There is no guaranteed processing time for spousal sponsorship in Canada. IRCC’s dated figures show that timelines differed by application route and intended destination: as of September 30, 2025, estimates outside Quebec were about 12.9 months for overseas applications and 13 months for applications made in Canada. Quebec estimates were substantially longer. These are historical reference points, not a promise or a current forecast for an individual file. For an estimate for a new application, use IRCC’s live processing-time checker and select the applicable category and destination.
How long does spousal sponsorship take in Canada?
It depends on whether the application is processed as an overseas or in-Canada case and whether the sponsored person intends to live in Quebec. IRCC updates estimates as its application inventory, staffing and expected volume change, so figures from different reporting dates should not be treated as one universal timeline.
IRCC estimates reported in 2025
In its family reunification report, IRCC gave approximate estimates as of September 30, 2025. The figures below are months and distinguish route and destination.
| Intended destination | Overseas application | Application made in Canada |
|---|---|---|
| Outside Quebec | 12.9 months | About 13 months |
| Quebec | About 34 months | About 23 months |
These are IRCC’s approximate figures for the stated cutoff date, not guaranteed completion dates. See the IRCC 2025–2026 family reunification report.

Subsequent IRCC publications describe different periods and should be read with their dates and scope. As of January 31, 2026, IRCC listed approximate estimates outside Quebec of 12.6 months overseas and 14 months in Canada; for Quebec, it listed about 33 months overseas and 25 months in Canada. IRCC also reported that applications submitted in and outside Canada for people intending to live outside Quebec were processed in approximately 14 months from April 2025 to March 2026, and about 15 months from August 2025 to July 2026. These are retrospective summaries of past processing periods, not estimates for a new application or predictions for an already-filed case. IRCC application-processing system information
How IRCC calculates a processing-time estimate
IRCC describes its checker estimate as how long it expects to process an application if it receives it today. It uses factors including the inventory of applications, the number of people processing that type of case and the number of applications it expects to receive. The estimate includes biometrics. It is designed for a new application and is not a personalized countdown for a case already in the queue. IRCC processing-time checker
For a submitted application, processing time begins when IRCC receives a complete application and ends when IRCC makes a decision. Incomplete applications may be delayed or returned. Verification needs, the complexity of a case and how promptly applicants respond to IRCC requests can also affect the timeline.
If an applicant lives outside Canada and the United States and applies through a Canadian embassy, high commission or consulate, IRCC advises allowing an additional 3 to 4 months for mailing. This is a mailing allowance for that situation, not a general addition for every spousal sponsorship application. The same IRCC page mentions a separate 6-to-8-month allowance for a specific case involving a minor outside Canada and the United States whose application was sent directly to the Case Processing Centre in Sydney, Nova Scotia; it should not be applied to an ordinary spousal application.

Inland versus outland sponsorship: what the figures can tell you
“Inland” and “outland” are common shorthand for applications made in Canada and overseas, but the intended destination also matters. Compare only figures with the same reporting date, route and destination. The figures above do not establish that one route will always be faster, nor can a historical average determine when a particular application will be decided.
To get a useful estimate, open IRCC’s processing-time checker, choose the family sponsorship application category and the relevant location or destination, then read the result as an estimate for an application received today.

Why Quebec spousal sponsorship can take longer
Quebec-destined cases have a separate provincial undertaking step under the Canada–Quebec Accord. This is why Quebec estimates should not be compared as if they were the same process as applications destined for the rest of Canada.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIRCC instructs applicants in Quebec not to submit the undertaking to Quebec until IRCC tells them to do so. If IRCC has the permanent-residence application but the Quebec undertaking has not been obtained, IRCC says it cannot approve that application yet. Follow the steps in IRCC’s after-you-apply instructions rather than sending the undertaking early.

What to do while the application is processing
Track the case after acknowledgement of receipt
IRCC first reviews a received application for completeness. Once it is complete, IRCC sends the sponsor an acknowledgement of receipt (AOR); applicants can then check application status. Keep contact and case information current and watch for IRCC messages, document requests and decisions. Written consent may be needed to access information about a family member. See IRCC’s post-application guidance.
Consider temporary status separately
While the permanent-residence application is in process, a spouse, partner or dependent child outside Canada may apply for a visitor visa. Approval is not automatic. If the person is approved and arrives in Canada, they may be able to apply for an open work permit if they meet the applicable eligibility rules. These temporary options do not speed up permanent-residence processing or guarantee a particular outcome. IRCC’s after-apply guidance explains the relevant steps.
