What happened, and when did the furlough take effect?
Spirit’s 2024 Form 10-K reported approximately 170 pilot furloughs effective September 1, 2024, followed by approximately 330 more effective January 31, 2025. The filing discusses the workforce actions alongside grounded aircraft related to Pratt & Whitney GTF engine issues and aircraft delivery deferrals. Why was Spirit changing pilot staffing?
The annual report’s context points to fleet and flying needs: aircraft were grounded because of Pratt & Whitney GTF engine issues, and aircraft deliveries were deferred. Spirit later described other pilot staffing changes as alignment with projected flight volume. Those facts support an operational explanation for adjusting crew levels, but they do not establish that the company explicitly characterized the January 2025 furloughs as a cost-saving initiative.
How were the January 2025 cuts different from later actions?
In its 2025 Form 10-K, Spirit reported approximately 200 pilot furloughs during the predecessor period to align staffing with projected 2025 flight volume. The filing also recounts a separate July 2025 announcement: approximately 140 captain downgrades effective October 1, 2025, and approximately 270 pilot furloughs effective November 1, 2025, aimed at aligning staffing with projected 2026 flight volume. Did the later January 2026 furlough plan happen?
No. Aviation Week reported in December 2025 that Spirit canceled up to 365 pilot furloughs that had been scheduled for January 31, 2026. The report said planned captain downgrades were reduced from 170 to 25, following an ALPA staffing review and discussions with management; it also said Spirit confirmed the details. This canceled plan was separate from the 2025 furloughs. Aviation Week, December 2025

The contract concessions were a separate restructuring measure, not the explanation for the January 2025 furloughs. Spirit’s 2025 Form 10-K says pilot and flight attendant agreements in principle reached in November 2025 were ratified in December and approved by the bankruptcy court on December 29. It reports an 8% reduction in pilot hourly pay from January 1, 2026, and employer 401(k) contributions reduced from 16% to 8% for 2026 and 2027. Spirit Airlines, 2025 Form 10-K

ALPA said 82% of participating pilots voted for the modified agreement, with 78.95% of eligible pilots participating. The union said the deal preserved core work rules and included temporary pay and retirement contribution reductions with restoration provisions. Separately, Spirit said estimated annual savings from the agreements, if implemented, would meet the target for its next debtor-in-possession financing draw.
