There is no single publicly traded company that matches SpaceX across its launch, satellite, and communications businesses. Public-market alternatives offer exposure to different parts of the space economy: Rocket Lab combines launch and space systems, AST SpaceMobile is developing direct-to-cellular service, Planet Labs sells Earth-observation data, Intuitive Machines works on lunar and space infrastructure, and Virgin Galactic focuses on human spaceflight. Those business models—and their execution stages—matter more than treating them as interchangeable SpaceX substitutes.
How to compare public space companies with SpaceX
Start with what a company sells, how established the activity is, and who pays for it. A launch provider, an Earth-imaging data business, and a planned satellite-to-phone network have very different routes to revenue and different operating risks. A contract or announced partnership is not, by itself, proof of revenue, profitability, or successful service delivery.

- Business model: identify whether the company sells launch capacity, spacecraft and components, connectivity, imagery and data, mission services, or human spaceflight.
- Execution stage: distinguish completed missions and operating services from announced agreements and future plans. Keep issuer-reported milestones tied to their dates.
- Customer and funding exposure: consider commercial customers, government contracts, telecom agreements, subscriptions, and mission contracts separately. Customer concentration and government funding can shape results.
- Capital and execution risk: review the latest SEC filing for financing needs, cash runway, debt, potential dilution, customer concentration, and milestones. Annual filings are not live operating updates.
This is a business-model comparison, not a ranking, valuation analysis, or personal investment recommendation. Share prices and valuations are not compared here because the available figures are not standardized to one date or metric.
Publicly traded space companies to know
| Company | Public ticker | Space exposure | What the cited evidence establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rocket Lab | RKLB | Launch services, satellite manufacture, spacecraft components, and on-orbit management | Rocket Lab reported 75 successful Electron missions and more than 200 spacecraft delivered through December 31, 2025; it later reported its 97th Electron mission on September 25, 2026. These are separately dated company milestones. |
| AST SpaceMobile | ASTS | Planned direct-to-cellular satellite connectivity | Its 2025 Form 10-K describes a Verizon commercial agreement announced October 8, 2025, with service planned to begin in 2026. The filing does not establish that service launched or met commercial targets. |
| Planet Labs | PL | Earth-observation imagery and data | Planet says its data supports business and government decisions and describes a fleet of approximately 200 imaging satellites that images the Earth’s land mass daily. |
| Intuitive Machines | LUNR | Spacecraft, networks, lunar delivery, and infrastructure services | Its 2025 Form 10-K describes work spanning low Earth orbit, geostationary orbit, cislunar space, and deep space, and flags significant dependence on U.S. government contracts. |
| Virgin Galactic | SPCE | Human spaceflight | Its 2025 SEC filing establishes it as a public reporting company listed on the NYSE. The sources cited here do not establish a current operating timetable or financial outlook. |
What each company’s business model means
Rocket Lab (RKLB): launch plus space systems
Rocket Lab spans launch services and the hardware and services around spacecraft. The company describes its offer as launch, satellite manufacture, spacecraft components, and on-orbit management. Its 2025 Form 10-K reports 75 successful Electron missions and delivery of over 200 spacecraft through December 31, 2025 (Rocket Lab 2025 Form 10-K). A later investor-relations update reported the 97th Electron mission on September 25, 2026 (Rocket Lab investor-relations update). The different dates matter: they are historical operating milestones, not forecasts or guarantees of future performance.

AST SpaceMobile (ASTS): a planned satellite-to-phone network
AST SpaceMobile’s focus is direct-to-cellular connectivity rather than conventional launch services. Its 2025 Form 10-K describes a commercial agreement with Verizon announced October 8, 2025, and a planned service start in 2026 (AST SpaceMobile 2025 Form 10-K). The wording is important: an announced agreement and planned start do not demonstrate that commercial service has launched, achieved coverage targets, or generated expected revenue.
Planet Labs (PL): imagery and data products
Planet Labs sells Earth-observation imagery and data for uses including agriculture, forestry, mapping, and government applications. Its investor overview describes a fleet of approximately 200 Earth-imaging satellites and daily imaging of the Earth’s land mass (Planet Labs investor overview). These are company-reported descriptions; investors assessing the business should distinguish the satellite fleet and image collection from the commercial demand, pricing, and recurring revenue derived from data products.

Intuitive Machines (LUNR): lunar work and broader space infrastructure
Intuitive Machines describes spacecraft and network infrastructure spanning low Earth orbit, geostationary orbit, cislunar space, and deep space, alongside lunar cargo-delivery work. Its investor page frames the model as “Build-Connect-Operate” (Intuitive Machines 2025 Form 10-K; Intuitive Machines investor overview). The 2025 Form 10-K flags significant reliance on U.S. government contracts, which can be partially funded, terminable, regulated, and audited. That makes contract funding and program execution central considerations, not incidental details.

Virgin Galactic belongs in a comparison of listed space-related businesses because it is a public reporting company listed on the NYSE, but human spaceflight is not a direct operating match for launch-to-orbit providers, satellite communications firms, or Earth-imaging companies. Its 2025 SEC filing establishes its reporting and listing status (Virgin Galactic 2025 SEC filing); the evidence cited here does not establish a current operating timetable or financial outlook, so no near-term service claim follows from this comparison.

How to use the comparison before investing
- Choose the exposure you mean. Decide whether you are evaluating launch and spacecraft systems, connectivity, Earth-observation data, lunar infrastructure, or human spaceflight. A broad “space” label can conceal very different businesses.
- Separate delivered results from plans. Check the date and wording of each company milestone. For example, completed Electron missions are historical results, while AST SpaceMobile’s cited 2025 filing described a planned 2026 service start.
- Read current filings for financing and customer risks. Use the latest SEC reports to review capital needs, cash, debt, dilution risks, customer concentration, government-contract conditions, and material milestones. A 2025 annual filing may not capture subsequent changes.
- Verify market facts close to the decision date. Confirm current listing, ticker, share price, and valuation using a consistent as-of date and comparable metric. The dated operating and investor materials cited here are not a current price or valuation screen.
Voyager Technologies is another public company in the space solutions and mission-services arena; its SEC filing names Rocket Lab and Redwire among component competitors. The available material does not provide enough comparable operating detail to profile it alongside the five companies above (Voyager Technologies SEC filing).
