The change is not a single worldwide price update: check Spotify’s email and your account’s country-specific plan page for the amount and date that apply to you.
Who is affected by Spotify’s 2026 price change?
Spotify’s January 15, 2026 announcement named subscribers in the United States, Estonia and Latvia. The company said it would email affected subscribers over the following month with details. The announcement did not publish a global price table or specify every affected plan’s price.
If you live elsewhere—or want to confirm your particular plan—use the price and effective date in Spotify’s email or account page. Spotify says the billing date depends on the subscription date, so a new price may not begin for every subscriber on the same calendar day. What is the new U.S. Spotify Premium price?
TechCrunch reported that U.S. Premium Individual increases from $11.99 to $12.99 per month, with the new price applying from the subscriber’s next monthly billing cycle. That figure is for the U.S. Individual plan; it should not be applied to Duo, Family, Student, or plans in other countries. Spotify’s announcement directs customers to local plan details rather than supplying one price for every market. TechCrunch’s January 15 report provides the U.S. Individual amount.

How to check your price and billing date
- Open the Spotify email about the price update and check the market, plan, new amount and effective date stated there.
- Sign in to your Spotify account and review the subscription or plan details. Confirm the country and plan match the subscription you actually use.
- If the email and account page do not make the timing clear, consult Spotify’s Price updates help page or contact Spotify Support before the next billing date.
Use the notice tied to your account rather than assuming the U.S. Individual change applies to you. The January announcement named Estonia and Latvia as well, but the U.S. dollar amount does not establish prices in those markets.
What can you do before the new charge?
Spotify Support says affected subscribers receive an email and have a one-month grace period to cancel before the new price takes effect. Your account’s stated date is the practical deadline to check. Spotify lists these alternatives:

- Check eligibility for another paid plan. Spotify says some subscribers may be eligible for another plan; verify the available options in your account.
- Switch to Spotify Free. The free service is ad-supported.
- Cancel before your next billing date. Use the account’s subscription controls and confirm the cancellation status and date.

Can a Spotify gift card avoid the increase?
Spotify says a gift card bought at a lower price can still be redeemed, but only for Premium Individual. That is not a permanent lock on a monthly subscription price, and it does not guarantee savings: the card’s market, retailer availability, face value and terms matter. Why does Spotify say it is raising prices?
Spotify says occasional price updates reflect the value it delivers and help it continue improving the experience and benefiting artists. That is the company’s stated rationale, not independent proof that any particular cost caused this increase. The announcement does not establish that royalties, inflation or another specific expense drove the U.S. change.
Spotify introduced lossless audio for Premium in September 2025, specifying up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC; rollout to more than 50 markets was reported complete by October 6, 2025. How the increase fits Spotify’s price history
TechCrunch described the U.S. change as Spotify’s third U.S. Premium price increase in three years, following increases in 2023 and 2024. Spotify’s SEC-filed annual report also records U.S. Premium price increases in those years. This history puts the new charge in context, but it does not predict when or where Spotify will change prices next. Spotify Technology S.A.’s SEC-filed annual report.
The same annual report cites IFPI figures for the recorded-music industry, not Spotify’s own subscriber totals: global recorded-music streaming accounted for 69.6% of revenue and surpassed $22 billion in 2025, while global music-streaming subscribers grew approximately 11.3% to 837 million from 752 million in 2024. Those industry figures describe a broad market; they do not explain Spotify’s specific pricing decision or represent Spotify subscribers.

Should you switch to another music service?
A price increase alone does not establish which service is cheaper or better for you. Prices and plan rules differ by country and change over time. Before switching, compare current prices where you live, whether an individual or household plan fits your use, catalog availability, audio quality, offline listening, included podcasts or audiobooks, and trial and cancellation terms. Do not treat a competitor as cheaper without checking its current local offer against your Spotify notice.
