Re:

Should You Change Your 401(k) Investments When the Stock Market Looks Overvalued?

A market valuation alone is not a 401(k) action plan. Check whether your allocation still fits your goals, then distinguish changed circumstances from portfolio drift.

Usually, no—not solely because stocks appear overvalued. A market valuation opinion is not, by itself, a reason to replace your 401(k) investment plan. First check whether your chosen allocation still fits your retirement timeline, risk tolerance, financial circumstances, and goals. If market performance has shifted your portfolio away from that allocation, rebalancing may be more appropriate than trying to predict what the market will do next.

This is general educational information for U.S. 401(k) participants, not a personalized investment recommendation. The cited guidance does not establish that the market is currently overvalued or identify a valuation level that should trigger a change.

Why a market valuation is not the same as a reason to change your plan

“Overvalued” is an assessment of what stocks may be worth relative to some measure of value. Even if you believe that assessment is correct, it does not tell you when prices might fall, how far they might fall, or which investment mix is right for your retirement. The official guidance cited here supplies no current valuation reading or threshold for changing a 401(k), and it does not establish that valuation forecasts can reliably time moves into or out of stocks.

The more useful question is whether your allocation—the proportions of your account invested in stocks, bonds, and other available investments—still suits your circumstances. SEC investor guidance identifies changes in time horizon, risk tolerance, financial situation, or investment goals as reasons to reconsider an allocation. That is different from changing the mix simply because one asset category has recently performed better or seems expensive.

The SEC explains the distinction this way: “But savvy investors typically do not change their asset allocation based on the relative performance of asset categories – for example, increasing the proportion of stocks in one’s portfolio when the stock market is hot. Instead, that’s when they ‘rebalance’ their portfolios.” SEC, Beginners’ Guide to Asset Allocation, Diversification, and Rebalancing.

Start by identifying what you own and what you intended

Before making a change, look at your plan’s current account allocation and compare it with the mix you originally chose. Review the plan’s latest account information and investment descriptions; the available funds and their costs depend on your specific 401(k) menu. If you do not remember your intended mix, determine whether the existing allocation still reflects your retirement goal and personal circumstances rather than treating a market headline as a substitute for a plan.

  • Time horizon: Consider when you expect to need the money and whether that timeline has changed.
  • Risk tolerance: Consider how much investment fluctuation you can tolerate without abandoning the plan.
  • Financial situation: A change in your circumstances may affect the allocation you can reasonably maintain.
  • Retirement goal: Reassess whether the mix still supports the goal you are investing toward.
  • Plan choices and costs: Evaluate the actual investments available to you and their relevant expenses, not just broad market commentary.

These factors help distinguish a genuine change in your plan from a portfolio that has merely drifted because investments performed differently. SEC guidance describes the former as a reason to reconsider an allocation; it treats relative performance as a reason to consider rebalancing toward a chosen mix instead.

It can help to make this review concrete. Write down the allocation you intended, the allocation shown in your account, and the reason you are considering a change. If the reason is that your retirement timeline, financial situation, risk tolerance, or goal has changed, you are reviewing the plan’s fit. If the reason is only that stocks have risen or appear expensive, you may be reacting to relative performance rather than reassessing your underlying plan.

When rebalancing may make more sense than moving to cash

Rebalancing means adjusting investments to restore a selected allocation after market movement has changed the portfolio’s proportions. For example, if stocks have grown to a larger share of your account than your chosen mix allows, rebalancing would bring the portfolio back toward that mix. It is not a forecast that stocks will fall, nor does it require replacing your investment plan with a market-timing decision.

Investor.gov describes two broad ways to decide when to rebalance:

  • Calendar-based: Review and rebalance on a regular interval.
  • Threshold-based: Rebalance when an investment category departs from its intended proportion by a preselected amount.

The guidance does not prescribe one universal interval or threshold. A six-month or twelve-month review can be an example of a calendar approach, not a mandated schedule. Investor.gov also says rebalancing tends to work best relatively infrequently; repeated changes in response to short-term market impressions are not the same as following a consistent rule. See the Investor.gov guidance on allocation and rebalancing.

