When did Dave Davis become Spirit Airlines CEO?
Spirit Aviation Holdings, Spirit Airlines’ parent company, announced Davis’s appointment on April 17, 2025. The appointment took effect April 21, when he also became a company director. The dates matter: April 17 was the announcement, while April 21 was the effective date. Spirit’s SEC filing records the appointment.
Who is Dave Davis?
Davis came to Spirit from Sun Country Airlines, where his roles included president, chief financial officer, and board member. Spirit’s SEC filing specifies that he became Sun Country’s CFO and a director in April 2018, then president in December 2019.
His earlier career included senior roles at Global Eagle Entertainment and executive vice president and CFO at Northwest Airlines. He also held leadership roles at Xwing: the company’s 2026 annual report amendment says he was CEO from July 2023 to July 2024 and CFO from October 2021 to September 2023. Spirit’s 2025 filing lists a bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering and mechanics and an MBA, both from the University of Minnesota. These details describe his experience; they do not, by themselves, establish how he performed at Spirit.

What did Spirit say about the appointment?
At the time, Spirit chairman Robert Milton said Davis’s airline background at Northwest and Sun Country positioned him to lead Spirit’s “continued transformation.” That was Milton’s assessment when the appointment was announced, not independent evidence of the appointment’s results. The announcement is available in Spirit’s April 17, 2025 release.
Is Spirit Airlines still operating?
No. On May 2, 2026, Spirit announced an orderly wind-down, cancelled all flights, and advised customers not to go to the airport. The company’s statement said Spirit had played a role in the industry for “more than 30 years.” Its official restructuring site says customer service is no longer available. These later developments supersede the headline’s present-tense “hires” framing.

What the timeline does—and does not—show
The available company announcement and SEC filings establish Davis’s appointment date, prior roles, and subsequent status as Spirit’s president and CEO. Spirit’s wind-down notice establishes that the airline later stopped flying. These facts do not establish that Davis caused the wind-down or explain its causes; the cited notices do not provide a basis for assigning personal responsibility.
