SpaceX’s proposed purchase of low-band spectrum from Grain Management prompted a sharp reported market reaction: Axios said AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile lost about $36 billion in combined market value after the news. That figure is an attributed aggregate, not proof the announcement alone caused the decline or a verified closing-price move for each stock. The deal could strengthen SpaceX’s effort to expand Starlink from satellite messaging into a broader U.S. mobile offering, but the planned deployment still requires final FCC approval.
What SpaceX agreed to acquire
On October 8, 2026, SpaceX announced an agreement to acquire from Grain Management a nationwide portfolio of up to 14 MHz of paired spectrum in the 800 MHz band. SpaceX put the deal forward as a way to combine satellite connectivity with terrestrial mobile-network infrastructure. Axios reported a deal value of approximately $8 billion. The announcement describes an agreement, not a completed deployment: SpaceX said final FCC approval is still required. SpaceX announcement; Axios report.

Why the 800 MHz band matters
SpaceX says low-band spectrum can help signals reach through obstacles such as walls, addressing a limitation of satellite-to-phone connectivity and improving the prospect of service inside buildings. It also says its global 2 GHz mid-band spectrum would provide U.S. capacity. These are the company’s stated design goals; the announcement does not report independently measured coverage, capacity or indoor performance.

Why the carrier shares reportedly fell
Investors may have read the agreement as a sign that SpaceX intends to compete more directly with conventional mobile operators. Axios reported that AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile together shed about $36 billion in market capitalization on the news. Market capitalization is the total market value of a company’s outstanding shares; a change in that value is not the same as a specific percentage drop in each stock, nor does timing establish that one announcement caused the move.

The available reporting does not establish independently confirmed closing-price percentages for each carrier or show whether the reported move persisted through the close. For that reason, the aggregate Axios figure is more defensible than assigning precise declines to individual companies. A market reaction signals investor concern or reassessment, not proof that SpaceX will win customers or materially reduce carrier revenue.
Starlink messaging today is not the same as a mobile-carrier network
SpaceX’s existing Direct to Cell service should be distinguished from the broader Starlink Mobile network it proposes. The company’s service description says commercial satellite messaging was available in the United States with T-Mobile and in New Zealand with One NZ, using LTE phones and partner spectrum. It characterized data and voice as future development, rather than established features of that service. Starlink Direct to Cell service description.

| Service or plan | What is described | Status in the cited material |
|---|---|---|
| Direct to Cell | Satellite messaging through mobile-operator partnerships, using LTE phones and partner spectrum | Commercial messaging described for the U.S. with T-Mobile and New Zealand with One NZ; data and voice described as future development |
| Proposed Starlink Mobile network | A broader approach combining satellite connectivity with terrestrial deployment and the newly announced spectrum | Planned; SpaceX said final FCC approval remained necessary |
So, the spectrum agreement does not mean every phone can already use Starlink as a standalone carrier, or that Starlink Mobile has launched. The existing arrangement is a partner-based messaging service; the proposed network is a larger, not-yet-approved deployment concept.

How the carriers’ satellite strategy differs
AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon also announced a joint venture aimed at improving satellite coverage in underserved U.S. areas. Their announcement describes a shared platform intended to complement terrestrial mobile networks, and says existing carrier-satellite agreements remain in place. It is not the same plan as SpaceX’s proposed combination of satellite connectivity and its own terrestrial deployment. Carriers’ joint-venture announcement.

The strategies address overlapping connectivity gaps, but the announcements alone do not establish which will deliver broader coverage, stronger indoor service or better capacity. Those outcomes depend on regulatory approval, deployment, commercial terms and demonstrated network performance.
What the dispute says about the competitive outlook
SpaceX framed the spectrum as a way to address a key technical gap in building Starlink Mobile into a major U.S. carrier. AT&T Chairman and CEO John Stankey has challenged the economics and technical viability of SpaceX’s approach. In comments reported by Axios on September 29, 2026, he argued that building small cellular base stations alongside Starlink dishes could cost as much as constructing a conventional macro network. That is an incumbent executive’s assessment, not an independent cost finding. Axios report on Stankey’s comments.

Scale is relevant context but not evidence of mobile-carrier market share: Axios reported that, as of June 30, 2026, Starlink had 12 million subscribers, 10,200 satellites and service coverage in 167 countries, citing the company’s first public-company earnings report. Those figures describe Starlink’s broader operation, not the number of mobile subscribers or the competitive performance of Starlink Mobile.
What this means for customers and investors
For phone users
The agreement is not a notice that existing phones have acquired a new carrier or that indoor Starlink service is available. Current Direct to Cell messaging, as described by SpaceX, relies on participating operators and LTE phones; the broader network depends on approval and a future buildout. No launch date or measured service performance is established in the cited announcements.

For investors
The reported sell-off reflects a possible competitive threat being priced by the market, but it does not by itself forecast a lasting effect on carrier earnings or establish that SpaceX can quickly capture market share. The transaction’s regulatory status, actual deployment and demonstrated service capabilities are more meaningful milestones than a single news-day market-cap estimate. This is market context, not individualized investment advice.
Related spectrum transactions are separate
An EchoStar SEC filing describes earlier, separate SpaceX spectrum transactions, including future commercial arrangements for EchoStar wireless subscribers to access Starlink Direct to Cell text, voice and broadband services, as well as a fee-based referral program. Those terms and that transaction’s closing schedule are not part of the October 2026 Grain Management agreement and should not be treated as a public, generally available referral offer.
