SpaceX and Rocket Lab are not interchangeable launch companies: SpaceX combines launch operations with Starlink connectivity, while Rocket Lab reports Launch Services and Space Systems as separate segments. That difference shapes their revenue sources, profitability signals, and execution risks. The available 2025 figures show substantial revenue at both companies, but losses at the consolidated-company level; they do not establish which is the better investment or whether either is attractively valued.
What an investor is actually comparing
A comparison based only on rocket launches misses the central distinction. SpaceX’s business includes Starlink, a connectivity operation that is a major part of the company’s reported financial picture. Rocket Lab combines launch services with a larger reported Space Systems segment, which includes spacecraft, components, mission operations, optical systems, and related services. The businesses therefore offer different mixes of exposure to connectivity, manufacturing, contracted work, and launch execution.

That matters because revenue growth, backlog, operating income, and net loss answer different questions. Revenue indicates the amount of business recognized during a period; it does not show whether the company made money. Backlog represents contracted work still to be completed, not revenue already earned or guaranteed. A segment’s operating income is not the same as consolidated-company profit. Keeping these measures distinct is essential before considering valuation or investment risk.

How the business models differ
SpaceX: launch and connectivity under one company
SpaceX combines launch operations with Starlink satellite internet and related connectivity services. The Associated Press’s reporting on SpaceX’s 2025 filing put consolidated revenue at $18.67 billion and reported a $2.6 billion operating loss. The same report attributed $4.4 billion in operating income to Starlink. These figures are not contradictory: one is an operating-income figure for Starlink, while the other is an operating loss for the consolidated company, which includes other operations and costs.
The distinction affects how investors should interpret the business. Starlink’s reported operating income is evidence that the connectivity operation contributed meaningfully to results; it is not proof that SpaceX as a whole was profitable, generated a particular amount of free cash flow, or can fund all future investment without additional capital. The available reporting does not establish detailed segment margins, subscriber metrics, or forward guidance, so those should not be inferred from the figures above.
For an investor assessing the business, the key question is not simply whether launches occur. It is also how connectivity performance, service execution, and ongoing investment contribute to the overall company result. The available financial picture is consolidated, and the evidence here does not support a detailed breakdown of every business line.

Rocket Lab: launch services and a larger systems segment
Rocket Lab reports two segments: Launch Services and Space Systems. Electron is its small orbital launch vehicle. Space Systems covers spacecraft and component design and manufacture, mission operations, optical systems, and related services. The company is also developing Neutron, a medium-capacity launch vehicle.
Rocket Lab reported $601.8 million in 2025 revenue, up 38% year over year. Space Systems generated $402.8 million, while Launch Services generated $199.0 million. In other words, Space Systems accounted for the larger share of reported revenue in that year. Rocket Lab reported a $198.2 million net loss attributable to common stockholders for 2025, so the revenue growth did not mean the company was profitable.

