Spirit Airlines did not carry out the planned furlough of 365 pilots in early 2026. The airline announced the proposed cuts in October 2025, then scrapped that furlough plan in December. Spirit later ceased operations and canceled all flights on May 2, 2026, in an immediate wind-down that affected more than 2,000 Spirit pilots represented by ALPA.
What Spirit announced in October 2025
On October 16, 2025, Spirit said it planned to furlough 365 pilots and downgrade as many as 170 pilots in the first quarter of 2026. The airline described the staffing steps as a response to previously announced capacity reductions and a smaller operating fleet. Reuters reported the announcement and quoted Spirit saying it was aligning staffing with those changes: Reuters, syndicated by Investing.com.
Those numbers described a proposal, not completed job actions. The 365 figure was not accompanied by a sourced percentage of Spirit’s pilot workforce, so it should not be interpreted as a workforce share.
Did Spirit furlough the 365 pilots?
No. On December 5, 2025, Reuters reported that Spirit had scrapped the planned furlough of up to 365 pilots and scaled back its planned captain downgrades. The union said the assumptions behind the October plan had changed as pilot attrition exceeded expectations. The reported reversal is covered by Reuters, syndicated by MarketScreener.

That means the announced 365-pilot furlough should not be described as a group of pilots who were actually laid off under that plan. The later closure was a separate and much broader event.
What happened to Spirit pilots after the furlough plan was dropped?
Pilots approved temporary labor concessions
On December 11, 2025, the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) said Spirit pilots had ratified modifications to their collective bargaining agreement. The union reported that 82% of voting pilots approved the changes, with 78.95% of eligible pilots participating. The modifications included temporary reductions to pay rates and retirement contributions effective January 1, 2026. These vote figures and terms are reported in ALPA’s December 11 announcement.

Captain Ryan P. Muller, chairman of the Spirit Airlines Master Executive Council, said the vote represented pilots’ “direct investment in the airline’s future.” He also said the concessions gave the company what it needed from labor to secure financing and complete its restructuring. Those statements described the union’s rationale at the time; they did not guarantee Spirit would remain in business.
Spirit shut down in May 2026
On May 2, 2026, Spirit Aviation Holdings announced an immediate orderly wind-down and canceled all flights. In its SEC-filed announcement, the company cited higher oil prices and other business pressures and said additional funding was unavailable.

ALPA said the closure affected more than 2,000 pilots it represented, as well as thousands of other workers. ALPA president Captain Jason Ambrosi called the news a “devastating blow” to those employees. The union’s statement addresses the closure’s worker impact, not the individual employment outcome of every pilot: ALPA’s May 2 statement.
