SpaceX shares rebounded sharply after a steep post-IPO drop: Bloomberg reported a 48% rise in the three months after the stock’s August 5 low and a recovery of more than $750 billion in market value by October 9, 2026. That $750 billion is a change in the company’s market capitalization—not cash raised by SpaceX or the return earned by every shareholder. Bloomberg cited a mix of changing share supply, index reweighting, company news and investor expectations as possible supports, while also reporting fresh volatility and financing and share-unlock risks.
What the $750 billion figure means
Market capitalization is the market value of a company’s outstanding shares, based on the share price. Bloomberg’s figure describes market value restored as SpaceX shares rose from their August low; it does not mean the company received $750 billion in new money. Nor does it describe any one investor’s gain, which depends on when and at what price that investor bought or sold.

How the shares moved after the IPO
| Period or event | Bloomberg-reported share-price or market-value change |
|---|---|
| June 2026 market debut | Shares entered the market at $135. |
| First few days | Shares traded above $200. |
| Late July 2026 | Shares fell to $108; Bloomberg said the decline erased $1.2 trillion in market value. |
| Three months after the August 5 low, through the week of October 5–9 | Shares gained 48% and traded above $160; more than $750 billion in market value had been restored since August. |
The sequence matters: the October rise was a rebound from a sharp drawdown, not an uninterrupted climb after the IPO. The IPO, early trading, late-July low and recovery figures are all attributed to Bloomberg’s 2026 reporting.

Why Bloomberg said SpaceX shares rose
Bloomberg described several developments that may have supported the rally. Its reporting does not establish one definitive cause or quantify how much each factor contributed.
A larger tradeable float without the feared selling pace
As lock-ups expired, Bloomberg reported that the tradeable float grew from roughly 7.5% of outstanding shares at the IPO to about 33%. Investors had feared that newly eligible insiders might sell. The stock’s steadiness as the float expanded suggested selling was not occurring at the anticipated pace, but it does not show what every insider did or whether holders sold for other reasons.

Nasdaq 100 reweighting may have added demand
Bloomberg reported that the September rebalancing increased SpaceX’s Nasdaq 100 weight as its float grew. Funds that track the index would need to hold more shares to reflect the higher weight, potentially adding demand. The report did not quantify net purchases attributable to the rebalancing. Allspring Global Investments portfolio manager Bob Gruendyke summarized the interaction this way: “Supply comes on, but also index weights go up as the supply goes on.”

Bloomberg placed the beginning of the breakout in late September, around the first time Starship reached orbit. The report also said the stock continued rising on October 9 after SpaceX acquired spectrum that would allow it to offer “complete phone coverage in America.” The report did not establish the spectrum’s band, transaction terms or regulatory status, so the precise scope and status of that opportunity should not be assumed.

Long-term expectations remained part of the story
Some investors and analysts cited belief in SpaceX’s longer-term prospects, rather than a near-term earnings result, as part of the appeal. Bloomberg Intelligence analyst George Ferguson described the shares as a “long play” with an element of “Elon Musk-ness.” Those remarks are investor and analyst opinions, not measured explanations of the share-price move. Larry Tentarelli, founder of Blue Chip Daily, called SpaceX “just a leap of faith”; his characterization also reflects an opinion, not a factual valuation test.
The valuation comparison is not proof the shares are cheap
Bloomberg reported that SpaceX was trading at 111 times expected earnings for the next 12 months, compared with more than 540 times in July. Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas described the stock as cheaper on a growth-adjusted basis and retained a buy-equivalent rating. That is Jonas’s assessment: a lower forward earnings multiple than in July does not, by itself, establish that the shares are inexpensive.

Jonas argued that developments over the following months could help investors assess SpaceX’s role in addressing power and chip-making bottlenecks, with potential implications for earnings growth and valuation. This is a forward-looking analyst view, not evidence that those developments will produce a particular financial outcome.

What could make the rebound volatile again
Debt and financing plans
Bloomberg reported that SpaceX was looking to raise $40 billion in debt to buy Nvidia chips. That is a reported plan as of October 9, 2026, not a confirmed completed financing; the report did not supply transaction documents or terms. Bloomberg also said five-year credit default swap pricing on SpaceX debt reached a fresh high, a sign of increased market pricing for credit risk, though the report did not quantify what drove that move.

More shares could become tradeable
Bloomberg said an October lock-up expiration was expected to make another 7% of shares tradeable. The company was also scheduled to report its second quarterly earnings as a public company in November, alongside another major lock-up expiration. These were scheduled events and expectations in the October 9 report; dates and plans can change. Newly tradeable shares increase potential supply, but do not mean holders will sell.
The rally had already included a pullback
Even during the recovery, Bloomberg reported that shares fell 6.6% over the Wednesday and Thursday sessions covered by its October 9 report. That two-session decline is a reminder that the three-month gain did not move in a straight line.
How to read the competing signals
- Company milestones versus valuation: Starship and spectrum developments may shape expectations, but the reported price recovery does not establish how much future earnings they will generate.
- Index-linked demand versus unlocked supply: A higher Nasdaq 100 weight may support demand from index trackers, while lock-up expirations make more shares eligible to trade. Bloomberg did not quantify either effect on net buying or selling.
- Growth prospects versus financing and execution: The long-term case described by bullish investors sits alongside a reported large debt-raising plan and the challenge of turning company milestones into earnings.
- Share-price rebound versus earnings performance: The 48% rise and recovered market value are price and market-capitalization measures; they are not a reported measure of earnings growth.
For a reader asking why SpaceX stock rose, the most supportable answer is that Bloomberg connected the rebound to a combination of supply dynamics, index reweighting, company news and investor expectations. The reporting does not show that any one of them caused the rally, or that the rebound resolves the stock’s valuation and financing risks.