At December 31, 2025, Rocket Lab reported $1.847 billion in backlog: $1.372 billion for Space Systems and $475.6 million for Launch Services. That balance signals contracted demand, but it is not a promise that the entire amount will become revenue on a particular schedule. The company says some launch and spacecraft contracts allow customers to terminate subject to notice and specified fees. Work must also be performed and accepted before it is recognized as revenue.
At-a-glance comparison
| Measure | SpaceX | Rocket Lab | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Business mix | Launch operations and Starlink connectivity | Launch Services and Space Systems | Shows which activities contribute to company performance; the businesses are not pure-play launch comparisons. |
| 2025 revenue | $18.67 billion in consolidated revenue, as reported by AP from SpaceX’s 2025 filing | $601.8 million, reported in Rocket Lab’s 2025 Form 10-K | Revenue describes scale, not profitability or investment value. |
| Profitability measure reported | $2.6 billion consolidated operating loss; Starlink separately reported with $4.4 billion operating income, as reported by AP from the filing | $198.2 million net loss attributable to common stockholders | Operating income or loss and net income or loss are different accounting measures and should not be compared as if identical. |
| Segment mix or visibility | Starlink is a major business; a comparable backlog figure is not established here. | Space Systems revenue of $402.8 million; Launch Services revenue of $199.0 million; year-end backlog of $1.847 billion | Segment revenue and backlog provide different kinds of information; backlog is not revenue already earned. |
| Highlighted execution issue | Execution in connectivity and launch, alongside companywide investment; detailed forward plans are not established here. | Neutron qualification, first-launch timing, manufacturing reliability, and production cadence | Investors should identify what must go right for each company’s growth expectations to be met. |
The scale difference is striking, but the revenue figures do not create a like-for-like comparison of two launch operators. SpaceX’s reported total includes a large connectivity business; Rocket Lab’s total comes from its two reported segments, with Space Systems larger than Launch Services in 2025. A reader interested specifically in launch exposure should therefore avoid treating total company revenue as a proxy for launch revenue. The figures supplied here do not isolate a comparable SpaceX launch-services amount.
Visibility also differs. Rocket Lab reports backlog by segment, giving readers a measure of contracted work awaiting fulfillment at year-end. The available comparison does not establish a comparable SpaceX backlog figure, so the absence of one here should not be read as evidence that SpaceX has no contracted work. It means only that this comparison cannot measure the two companies’ pipelines on the same basis.
Where the investment risks differ
SpaceX: consolidated losses, business mix, and disclosure limits
- Revenue scale does not settle the profitability question. SpaceX’s reported $18.67 billion in 2025 revenue came alongside a $2.6 billion consolidated operating loss. A large revenue base may reflect substantial activity, but it does not establish a sustainable margin, positive net income, or cash generation.
- Starlink’s contribution can be important without representing the whole company. The reported $4.4 billion in Starlink operating income is a segment figure. It cannot be used as a substitute for consolidated results or as a measure of companywide free cash flow. Investors need to understand the costs and investment elsewhere in the business before drawing conclusions about overall profitability.
- Results depend on more than launch execution. Because SpaceX combines launch with a major connectivity operation, company performance depends substantially on Starlink’s customer growth and service execution, as well as launch and other corporate activities. This is a business-mix observation, not a quantified forecast of future results.
- Granularity is a practical risk in analysis. The available reporting does not establish detailed segment margins, subscriber counts, or forward guidance. Without those details, investors cannot reliably calculate unit economics or project segment profitability from the cited figures alone.
For SpaceX, this creates a two-sided analytical issue. Starlink may make the company’s results less dependent on launch activity alone, but it also means an investor must evaluate a connectivity business alongside launch operations and other companywide costs. The reporting supports calling Starlink a major, cash-generating business and reporting its operating income, but not a detailed claim about customer economics, future growth rates, or how much of that income is available to support other activities. Those questions require more granular, current disclosure.
Rocket Lab: Neutron milestones, backlog conversion, and capital needs
- Neutron carries development and schedule risk. Rocket Lab disclosed an unexpected first-stage tank qualification failure in January 2026 that affected timing. Its 2025 Form 10-K targeted a first launch in Q4 2026. That is a company-stated target, not confirmation that the launch occurred or that the schedule remains unchanged.
- Development success is only one step toward a commercial business. Rocket Lab says it must manufacture vehicles reliably, achieve planned cadence, and secure commercial acceptance. Delays or production difficulties could affect revenue, financial condition, and results. A first launch alone would not demonstrate all of those capabilities.
- Losses and development spending put capital efficiency in focus. Rocket Lab reported a 2025 net loss despite higher revenue. The company also cautions that additional Neutron delays may require greater research and development spending and capital expenditure. The relevant investor question is whether the company can finance development and scale operations while improving its financial results.
- Backlog has to convert into completed, accepted work. The year-end backlog provides information about contracted demand, but contract terms, delivery timing, execution, and customer termination rights affect how much and when it becomes recognized revenue. Segment mix matters too: most of the reported backlog was in Space Systems, not Launch Services.
Neutron is not just a date on a schedule. The risk described by Rocket Lab extends from qualification into production and customer acceptance: the company needs to develop the vehicle, manufacture reliably, reach a planned cadence, and win commercial acceptance. These are separate steps. Even if a first launch meets the stated Q4 2026 target, that milestone alone would not resolve whether the vehicle can be produced repeatedly or whether planned commercial activity can be delivered at the pace needed.