So, should you move your 401(k) to bonds or cash because stocks look expensive? The cited guidance provides no valuation trigger for doing that, and a move based only on a market call would substitute a forecast for your allocation plan. Bonds or cash may be part of an allocation that fits your circumstances, but the relevant question is whether your intended mix should change—not whether a headline predicts a market decline. If your account has drifted, rebalancing toward the existing mix is a distinct choice from moving the whole account into a different category.

A consistent approach also makes the decision easier to revisit. A calendar review asks whether your allocation needs attention at a regular interval; a threshold rule asks whether the weights have moved far enough from their intended proportions. Either can be considered, but the cited guidance does not set a required schedule or threshold. Avoid treating an example interval as an official rule or creating a new trigger each time market commentary changes.

How to choose among the practical options

There is no single right choice for every 401(k). Compare the available approaches against your circumstances and the plan’s actual investments.

Approach What it does What to check
Maintain a diversified allocation Keeps an investment mix intended to suit your horizon, risk tolerance, financial situation, and goal. Whether the mix remains appropriate and whether the funds are diversified across asset classes rather than narrowly focused.
Rebalance toward your chosen allocation Adjusts weights that have drifted after market movement. Your existing rebalancing approach, the current weights, and whether a calendar or preselected-threshold rule applies.
Use an available target-date fund Can manage allocation changes and rebalancing according to the fund’s design. Target year, glide path, “to” or “through” retirement design, management after the target date, and fund and underlying-fund expenses.

Diversification spreads money among investments to reduce risk, but it does not eliminate investment risk. A fund is not necessarily diversified simply because it holds multiple investments: a fund focused narrowly on one sector may leave you concentrated in that area. Check what a fund actually owns and how it fits with the rest of your account. Investor.gov’s asset-allocation and diversification guidance explains these principles.

When comparing the options, the useful criteria are practical rather than predictive: Does the allocation match your time horizon and goal? Is the overall account diversified across asset classes, or concentrated in a narrow area? Will you be responsible for maintaining the mix, or does an investment do that automatically? What is the target-date fund’s glide path, and what are the total costs, including underlying funds where applicable? The answers depend on the plan’s menu and the particular investments available to you; a market valuation headline cannot answer them.

Costs matter as part of that comparison, but the cited guidance does not establish a universal fee level or identify one fund as best. Check current plan and fund materials for relevant expenses. In a target-date fund, include both the fund’s own expenses and costs of underlying funds when the materials provide them. Do not assume two investments with similar names, target years, or broad purposes have the same strategy or costs.

If you use a target-date fund, look under the label

A target-date fund may be a convenient way to have an investment shift its allocation and rebalance as its target year approaches. But target-date funds are not interchangeable or automatically right for every participant. Funds can differ in investment strategy, glide path, fees, and the way they manage allocations after the target date. The target year alone does not reveal all of those details.

Before adding other investments or moving out of a target-date fund because stocks seem expensive, check:

  • Target year: Does the fund’s stated retirement year align with your expected timeline?
  • Glide path: How does its stock-and-bond mix change as the target year approaches and passes?
  • “To” or “through” design: Does the fund reach its most conservative allocation at the target date, or continue changing afterward?
  • After-target-date management: What does the fund do with its allocation after the target year?
  • Total expenses: Review the fund’s costs, including the expenses of underlying funds where applicable.

For current details, rely on your plan’s materials and the fund’s own documents. The Department of Labor’s target-date fact sheet is dated February 2013, while the SEC’s target-date bulletin is dated March 25, 2025; fund designs and plan costs should be checked against current information. See the Department of Labor target-date retirement funds fact sheet and the SEC target-date funds investor bulletin.

Also consider how a target-date fund fits alongside the rest of your account. If you add other investments or change part of the account, review the combined allocation rather than looking at each holding in isolation. The fund’s automatic allocation management does not make it one-size-fits-all, and layering additional choices on top can change the overall mix you hold. Revisit the fund’s current materials before deciding whether any change is needed.

