Tock is a hospitality technology platform for restaurant reservations, prepaid dining, ticketed events, wineries, and related operations. It is no longer owned by Squarespace.
The deal matters because American Express is using Tock to expand its restaurant technology and dining ecosystem alongside Resy. In February 2026, American Express said it planned to bring Tock venues under Resy during summer 2026. That announcement described a planned integration—not proof that every Tock customer had already migrated.

What Tock does
Tock is more than a restaurant booking calendar. Its tools support:
#1 Best Overall
- Large Touch Screen Display: Features a 17 inch touch screen display monitor for easy navigation and operation
- Complete POS System: Includes PC controller and POS software built in for seamless point of sale management
- Secure Cash Storage: Comes with a cash drawer for safe and organized cash handling during transactions
- Customer Receipt Printer: Equipped with a receipt printer to provide customers with printed transaction receipts
- Kitchen Order Printer: Includes a dedicated kitchen order printer for efficient order management and food preparation (long cord included)
- Standard restaurant reservations and waitlists
- Table and floor management
- Deposits, prepayments, credit-card holds, and cancellation policies
- Ticketed dinners, tastings, and other events
- Wineries, hotels, pop-ups, and other hospitality businesses
- Takeout and related guest-management operations
- Reservation and guest data tools
That product mix is particularly useful for businesses selling fixed-price experiences or trying to reduce losses from no-shows. Tock’s published plans have also emphasized event ticketing, prepayments, table management, integrations, analytics, and guest tools. Operators should check the current offering directly because product names, pricing, and migration arrangements can change.
Tock launched in Chicago in 2014 and was founded by Nick Kokonas, a co-founder of the Alinea Group. Squarespace said in 2021 that Tock served more than 7,000 hospitality operators in approximately 30 countries and had processed more than $1 billion in prepaid experiences. The roughly 7,000-customer figure was cited again around the 2024 transaction, but it should not be treated as a current 2026 customer count.
Timeline of the transaction
- March 31, 2021: Squarespace announced that it would acquire Tock for more than $400 million in a combination of cash and stock. Squarespace said the deal would strengthen its hospitality and commerce offering. Read the 2021 announcement.
- June 21, 2024: Squarespace announced an agreement to sell Tock to American Express for $400 million in cash, subject to customary adjustments and regulatory approval. Read the sale announcement.
- October 15, 2024: American Express announced that the acquisition had closed. Tock therefore became an American Express-owned business on that date. Read the closing announcement.
- October 17, 2024: Permira completed its separate acquisition of Squarespace. The timing provides portfolio context, but the available announcements do not establish that Permira caused or required the Tock sale. Read Squarespace’s announcement.
- February 24, 2026: American Express said Tock venues were planned to come under the Resy platform during summer 2026. It said more than 25,000 venues would be bookable through Resy after the planned integration, including Tock’s fine-dining restaurants and more than 1,200 wineries. Read the Resy announcement.
Why did Squarespace sell Tock?
Squarespace’s public explanation focused on strategic fit. American Express could give Tock access to a large dining network and premium diners, while Tock added hospitality software and merchant relationships to American Express’s dining business. The companies also said they would explore Amex Offers and card-member benefits for small businesses using American Express cards.
There is also a reasonable portfolio interpretation. Squarespace announced in May 2024 that it had agreed to be acquired by Permira in an approximately $6.9 billion all-cash transaction. Selling Tock before that transaction closed may indicate that hospitality software was no longer central to Squarespace’s standalone strategy. That is an inference from the timing, not a stated explanation from management.
Squarespace had bought Tock to deepen its commerce and hospitality capabilities. Three years later, American Express was better positioned to connect Tock’s restaurant tools with dining discovery, payments, offers, loyalty, and card-member relationships. The sale allowed Squarespace to focus on its core website and commerce business while transferring Tock to an owner with a more direct dining strategy.
Why did American Express buy Tock?
American Express already owned Resy, a consumer-facing restaurant reservation platform. Tock added a different but complementary capability: operational software for reservations, deposits, prepaid experiences, ticketing, and complex hospitality businesses.
American Express described the acquisition as a way to expand its restaurant and venue network, provide more digital tools to merchants, offer more dining experiences through its channels, and strengthen connections between restaurants and premium diners.