The January 2026 tank qualification failure is particularly relevant because it is a disclosed development event that affected timing, not a generic possibility of delay. The Q4 2026 first-launch date appears in the company’s 2025 Form 10-K as a target; it should be reported as a forward-looking company target rather than a current, independently confirmed schedule. Investors following the program should check later company disclosures before relying on it.
How to read the numbers without mixing them up
Revenue is not earnings
Revenue measures sales recognized during the reporting period. It does not subtract the costs of running the business, financing, taxes, or other expenses. Rocket Lab’s 38% year-over-year revenue growth and SpaceX’s much larger reported revenue therefore show activity and scale, not whether either company delivered an attractive return to investors.
Growth is useful context, but it must be read beside the resulting financial performance. Rocket Lab’s 2025 revenue growth coincided with a $198.2 million net loss attributable to common stockholders. SpaceX’s 2025 consolidated revenue coincided with an operating loss. Neither pairing proves that results will worsen or improve; it shows why a growth rate or top-line total should not be treated as a standalone answer to whether a business is becoming profitable.
Operating income is not net income or free cash flow
Operating income or loss concerns operating results under the applicable accounting presentation. Net income or loss includes additional items below operating income. Free cash flow is a separate cash-flow measure. The available figures do not establish comparable free cash flow for either company. In particular, Starlink’s reported operating income should not be treated as SpaceX-wide net income or cash available after investment.
The profitability rows in the table are intentionally not presented as an apples-to-apples ranking. SpaceX’s reported consolidated figure is an operating loss, while Rocket Lab’s cited figure is a net loss attributable to common stockholders. The figures still communicate that the reported scale did not amount to consolidated profitability, but comparing their magnitudes directly would mix different accounting measures. A rigorous comparison would require matching measures and periods, as well as more information than is available here.

Backlog is not a guaranteed sales schedule
Backlog can help investors assess contracted work not yet fulfilled, but it does not necessarily specify when the work will be delivered, accepted, or recognized as revenue. Rocket Lab’s disclosed termination terms make the distinction concrete: customers can terminate certain contracts subject to notice and specified fees. Backlog should therefore be read alongside delivery progress, contract terms, and the company’s ability to perform.
Rocket Lab’s $1.847 billion year-end backlog is larger than its reported 2025 revenue, but that comparison should not be mistaken for a forecast of next year’s sales or a guarantee of the timing of conversion. The backlog includes different kinds of work, split between Space Systems and Launch Services, and contracts may have different delivery schedules and terms. No conversion schedule or comparable SpaceX backlog figure is established here, so neither a conversion rate nor a direct pipeline comparison should be invented.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical framework for comparing the investment cases
Before forming a view, separate the business questions from the security-price question. Company figures can help assess operating scale and execution risk. They cannot, by themselves, establish whether a share or other investment exposure is available to a particular reader, fairly priced, or suitable for a particular portfolio. Current share prices, valuation, dilution, and individual circumstances are not established by the figures in this comparison.
- Identify the exposure you want. Decide whether your thesis depends on connectivity services, launch services, spacecraft and components, or a combination. SpaceX’s reported mix and Rocket Lab’s segment structure offer materially different exposure.
- Check the right profitability measure. Compare consolidated results for the same reporting period, and keep operating results separate from net income and cash flow. Do not set Starlink’s operating income against Rocket Lab’s net loss as if they were equivalent company-level measures.
- Test the growth against execution. For Rocket Lab, track Neutron qualification, the company’s stated launch timing, production reliability, cadence, and commercial acceptance. For SpaceX, assess the execution of connectivity and launch operations using sufficiently detailed, current disclosures rather than extrapolating from a single reported segment figure.
- Examine the quality and timing of future work. For Rocket Lab, look at backlog composition, contract terms, delivery schedules, and conversion into recognized revenue. The available comparison does not provide a corresponding SpaceX backlog measure.
- Assess spending and funding needs. A business with significant development or scaling work may require substantial spending before expected returns arrive. Rocket Lab explicitly identifies the possibility of greater R&D and capital expenditure if Neutron is delayed; SpaceX’s consolidated operating loss makes companywide investment and cost structure relevant, though the cited figures do not quantify future funding needs.
- Only then assess valuation and fit. A strong business can still be a poor investment at an excessive price, and a risky company can be unsuitable for an investor who cannot tolerate losses. The 2025 operating figures alone cannot produce a price target or a personalized recommendation.
In practice, the checklist calls for different follow-up evidence for each company. For SpaceX, the central unresolved analytical questions are how Starlink and launch contribute to consolidated results, what ongoing investment is required, and whether current disclosures provide enough detail to assess their economics. For Rocket Lab, the questions include whether reported backlog converts on schedule, whether Space Systems and Launch Services develop as expected, and whether Neutron advances from qualification to reliable production and acceptance.

