On May 2, 2026, Spirit Aviation Holdings announced an immediate wind-down and said all Spirit flights were cancelled. The earlier plan to eliminate roughly 150 salaried jobs and leave five airports was announced in November 2025; it is now a historical step in the airline’s contraction, not a current route update.
What Spirit announced in November 2025
Spirit planned to eliminate about 150 salaried positions and discontinue service at five airports as part of a turnaround effort. The job cuts were separate from pilot actions Spirit had also reported: furloughs for 365 pilots and status downgrades for as many as 170 pilots in the first quarter of 2026. Those figures describe different groups and should not be added together as one category of job cuts.
At the time, Reuters reported that Spirit estimated it would lose $804 million in 2025 and that its transformation plan aimed to return the airline to profitability in 2027. Those were estimates and a target reported in November 2025, not realized results or a current forecast. Spirit’s CEO described the airport and network reductions as a way to “better align with our smaller fleet and focus on our strongest performing markets,” according to a staff memo quoted by The Points Guy.

The January dates were the schedule announced in November 2025. The five-airport plan covered nine routes and about 1% of scheduled seats, based on Cirium schedule data cited by The Points Guy. That report also said Spirit had cut service to 18 destinations since its August 2025 Chapter 11 filing. These figures describe the planned reduction at that time; the later shutdown ended all Spirit service, not only flights at these airports.

Why those cuts no longer describe Spirit’s service
On May 2, 2026, Spirit Aviation Holdings said it had “started an orderly wind-down of operations, effective immediately.” The company said all flights were cancelled and instructed passengers not to go to the airport. This was a company announcement filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
Spirit attributed the wind-down to a sudden, sustained rise in fuel prices, other business pressures, and a lack of additional funding. CEO Dave Davis said the company needed “hundreds of millions” of dollars in additional liquidity it did not have and could not procure. He also said a March 2026 bondholder restructuring agreement would have allowed Spirit to emerge as a going concern, but higher fuel prices left the company without an alternative to winding down. That describes a proposed path to emergence, not a completed return to operating as a going concern.

What affected passengers should know about ticket money
In its May 2 announcement, Spirit said tickets bought directly from the airline with a credit or debit card would be refunded automatically to the original payment method. Customers who booked through a travel agent were told to contact that agent. Spirit said compensation for tickets paid for with vouchers, credits, or Free Spirit points would be determined later through the bankruptcy process. These were the company’s stated terms in that announcement; the appropriate next step for an individual claim depends on the booking and payment method.
The U.S. Department of Transportation also recorded temporary assistance offers from other carriers for affected travelers, including capped or reduced fares, alongside support for former Spirit employees. Those offers had carrier-specific eligibility rules and limited validity periods; they have expired and should not be treated as available now.