The strategic logic extends beyond reservations. Resy can help diners discover and book venues. Tock can help those venues manage reservations and paid experiences. American Express brings card-member relationships, offers, loyalty infrastructure, and payment data. Connecting those pieces could give the company more influence over both sides of the dining transaction.
That is a strategic rationale, not a guarantee of higher bookings for every Tock operator or a universal new benefit for every American Express cardholder.
What happened to Tock customers?
The 2024 sale announcement did not announce an immediate shutdown of Tock or a mandatory migration on the closing date. Ownership changed, but ownership transfer, day-to-day product operation, and later platform integration are separate events.
By February 2026, American Express had announced a plan to bring Tock venues under Resy during summer 2026. Unless a venue has received specific migration instructions or a later completion notice, operators should not assume that every Tock account, URL, contract, widget, integration, or guest record has already moved.

Operators should confirm directly:
- Which product and contract they are being offered
- Whether their current reservation pages and widgets will change
- How floor plans, guest histories, event listings, and future bookings will transfer
- Whether existing POS and payment integrations remain supported
- How guest data can be exported and used
- Whether pricing, prepayment fees, processing fees, and cancellation terms change
- What support and training are available during migration
Tock’s current published pricing page should be treated as a live commercial document, not a permanent statement of contract terms: Tock plans and pricing.
Does the $400 million price mean Squarespace broke even?
No. The headline comparison is directionally interesting but does not establish a profit, loss, or break-even result.
Squarespace announced in 2021 that it acquired Tock for more than $400 million in a mix of cash and stock. The 2024 sale was announced at $400 million in cash, subject to customary adjustments. Cash and stock are different forms of consideration, and the value of the earlier stock component would depend on the relevant valuation and timing.

The two transactions also occurred three years apart. During that period, Tock generated revenue, incurred expenses, and may have required additional investment. Accounting treatment, taxes, transaction costs, and the value of any retained or transferred assets also affect the economic result.
The accurate formulation is: Squarespace sold Tock for a headline amount roughly comparable to what it announced paying in 2021, but the figures are not directly comparable enough to prove that Squarespace made or lost money.

The acquisition does not automatically make Tock or Resy the best reservation system for every venue. The right choice depends on the restaurant’s operating model and total cost.
Tock-style functionality
Tock is most relevant to restaurants, wineries, tasting rooms, hotels, and hospitality businesses that need prepaid reservations, deposits, ticketed events, tasting experiences, or complex table management. Its trade-off is that operators should carefully evaluate the fee structure, payment processing, integrations, data policies, and future Resy migration path.
Resy
Resy may be a stronger fit for operators prioritizing reservation and table tools, consumer-facing discovery, POS integrations, and access to the American Express dining ecosystem. Resy’s published plans have included Platform at $249 per month and Platform 360 at $399 per month, but operators should verify current prices and inclusions before signing.
Toast and Toast Tables
Restaurants already using Toast POS may value a more connected workflow for reservations, waitlists, table management, and operational data. Toast’s Resy partner page has also described a six-month Resy promotion for eligible Toast restaurants, subject to terms and eligibility. That promotion should not be assumed to apply to every restaurant.
See Toast’s Resy integration information.
OpenTable and independent tools
OpenTable may appeal to restaurants that prioritize broad consumer discovery and marketplace reach. Its pricing and cover economics can vary by market, plan, and booking source, so operators should request a current market-specific quote.

A practical software-selection checklist
Before changing systems, a restaurant operator should compare total costs and operational risk rather than relying on the acquisition headline.

What diners should expect
The planned Tock-Resy integration could create a larger combined inventory of restaurants, wineries, and paid dining experiences. It may also make it easier for American Express to connect reservations with card-linked offers, membership benefits, and dining recommendations.
Those are possible platform effects, not universal promises. A specific restaurant may use a different system, restrict bookings to certain channels, or offer benefits only to eligible cardholders under particular program terms. Diners should check the venue’s booking page and the terms of any American Express offer rather than assuming that every Tock venue qualifies.
Bottom line
American Express completed its $400 million acquisition of Tock from Squarespace on October 15, 2024. Squarespace’s June announcement was the agreement to sell; it was not the closing. Tock brought American Express restaurant-operations software, prepaid experiences, event ticketing, and hospitality customers, while American Express brought Resy, dining distribution, card-member relationships, and payment-related capabilities.
The most important current question is not who owns Tock—the answer is American Express—but how fully and smoothly Tock’s products, venues, contracts, and data are integrated into Resy. Restaurant operators should verify their own migration and pricing terms before making a software decision.
