The SSC Stenographer Grade C and D application window for 2024 is closed. Applications were accepted from 26 July to 17 August 2024, and the fee deadline was 18 August 2024. The notice’s approximately 2,006 vacancies were tentative, not a guaranteed final count. SSC’s later 2026 application window also closed, on 15 May 2026; check the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) website for any future notice.

What the 2024 notice said about vacancies

SSC’s 2024 notice described recruitment to Stenographer Grade C (Group B, non-gazetted) and Grade D (Group C) posts in central government ministries, departments and organizations. It estimated approximately 2,006 vacancies and stated that the firm number would be determined later. SSC subsequently published a revised final-vacancy document dated 27 June 2025, with Grade C and Grade D figures broken down by department and category. The original estimate should therefore not be treated as the final count.

For the vacancy figures by department and category, refer to SSC’s revised final-vacancy document dated 27 June 2025.

2024 application dates, fee and correction window

The application was online. Applications opened on 26 July 2024 and closed on 17 August 2024. The ₹100 fee, payable online, was due by 18 August 2024. Women, SC, ST, PwBD and eligible ex-servicemen candidates were exempt from the fee. The correction window ran from 27 to 28 August 2024. These dates and terms applied to the 2024 cycle and are not open for new applications.

Eligibility under the 2024 notice

Education

Candidates needed to have passed 12th standard or an equivalent examination from a recognized board or university by 17 August 2024.

Age limits

Age was calculated as of 1 August 2024. The notice set different upper age limits for the two grades:

Post Age on 1 August 2024
Grade C 18 to 30 years
Grade D 18 to 27 years

The notice included category-based age relaxations, including five years for SC/ST candidates and three years for OBC candidates. The applicable relaxation and any supporting conditions depend on the candidate’s category; check the 2024 SSC Stenographer notice rather than relying on this summary to determine individual eligibility. The education cutoff and age limits above apply only to the 2024 cycle.

How selection worked

Selection involved a computer-based examination followed by a stenography skill test for shortlisted candidates. The examination had 200 objective questions for 200 marks and lasted two hours. Candidates eligible for a scribe under the notice’s specified conditions received an additional 40 minutes.

Computer-based exam section Questions Marks
General Intelligence and Reasoning 50 50
General Awareness 50 50
English Language and Comprehension 100 100

The question paper was in English and Hindi. Each incorrect answer carried a penalty of 0.25 marks.

Stenography skill test: Grade C and D differences

Shortlisted candidates had to take a 10-minute dictation in English or Hindi and transcribe it on a computer. Grade C required a faster dictation speed than Grade D, and transcription time depended on both grade and language.

Post Dictation speed English transcription time Hindi transcription time
Grade C 100 words per minute 40 minutes 55 minutes
Grade D 80 words per minute 50 minutes 65 minutes

The notice said that candidates taking the skill test in Hindi would need to learn English stenography after appointment, and candidates taking it in English would need to learn Hindi stenography, according to the user office’s requirements. The test language, speed and transcription period shown here are the requirements in the 2024 notice.

Can you still apply for SSC Stenographer?

No—not under the 2024 notice. That application period ended in August 2024. SSC’s 2026 Stenographer Grade C and D application period, which ran from 24 April to 15 May 2026, has also ended. To check whether a later cycle has been announced, consult the official SSC website and use the dates and eligibility in that cycle’s notice, not the historical 2024 requirements.
