The Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) advertised 914 Group C Head Constable vacancies in 2023, but the application window is closed. The official portal lists online registration from 20 May to 18 June 2023. The posts covered five trades, with different qualifications and age limits for each.
Is SSB Recruitment 2023 still open?
No. The SSB recruitment portal lists the application period as 20 May–18 June 2023 and marks the listing closed. The historical “apply now” wording does not mean the form is currently accepting applications. The notice required online applications through the SSB recruitment website; it did not accept applications by other modes.
What posts made up the 914 vacancies?
Advertisement No. 338/RC/SSB/Combined Advt./Head Constables (Non-GD)/2023, issued by Sashastra Seema Bal under India’s Ministry of Home Affairs, invited applications for temporary, likely-to-continue Group C, non-gazetted, combatised Head Constable posts.
| Post | Vacancies | Age range in the notice | Restriction or experience note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Head Constable (Electrician) | 15 | 18–25 | Trade test required |
| Head Constable (Mechanic) | 296 | 21–27 | Male candidates only; two years’ workshop experience desirable |
| Head Constable (Steward) | 2 | 18–25 | One year of similar-role experience required |
| Head Constable (Veterinary) | 23 | 18–25 | One year of animal-treatment experience desirable |
| Head Constable (Communication) | 578 | 18–25 | No additional experience condition specified in the summary of requirements |
The notice set aside 10% of vacancies for ex-servicemen; if eligible ex-servicemen were unavailable, those vacancies could be filled by non-ex-servicemen. SSB reserved the right to change or cancel vacancies, and an applicant could apply for only one of the five posts. Selected candidates could be posted anywhere in India or outside Indian territory.

What qualifications did each trade require?
The age limits below are those stated in the 2023 notice. The closing date, 18 June 2023, was the crucial date for calculating age and assessing eligibility. Category-based age relaxations and exact document requirements depend on the detailed circular and applicable rules.
Head Constable (Electrician)
Applicants needed matriculation and one of the trade-experience, certificate or ITI pathways listed in the advertisement. They also had to qualify a trade test. The notice allowed Indian citizens and subjects of Nepal and Bhutan to apply.
Head Constable (Mechanic)
This post was open to male candidates aged 21–27. The required background was matriculation plus an automobile or motor mechanical engineering diploma, or a relevant two-year certificate course, and a valid heavy-vehicle driving licence. Two years of workshop experience was desirable, not stated as a mandatory condition in the summary of requirements. Indian citizens and subjects of Nepal and Bhutan could apply.

Head Constable (Steward)
Applicants needed matriculation, a diploma or certificate in catering or kitchen management, and one year of experience in a similar role. This post was limited to Indian citizens.

What were the pay scale and application fee?
The 2023 notice placed all five posts at Pay Level 4, ₹25,500–₹81,100, with dearness allowance, ration money allowance, house-rent allowance and other admissible allowances. It stated that selected candidates would be covered by the Defined Contribution Pension Scheme (New Pension Scheme).
The non-refundable examination fee was ₹100 for UR, EWS and OBC candidates. The notice exempted SC, ST, ex-servicemen and female candidates. Payment was by net banking, credit card or debit card. These are the terms in the 2023 advertisement, not an indication that payment or applications can now be made.
How was selection described?
A contemporaneous Scroll report summarized the process as a Physical Efficiency Test (PET) and Physical Standard Test (PST), followed by a written exam for candidates who passed, and applicable skill or trade tests for candidates on the final merit list. The stages depended on the post. The available text of the SSB circular explicitly mentions a trade test for Electrician but does not set out the complete post-by-post selection scheme or test standards. For exact standards, the full detailed notification is the controlling reference.
