Spirit AeroSystems began a second round of furloughs affecting an estimated 250 to 300 employees in Wichita, Kansas, during the week of June 10, 2025, according to The Wichita Eagle. The company said excess inventory was the reason; the furloughs were expected to last through the end of July, but the report did not confirm when individual employees returned.
How many employees were affected?
The June estimate was about 250 to 300 employees, attributed by The Wichita Eagle to Spirit spokesperson Joe Buccino. The same report put Spirit’s Wichita workforce at roughly 12,000, also citing Buccino; that is company-provided context, not an independently verified workforce count.
About 100 of the people in the June furlough group had already been furloughed in the preceding round, which began May 12. The figures are estimates reported by the newspaper, not counts from a government dataset or independent study.

The May and June estimates should not be added together as though they necessarily describe separate groups: the June report said about 100 workers in the later round had already been furloughed in May.

Why did Spirit furlough workers?
For the June round, Buccino told The Wichita Eagle, “The reason remains an excess of inventory on certain products.” That explanation points to a mismatch between available parts and near-term production needs, but the June report did not specify which inventory accounted for each employee’s furlough.
The May report provided a more specific explanation for that earlier round: surplus thrust-reverser parts associated with 737 fabrication programs. That detail belongs to the May report and should not be treated as a confirmed explanation for every June furlough.

What is confirmed about the furlough schedule?
The June article described the period through the end of July as the expected schedule. It did not verify the actual return date for each employee or report individual employment outcomes after that period. Likewise, the May duration was reported as an expectation of about 30 days, not a confirmed return schedule for every worker.

Spirit AeroSystems is the aerospace manufacturer in this report, not Spirit Airlines. In a later update dated December 8, 2025, Spirit’s Global Locations & Contacts page said Spirit AeroSystems, Inc. was wholly owned by The Boeing Company and identified the Wichita site as Boeing Wichita. That later ownership context does not change what was reported about the June 2025 furlough.