A practical sequence for deciding what to do

  1. Read your current allocation. Identify the approximate shares of your account in stocks, bonds, cash, and any other categories represented by your plan investments.
  2. Find your intended allocation. Use your existing investment plan or the allocation you selected when setting up your account. If you do not have a clear target, do not guess based only on a market valuation headline.
  3. Reassess personal fit. Ask whether your retirement time horizon, risk tolerance, financial situation, or goal has changed. If so, it may be reasonable to review the allocation itself.
  4. Separate changed circumstances from market drift. If your circumstances are stable and only the weights have shifted after relative performance, compare your account with your rebalancing approach.
  5. Check any target-date fund’s design. Review its target year, glide path, post-target-date approach, and total expenses before layering additional changes on top of it.
  6. Use the plan’s current investment information. Compare available funds, diversification, and relevant costs before selecting among the plan’s options.
  7. Apply a consistent decision rule. If rebalancing is appropriate, follow a calendar- or threshold-based approach rather than repeatedly changing investments whenever the market appears expensive.

When reviewing your plan materials, keep the task narrow: identify what the current holdings represent, compare the proportions with your intended mix, and note the relevant costs and fund design. The point is not to calculate a market top or find a perfect valuation signal. It is to decide whether your allocation still fits and, if it has drifted, whether your chosen rebalancing approach calls for an adjustment.

When an individual review may help

If you are unsure whether your allocation matches your circumstances, or your plan’s investment menu is difficult to assess, an individualized review may help. The relevant questions are specific to your timeline, risk tolerance, financial situation, goals, and the funds available in your plan. SEC investor guidance discusses these personal factors and points readers toward investment professionals; it does not endorse a particular provider or prescribe an allocation for you. Any professional’s advice should be considered in light of your circumstances and the services being offered.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is especially relevant if you cannot identify an intended allocation, have experienced a meaningful change in your circumstances or retirement goal, or are unsure how a target-date fund fits with other holdings in the account. An individual review can help address those plan-specific questions; it does not turn an uncertain market valuation into a reliable signal for when to move in or out of stocks. Review the current plan information and available fund lineup as part of that discussion.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I change my 401(k) investments because the stock market looks overvalued?

Usually, not solely for that reason. First ask whether your allocation still fits your time horizon, risk tolerance, financial situation, and retirement goal. If market movement has shifted your portfolio away from your chosen mix, consider whether your existing rebalancing approach applies.

Should I move my 401(k) to bonds or cash?

A market valuation opinion alone does not establish that you should move to bonds or cash. Those investments may be part of an allocation that fits your circumstances, but the cited guidance provides no valuation level or rule that calls for such a move.

Should I rebalance my 401(k) when stocks are expensive?

Rebalancing can be appropriate when portfolio weights have drifted from an allocation you chose. Investor.gov describes calendar-based and threshold-based approaches, but does not prescribe a universal schedule or threshold; rebalancing tends to work best relatively infrequently.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How often should I rebalance my 401(k)?

The cited guidance does not set one required interval. It describes regular calendar reviews and reviews triggered by a preselected percentage deviation as possible approaches, and says rebalancing tends to work best relatively infrequently.

Is a target-date fund automatically right for me?

No. Target-date funds differ in glide path, strategy, fees, and how they manage allocations after the target date. Check the target year, “to” or “through” design, post-target-date approach, and current fund and underlying-fund expenses against your circumstances and plan materials.

Does diversification eliminate investment risk?

No. Diversification spreads money among investments to reduce risk, but does not eliminate investment risk. A fund focused narrowly on one sector may also leave an investor concentrated, even if it holds multiple investments.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Don’t change your 401(k) solely because stocks appear overvalued. Check whether your allocation still fits your circumstances, distinguish a changed plan from market-driven portfolio drift, and use a consistent rebalancing approach if one applies. Compare the actual plan options—including diversification and costs—and inspect a target-date fund’s design before adding changes. The cited guidance offers no valuation threshold or personalized allocation recommendation.
