SSI?

The general SSI limit is $2,000 in countable resources for an individual and $3,000 for a couple. These are ownership limits, separate from the monthly income rules. SSA defines resources as things a person owns that can be converted to cash and used for food or shelter; examples include cash, bank accounts, stocks, bonds, land, life insurance, vehicles, and other convertible property. Some resources of a spouse, parent, or sponsor may be deemed to an applicant.

Those limits do not mean every asset counts. SSA’s SSI Resources — 2026 Edition lists common exclusions, subject to its detailed rules:

  • The home and land where you live.
  • Household goods and personal effects.
  • One vehicle used for transportation by you or a household member.
  • Burial spaces and certain burial funds.

Other property or additional vehicles may not receive the same treatment. Do not assume that every house, car, bank account, or other asset is ignored; whether something is countable depends on the applicable rule and the facts. SSA’s own summary puts it this way: “We do not count all of the things you own as a resource.”

Does owning a car or house affect SSI?

A home and land where you live are among SSA’s general resource exceptions. One vehicle used for transportation by you or someone in your household is also commonly excluded. These exceptions can matter even when the property is valuable, but they are not a blanket rule for every property, vehicle, or ownership arrangement. SSA’s “Exceptions to SSI income and resource limits” page and its SSI Resources — 2026 Edition describe the exceptions.

When can someone else’s income or resources count?

A spouse or sponsor

In some circumstances, SSA deems part of a spouse’s income or resources to an applicant. Deeming may also apply to a qualifying noncitizen’s sponsor. The rules depend on the relationship and situation, so another person’s finances cannot be evaluated using the individual limits alone.

A parent and a child applying for SSI

When a child applies, SSA may deem some of a parent’s income or resources to the child in certain circumstances. The result depends on the child’s household and other facts. SSA’s Spotlight on Deeming Parental Income and Resources — 2026 Edition explains the conditions.

Can state rules change the result?

Some states provide SSI supplements or have higher income limits in particular circumstances. That can change the amount received or the eligibility context. It does not change the federal headline resource limits of $2,000 for an individual and $3,000 for a couple stated in SSA’s 2026 guidance. Because state rules vary, check the details for the state where you live rather than assuming the federal payment standard is the amount you will receive.

How to get an estimate for your situation

  1. List income by source. Separate wages and self-employment earnings from benefits, pensions, cash gifts, and any food or shelter support that may be relevant.
  2. List resources you own. Include cash, accounts, investments, property, and vehicles, then identify any potential exclusions such as a lived-in home or one transportation vehicle.
  3. Note household relationships. Record whether a spouse, parent, or sponsor’s finances may be relevant under deeming rules.
  4. Check nonfinancial requirements. Consider age, blindness or disability, status, and residence requirements as well as financial limits.
  5. Report income and ask SSA to apply the rules. Exclusions, work incentives, state rules, and living arrangements can change the result. SSA’s publications explain general rules, but only SSA can assess the facts of an individual claim.
