Is PlayStation shutting down Bluepoint Games?
Yes. Sony confirmed that it planned to close the Austin-based studio in March 2026. Game Developer reported Sony’s confirmation on February 19, 2026, and Gematsu reproduced an employee email from Hermen Hulst, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Studio Business Group, saying, “As a result, we will be closing Bluepoint Games in March.”
That is a planned closure date, not confirmation of the precise final day of operations. The cited reports do not establish when the studio actually ceased operating.
Why is Sony closing Bluepoint Games?
Sony described the closure as the outcome of a business review. In the employee email reproduced by Gematsu, Hulst cited “Rising development costs, slowed industry growth, changing player behavior, and broader economic headwinds” as factors making it harder to build games sustainably.

Those are Sony’s stated reasons, not independently audited findings. The cited reporting does not establish that one canceled game, Sony’s live-service strategy, or any other single event caused the closure.
What did Bluepoint Games make?
Bluepoint was established in 2006 and became known for remakes and remasters, alongside co-development work. Sony said its relationship with the studio spanned more than 15 years when it announced the acquisition in 2021.

Sony described Bluepoint as a 70-person team when it announced the acquisition in 2021. The studio joined PlayStation Studios as its 16th studio that year. Neither figure should be confused with the separate estimate of employees affected by the 2026 closure.
What happens to Bluepoint employees?
Game Developer reported that about 70 employees faced layoffs as part of the closure. “About” matters: this is a reported estimate, not a verified final count of job losses. Hulst said Sony would try, where possible, to find opportunities for some affected employees elsewhere in its studio network. The cited sources do not give a final number of layoffs or transfers.

How the closure fits Bluepoint’s PlayStation history
Bluepoint’s PlayStation relationship began long before Sony acquired the studio. At the time of the 2021 acquisition announcement, Sony said the relationship had lasted more than 15 years. The acquisition made Bluepoint part of PlayStation Studios, which Sony described as its 16th studio.
The studio’s public work included both rebuilding existing games and contributing to larger productions. That distinction helps explain why its credits span standalone remakes such as Demon’s Souls and co-development work such as God of War Ragnarök; it does not, by itself, explain Sony’s decision to close the studio.
