But the outlook is not a one-way bet on lower prices: forecasts also point to stronger soybean crushing and demand for meal and oil, while global ending stocks are projected to edge down. The acreage figures are forecasts, not confirmed planting or harvest results, and the available outlooks do not quantify a price effect.
What the 2026/27 acreage forecasts say
The figures below come from two agencies with different publication dates and measures. Conab’s September estimate is for cultivated area in Brazil; USDA’s May outlook reports harvested area for Brazil and Argentina. Their Brazil numbers are not directly interchangeable, and USDA’s May figures should not be read as a revision of Conab’s later estimate.
| Source and date | Geography and measure | 2026/27 forecast |
|---|---|---|
| Conab, September 15, 2026 | Brazil cultivated area and production | 49.3 million hectares of cultivated area, up 1.4% from the prior crop year; production of 181.64 million tonnes. Conab describes the area increase as the smallest percentage expansion in 20 years. |
| USDA Economic Research Service, May 14, 2026 | South American production | 254.3 million metric tons, up 3% from the prior marketing year, based on higher harvested acreage and trend yield. |
| USDA Economic Research Service, May 14, 2026 | Brazil harvested area, yield, production, exports and crush | 50 million hectares of harvested area, up 3%; yield of 3.72 metric tons per hectare; production of 186.0 million metric tons; exports of 117.5 million tons; crush of 65.0 million metric tons, up 6%. |
| USDA Economic Research Service, May 14, 2026 | Argentina harvested area and production | Harvested area up 5%; production of 50 million metric tons, assuming trend yield. |
Conab’s Brazil estimate is newer, but it uses cultivated area and puts production below USDA’s May projection. Differences in agency, timing, area definition and estimate level matter; the figures alone do not establish that either forecast is a correction of the other.
How added acreage can affect soybean prices
More planted or harvested land expands the potential crop, but acreage is only one input. Actual production also depends on yield. Conab expects Brazil’s average productivity to be slightly lower than in 2025/26, citing the high comparison base and climate risks. That is a forecast, not a report of realized yields or a specific weather outcome.
#1 Best Overall
- High Yield Bush Growth: midori giant edamame seeds form 24-36 inch nitrogen-fixing bushes, rewarding vegetable garden growers in USDA 3-9 with crunchy pods rich in complete protein.
- Fast Germination: soybean seeds for planting sprout in 5-10 days at 70-90 °F, letting home garden beginners harvest tender edamame in just 80 days while heirloom seeds thrive in loamy soil.
- Nutrient-Rich Snack: soy beans deliver sweet nutty flavor and buttery texture; boil or freeze for soy-protein snacks, soy bean seeds to plant are ideal for survival gardening fans seeking clean non gmo edamame.
- Easy Direct Sow: edamame seeds for planting outdoors need 1" depth and 12" spacing, no trellis required; bush habit suits containers or raised beds, making veggie seeds ideal for small spaces.
- Disease-Smart Cultivation: edamame seeds to plant resist common pests when grown in full sun and evenly moist soil; gardening kit growers mulch to conserve water and pick bright green pods before they yellow.
If acreage gains are realized and yields hold near trend or better, South America could have more soybeans available for domestic processing and export. If demand and inventories do not absorb that supply, the larger availability can create downward pressure on prices. The cited outlooks do not estimate how many cents per bushel, or what percentage, South American acreage growth might subtract from any price benchmark.
Why a bigger crop does not automatically mean a glut
Supply has to be assessed against use, trade and stocks. USDA’s May 2026 outlook projects Brazilian crush rising 6% to 65.0 million metric tons alongside exports of 117.5 million tons. Processing uses soybeans to produce meal and oil, so a larger crop can serve both domestic crushing and export markets rather than flowing entirely into export supply.

The same outlook identifies growth in meat and aquaculture production, which supports demand for soybean meal, and biofuel-related industrial use as supports for demand for meal and oil. USDA also forecasts global soybean ending stocks to decline marginally in MY 2026/27. That stock forecast complicates a simple oversupply story, although it remains a projection and does not rule out price pressure in particular markets or periods.

USDA ERS’s market page, updated September 18, 2026, gives a $12.00-per-bushel season-average price forecast for U.S. soybeans in marketing year 2026/27. This is a U.S. farm-price forecast, not a South American cash-price estimate or a forecast for global benchmark futures. It also does not isolate the effect of South American acreage growth.

For an updated global supply-and-use check, the USDA’s monthly World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) is the relevant publication. The official publication index lists September 11, 2026 as the latest release as of the information cited here; WASDE covers annual U.S. and world oilseed supply and use. The exact figures in a given release should be checked directly rather than inferred from the release index.
For a personal-finance reader tracking food, fuel or investments, keep the price benchmark clear: U.S. farm prices, South American cash prices and futures are different measures. The forecasts here support a conditional supply-pressure scenario, not a specific price target or a prediction that every soybean-linked cost will fall.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- HEIRLOOM VARIETY & HIGH YIELD: Outsidepride soy bean seeds is a robust heirloom strain known for its high yield, producing over 3 bushels per acre more than the popular Manokin variety, making it a valuable choice for maximizing harvest output. This variety is perfect for outdoor gardening enthusiasts looking to optimize their yard space.
- RICH IN PROTEIN & OIL WITH VERSATILE USES: Containing about 18% oil and 38% protein, this soybean variety is perfect for producing high-quality soy bean oil and protein-rich meal. These soybeans can be processed into a wide range of products, including soy milk powder, soy flour, soy protein, tofu, and various industrial non-food products, showcasing its versatility. Ideal for making various soy-based meals such as edamame snacks.
- OPTIMAL PLANTING GUIDELINES FOR MAXIMUM YIELD: For best results, plant soybean seeds at a depth of 0.75 to 1.5 inches, with row spacing between 7.5 and 15 inches, depending on soil type and tillage. This ensures uniform seed placement and optimal growth, adapting well to midwestern states and capturing a significant percentage of non-GMO acres.
- HIGH-PROTEIN ANIMAL FEED: The high-protein fiber left after oil extraction is ideal for animal feed, particularly for poultry and swine industries, which consume over half of the processed soybean meal. This meal is also crucial for cattle, other farm animals, and pets, ensuring they receive the necessary nutrients for growth and development. A great addition to feed mixes for cowpeas and other legumes.
- ECONOMIC AND NUTRITIONAL: As the most economically important bean globally, soybeans provide essential vegetable protein for millions and are key ingredients in hundreds of chemical products. A 60-pound bushel of our soybeans seed yields about 11 pounds of crude soybean oil and 47 pounds of soybean meal. Beneficial for producing shelf-stable goods for long-term use.
