May 2025 soybean futures settled at $10.11½ per bushel on Thursday, April 3, 2025, down 18 cents. Same-day coverage linked the decline to tariff concerns and broader market reaction after the U.S. tariff announcement, while also citing weakness in energy markets. Those are contemporaneous explanations, not proof that any one factor alone caused the move.

Where May soybeans finished

May soybean futures closed at $10.11½ per bushel, 18 cents below the previous session, according to Successful Farming and Brownfield Ag News on April 3. This figure is the settlement for the May contract, not a cash price for soybeans in a particular location.

Successful Farming’s morning update had May futures at $10.10¼, down 19¼ cents, shortly after 9 a.m. Central Time. The later close was $10.11½, down 18 cents, showing that the contract recovered slightly from that morning quote while remaining sharply lower for the day.

Why soybean futures fell

Market coverage identified tariff uncertainty and the global market reaction to the U.S. tariff announcement as the dominant themes of the session. Karl Setzer, a partner at Consus Ag Consulting, told Successful Farming, “The majority of today’s trade focused on little other than the U.S.’s tariffs and global market reaction.” That describes how market participants interpreted the day; it does not establish a precise causal share for tariffs in the price decline.

40 Soy Bean Midori Giant Edamame Heirloom Vegetable Seeds, Glycine Max
  • High Yield Bush Growth: midori giant edamame seeds form 24-36 inch nitrogen-fixing bushes, rewarding vegetable garden growers in USDA 3-9 with crunchy pods rich in complete protein.
  • Fast Germination: soybean seeds for planting sprout in 5-10 days at 70-90 °F, letting home garden beginners harvest tender edamame in just 80 days while heirloom seeds thrive in loamy soil.
  • Nutrient-Rich Snack: soy beans deliver sweet nutty flavor and buttery texture; boil or freeze for soy-protein snacks, soy bean seeds to plant are ideal for survival gardening fans seeking clean non gmo edamame.
  • Easy Direct Sow: edamame seeds for planting outdoors need 1" depth and 12" spacing, no trellis required; bush habit suits containers or raised beds, making veggie seeds ideal for small spaces.
  • Disease-Smart Cultivation: edamame seeds to plant resist common pests when grown in full sun and evenly moist soil; gardening kit growers mulch to conserve water and pick bright green pods before they yellow.

Setzer also pointed to losses in energy markets as a pressure on soy oil and the broader soybean complex. He said, “Soybeans were deep in the red much of the day, even though meal managed to climb its way higher. Sharp losses in the energy complex weighed on soy oil and the entire complex.” A separate morning comment from StoneX analyst Matt Zeller captured the market’s response to the prior day’s tariff news: “The marketplace did not leave much doubt about what it thought of ‘Liberation Day’ yesterday.”

How meal and oil compared

May soybean meal was reported higher even as the soybean contract fell. Coverage of soybean oil, however, was inconsistent: Brownfield listed May soybean oil up 144 points, while Barchart described soybean oil as down by 109 to 144 points. Because the same-day accounts disagree on the direction, a definitive oil move is not established here.

Export sales in the background

Barchart reported that USDA Foreign Agricultural Service data for the week ending March 27, 2025, showed 410,172 metric tons of old-crop soybean sales, including 285,900 metric tons attributed to China. New-crop sales were 3,274 metric tons. These figures are reported by Barchart as USDA data; the underlying USDA release is not directly cited here. They provide context on export commitments but do not by themselves explain the April 3 futures move.