What this comparison can—and cannot—establish
The evidence supports a business and risk comparison, not a winner. SpaceX’s 2025 revenue was far larger in absolute terms, and its Starlink operation was a significant reported contributor, but SpaceX also reported a consolidated operating loss. Rocket Lab’s smaller business grew revenue by 38% in 2025 and reported substantial backlog, while remaining loss-making and pursuing a technically and commercially consequential Neutron program.
Those facts are useful for identifying what to investigate next: the durability and economics of connectivity revenue, the conversion of Rocket Lab’s backlog, Neutron’s progress from qualification through repeatable production, and the capital required to pursue each company’s plans. They do not establish which company will grow faster, achieve profitability first, or offer a better return at a particular price. That requires current valuation and financing information, comparable forward assumptions, and an investor-specific assessment of risk.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which company had higher revenue in 2025?
SpaceX had the larger reported total: $18.67 billion in consolidated 2025 revenue, as reported by AP from its 2025 filing. Rocket Lab reported $601.8 million. The comparison is not a pure launch-versus-launch measure because SpaceX includes Starlink connectivity and Rocket Lab reports Launch Services and Space Systems.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Was SpaceX profitable in 2025?
The reported figures do not show consolidated operating profitability: SpaceX had a $2.6 billion operating loss for 2025, according to AP’s report on its filing. Starlink separately reported $4.4 billion in operating income, but that segment figure is not companywide profit or free cash flow.
Is Rocket Lab profitable, and what did its backlog mean?
Rocket Lab reported a $198.2 million net loss attributable to common stockholders for 2025. Its $1.847 billion backlog at December 31, 2025, represents contracted work not yet fulfilled, rather than guaranteed revenue on a set schedule; some contracts allow customer termination subject to notice and specified fees.
What is the main Rocket Lab Neutron risk?
Rocket Lab disclosed an unexpected first-stage tank qualification failure in January 2026 that affected timing. Its 2025 Form 10-K targeted a first launch in Q4 2026, but that is a company-stated target. The company also needs reliable manufacturing, planned production cadence, and commercial acceptance; a first launch alone would not resolve those risks.
Which is the better investment, SpaceX or Rocket Lab?
These operating figures do not establish a winner. They do not provide current share prices, valuation, dilution analysis, or an investor-specific assessment of risk. Compare each company’s business mix, profitability measures, execution milestones, capital needs, and valuation before reaching a security-level conclusion.
The Bottom Line
SpaceX pairs launch operations with Starlink connectivity and reported much higher 2025 revenue, but also a consolidated operating loss. Rocket Lab reported 38% revenue growth and substantial backlog, but a net loss and significant Neutron execution and capital risks. These figures help frame what to investigate; they do not establish a better investment. Valuation, dilution, current disclosures, and personal risk tolerance still matter.
